The Faculty organises its teaching and research through departments. Currently, these are: Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography and Environmental Studies, Geology (including the National Key Centre for Ore Deposit and Exploration Studies (CODES)), Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies (IASOS), Mathematics, Plant Science, Physical Sciences, Physics, Psychology and Zoology. Courses in Science are intended to convey the basic principles and methods of science, to develop powers of observation and deduction and to improve the student’s ability to solve problems and to find relevant information in published sources. A science degree provides many employment opportunities. It may, however, be the beginning of specialist training which can be gained through vocationally oriented postgradu- ate study and higher degrees. Scientists are concerned with the search for truth and knowledge, and pursue this through the process of experimentation. Teaching staff are actively engaged in research and it is expected that they will convey through their teaching some of the excitement and enthusiasm generated by the exploration of new frontiers. Note: readers are advised that the Faculty continues to be known as the Faculty of Science & Technology. The Department of Applied Computing & Mathematics (which was to have been assigned to a new Faculty of Information Technology, q.v.) has been renamed the Department of Computing. The Department of Surveying and Spatial Information Science (Faculty of Engineering, q.v.) has been closed and the staff re- assigned to the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Science & Technology.

Academic CounsellingDeputy Academic Deans or Assistant Academic Deansprovide advice to students in the disciplines in which

they intend to major. They conduct counselling sessionsand may be contacted for course advice during studyprograms. The Assistant Academic Dean approvesenrolments on behalf of the Faculty, however in somecircumstances, approval may be referred to the DeputyAcademic Deans.

Correct enrolment in a viable course is the responsibil-ity of the student. Course specifications contained inthis section of the Handbook should be read carefullyand particular care should be taken to ensure that firstyear units lead to appropriate study programs and thecompletion of a relevant degree.

Articulation with other coursesCredit of up to one year may be given for workcompleted in appropriate TAFE and other universitycourses approved by the Faculty.

Bachelor of Applied Science: Schedule 1

Course structureThe framework of the general applied science coursefollows. It is based on the semester-unit, whichnormally involves three hours of lectures and threehours of laboratory work for 14 weeks. The courserequires the completion of 24 such units and thecompulsory core unit Science, Industry and Society.

The normal degree structure for a full-time studentcontains two major fields of study, one minor, the coreunit Science, Industry and Society, and four electives asshown below.

Appendix to Bachelor of Science:Schedule A

In addition to the units listed in the BSc Schedule A,and subject to the academic restrictions and exclusionslisted below, BSc students are allowed to enrol inundergraduate units which are taught by the Depart-ments of Classics, English, History, Modern Languages,Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology, and whichare listed in Schedule A of BA Rules. They are also allowed to enrol in most undergraduateunits which are taught in the Departments of Account-ing & Finance, and Economics, and which are listed inSchedule A of BCom and BEc Rules. The following general principles apply:a) GroupsStudents are reminded that the maximum points thatcan be counted towards the BSc degree from Group 1Ais 9 points; Group 2A is 12 points; and Group 3A is 18points.As a general guide, a unit listed in Group 1 of BA,BCom or BEc Schedule A is treated as a Group 1A unitfor BSc students; Group 2 units in BA, BCom or BEcSchedule A are group 2A units for BSc students, and soon. Some departures from these criteria are listed asfollows and in the Bachelor of Science: Schedule A.Units listed in Groups 1A, 2A and 3A of other faculties’schedules are for students of those faculties only. If indoubt, see the Deputy Academic Dean or FacultyExecutive Officer.(b) Corequisites Corequisites prescribed for Arts,Economics or Commerce degree students do not applyto BSc students who take units from those facultiestowards the BSc degree.(c) Special Conditions

A student enrolling in any of the units listed below issubject to the conditions and limits prescribed in theBSc Rules, as well as any additional requirementsspecified by the Academic Dean or Deputy AcademicDean in each case.(d) ChangesThe Faculty reserves the right to correct errors orinconsistencies; and to make changes, with or withoutnotice, to BSc Schedule A and its Appendices.

Bachelor of Science: Schedule B(Abridged) – Overlapping Units

Faculty does not permit overlapping courses to becounted twice towards the BSc degree. A table ofclashing units has been prepared into a Schedule whereunits in Column 1 clash with units in Column 2. Nounits in Column 2 may be counted toward the BScdegree with the units shown opposite them in Column1 (BSc Rule 4[11]).Full details of this Schedule are available from each ofthe Secretaries of the Science teaching departments, theFaculty Office, the Deputy Academic Dean and theAssistant Academic Deans of the Board of Studies inScience. This list includes only units offered since 1990. Forother prohibited combinations see the earlier BScSchedule B, contact the Faculty Executive Officer.Additional restrictions on units which may not becounted with other units are contained in Rule 4 of therules of the Degree of Bachelor of Science.

[b] KRA252 can be taken with KRA200 Chemistry 2[c] For the purpose of interpreting the BSc Rules, Mathematics is treated as three departments: Mathematics,

Discrete Mathematics and Basic Mathematics. To obtain two second year subjects in Mathematics astudent must obtain 24pts from Group 2 Mathematics.

[d] KMA103 cannot be counted with KMA102. A student already enrolled for KMA102 or KMA103 inanother subject combination and wishing to take Discrete Mathematics as a separate subject must choose9pts from KMA107, 115, 151 and 161.

[e] This subject may be taken only with the Academic Dean’s or Deputy Academic Dean’s approval.Note: In addition to a second year core subject of 12pts, a student can also take further units in the same discipline

provided that such units are not excluded in BSc Schedule B and the student has a second 2nd year core subject fromanother department.
