El Anatsui was born in 1944 in Onyako, a town near Ghana.

Born while his country was a British colony known as the Gold Coast

Ghana became the first independent political state in sub-Saharan Africa while El Anatsui was a teenager.

Witnessing this shift had an impact on the development on El Anatsui’s mature art.

During his years as a student, he found it necessary to understand local artistic traditions in order to express what it meant to be African in post-colonial society.
