FORWARD PLANNING IS ESSENTIAL You must carefully plan for your Year 13 courses and from there to universities, tertiary providers, courses and jobs you may want once you leave school. SELECTING YOUR SUBJECT CHOICES Year 13 students have 5 classes plus 1 class of supervised study. Your course selection will be made in school in Week 5, Term 3. Faculty Leaders will talk with you about your subject choices before entry is made. Please ensure you have read the information in this booklet and possibly the Year 12 course booklet, about subjects you are interested in taking. Discuss your choices with your parents / caregivers. We will try to fulfil the wishes of students and their parents / caregivers in selecting courses, but the school reserves the right to limit or modify classes according to: - the ability and needs of the student - available staffing, resources and timetable restrictions.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL LEARNING NEEDS Supported students will have programmes tailored to their specific needs. Deans and staff involved with these students will help plan their individual programmes. Please make contact with the appropriate staff if you would like to discuss your ideas.

COURSE CONFIRMATION Your course will be confirmed at re-enrolment Tuesday 21st January 2020, between 10am and 2pm in the Library.

Your acceptance into a subject for 2020 will depend on your 2019 NCEA results.

NZQA QUALIFICATIONS AND AWARDS We offer a range of NZQA qualifications: NCEA Certificates at Levels 1, 2 and 3, and University Entrance, as well as a number of National Certificates in specific subject areas: Cookery, Coffee Appreciation, Building, Primary Industries, Travel and Tourism. Many of our subjects (especially at Year 12) offer credits towards the Vocational Pathways Certificates at Level 2.

Scholarship is also available in most Year 13 courses.

NCEA CERTIFICATES NCEA Level 1 Certificate 80 credits at Level 1 or higher Must include: - Level 1 Literacy - 10 literacy credits (English, Te Reo or specific standards in other subjects) - Level 1 Numeracy - 10 numeracy (Mathematics or specific standards in other subjects)

NCEA Level 2 Certificate 80 credits 60 at Level 2 or higher 20 may be at Level 1 Students must have met the Level 1 Literacy and Level 1 Numeracy requirements

NCEA Level 3 Certificate

80 credits 60 at Level 3 or higher 20 may be at Level 2 Students must have met the Level 1 Literacy and Level 1 Numeracy requirements

ENDORSEMENT Certificate Endorsement

Level 1, 2 and 3 NCEA Certificates may be endorsed ‘With Merit’ or ‘With Excellence’.

‘With Merit’ endorsement requires 50 credits at Merit or higher at the level of that certificate or higher.

‘With Excellence’ endorsement requires 50 credits at Excellence at the level of that certificate or higher.

Subject Endorsement Subject endorsement also applies to each subject at all year levels.

To gain a Merit endorsement for a subject, you must gain 14 credits at Merit or higher in that subject in the same year, and at least 3 credits must come from internal assessment and 3 credits from external assessment.

To gain an Excellence endorsement for a subject, you must gain 14 credits at Excellence in that subject in the same year, and at least 3 credits must come from internal assessment and 3 credits from external assessment.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE To be awarded a University Entrance qualification, you must have achieved all of the following:

NCEA Level 3 Certificate

14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved subjects (see table below)

UE numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or higher from specific achievement standards across a range of subjects, or all three specific numeracy unit standards

UE literacy - 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) at Level 2 or higher from specific standards.

To be enrolled in a university you must meet their entry requirements Universities are now setting - their own entry requirements - their own Literacy requirements Some courses may - have specific subject prerequisites i.e. specific Y13 courses - require specific standards

- have higher entry requirements such as a greater number of Merit and Excellence grades

Assessed in an extra exam for each subject, other than for Sport Science (a report is required) and for those for which an extra portfolio is submitted

Only one portfolio may be submitted in Practical Art or in Technology

VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS AWARD Six Vocational Pathways sectors have been established Construction and Infrastructure Creative Industries Manufacturing and Technology Primary Industries Service Industries Social and Community Services Within each sector, specific Achievement Standards and Unit Standards have been identified as either recommended standards or sector related standards. Standards you have achieved may Show you where your strengths lie Show employers where your strengths and abilities lie The standards achieved may contribute towards one or more Vocational Pathways Awards that may be in any one of the six sectors listed above. To receive a Vocational Pathways Award you must Achieve NCEA Level 2 Meet the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy requirements Gain 60 Level 2 credits from recommended standards Of the 60 credits, 20 Level 2 credits must be from sector related standards

At present you can achieve a Vocational Pathways Award only at Level 2.

The course outlines that follow, show where standards assessed against may contribute towards a Level 2 Vocational Pathways Award. You can check your progress towards any of the Vocational Pathways Award in your academic record.

AGRIBUSINESS 13AGBU An introductory course for students interested in business, particularly in New Zealand primary industries. The Agribusiness (Agricultural Science and Business) course offers standards and assessments through Agricultural and Horticultural Science and Business Studies. Entry Requirements An NCEA Level 2 Certificate that includes at least 50 credits from Achievement Standards. Students are strongly recommended to have studied at least one of the following in Year 12: Accounting, Agriculture, Economics, Horticulture, Biology or Chemistry. Course Outline / Key Topics Covered The course examines science and business within the agriculture and horticulture industry. Topics covered include production processes of New Zealand’s primary products to meet market requirements, future proofing, and how value can be added. It also included capital expenditure and businesses response to external influences.

AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE 13AGHRT Entry Requirements 12 credits including an external assessment from 12 Agriculture or at TIC discretion. GATEWAY (Structured Workplace Learning) 13GAT This is a programme that offers Year 13 students the opportunity to trial, in the workplace, their probable career choice. The course involves learning and assessment in the workplace as well as Unit Standards to be completed in class.

Entry Requirements Students who wish to apply for a place in this course must meet the following criteria:

Be working at Level 3 in their other subjects.

Have 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits, preferably at Level 2.

Be prepared to attend the First Aid course in the week before school starts.

Have shown a strong commitment to a particular career choice through previous subject selection, work experience, or career planning e.g. Year 10 Learning and Careers Plan.

OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP 13ODL Entry Requirements

Due to the nature of this course, places are limited and there will be a selection process. Students applying for a place in the course through subject selection will be contacted by the Teacher in Charge before the end of Term 3, 2018.

Acceptance into the course is dependent on full payment of the $440.00 course fee prior to the start of the course.

Students will be required to obtain suitable outdoor clothing.

Students undertaking this course must be willing to lead a team of other students.

Course outline The 13 Outdoor Leadership course may be run in conjunction with the Year 12 Outdoor Adventure course. Students are expected to lead other students in developing their skills. This course aims to be largely student led. Consequently, Year 13 leaders must be self-motivated work in a team environment and assist each other in the variety of activities. Key topics for Year 13 students may include: Snowboarding Rock climbing/ Abseiling Risk management Leadership Kayaking, snorkelling and mountain biking may also be undertaken as a learning context for risk management and leadership.
