did you know?A MNRI survey found that approximately half of the 2004 nursing graduates (n=157; 51.6%) were working as nurses or had been offered a position in nursing by the time they completed their final course in the nursing program. Of these graduates, 49% were in full-time positions, 40% in part-time positions, and 12% were in casual positions. The majority of graduates who were looking for a nursing position indicated a preference for a permanent nursing position that was either full time or part time with an EFT of 0.6 or higher.

The majority (79%) of October 2004 graduates indicated that their senior clinical practicum lead to their jobs and 85% were satisfied with their current employment status.

GraduatesFor the past three years, graduate numbers have held steady at around the 350 mark per year. This is a major accomplishment for the Faculty of Nursing and for the healthcare system of Manitoba.

Urban The BN degree is available at the Fort Garry campus. The Faculty also offers the Joint Baccalaureate Nursing (JBN) degree in partnership with Red River College. The BPRN is available province-wide through distance education.

Northern First year of the BN degree program was offered on-site in Norway House. In conjunction with the University College of the North, the Joint Baccalaureate of Nursing (JBN) degree is also delivered in Thompson and The Pas.

Increasing Enrolment The graph on the left clearly indicates that the demand for university-based education remains steady. Since 1996, enrolment has almost tripled.

Undergraduate Admissions Admissions increased by more than 160% since 1998. The application data suggest that interest in a nursing career is high, as indicated by the number of applications. Year after year, with the increases in applications, there have been far more applicants than seats available in the program.

Program StatisticsTotal enrolment in the BPRN has remained steady in recent years (2001R = 178; 2002R = 207; 2003R = 211), at approximately 200 students. The Faculty was pleased to welcome 100 new admissions to the BPRN for September 2004.

Nursing Summer Term (NST)The Faculty of Nursing established NST in 1999 to accelerate students, allowing them to complete the BN degree in three years or less. In 2004, 182 students enrolled in NST. These numbers do not include the 127 fourth year students who completed 49.429 (practicum) from the Fort Garry and Red River campuses; nor the 32 students from Brandon. In 2004, NST has been scaled back to offering only fourth year courses.

Conditional Grant ProgramFunding has been provided to nursing students through the Nurses Recruitment and Retention Fund’s (Manitoba Health) Conditional Grant Program. Applicants must be: a recent graduate from an approved program and within six months of initial registration; and willing to relocate to a site in rural Manitoba. Graduates agree to provide a minimum of one year of service in Manitoba per loan received.

Message from the Acting Dean – Dean Care, RN, EdD

e are pleased to present the 2004/05 Faculty of Nursing

Annual Report. We have come a long way from our humble beginnings, to being the only institution in Manitoba dedicated to educating nurses through a full-range of programming from the baccalaureate to PhD level. The Faculty of Nursing is poised to undertake change again, as the 2005/2006 regular session is upon us.

Today, over 1500 students, pursuing three different degree programs, and nurses enrolled in our continuing education programs grace the hallways of our building and off-campus program sites. More than 90 tenured/tenure track faculty, instructors, and clinical faculty teach, conduct research and provide service that benefit our students, the university, the local community, and the Province of Manitoba. Support staff, numbering more than 30, help us all navigate through our daily endeavours and pursue our long term goals. In fiscal

year 2004/05, our expenditures totaled over $10 million, and our renown and skilled researchers brought in over $1.4 million dollars in research funding.

Each year, this report highlights the progress and growth of our Faculty. From improving curriculum to investigating new areas of research, we are leading the way to promoting nursing education within a complex and integrated health care system. Our faculty members are award-winning and dedicated to the future of nursing, education, research, and practice. They are involved in the practice community, bringing research findings to the workplace; and mentoring future researchers to do the same. Our students are bright and eager to make a difference in the world through their chosen profession. A large proportion of our students (26%) make the Dean’s Honour List. Our graduate students are also skilled at receiving funding and recognition for their research and work. These are great accomplishments for a

professional faculty such as Nursing. We are very proud of our nursing students and graduates.

I invite you to explore our report and see where we’ve been, and more importantly, where we are headed. My term as Acting Dean finishes on July 1, 2005. I am pleased to hand the responsibility of bringing this Faculty more into its own to Dr. Marlene Reimer, our incoming Dean. We are all eager to see how her vision will shape the future here at the Faculty of Nursing. We have become very good at accomplishing our goals and objectives, and now it is time to spread our wings even further. It is indeed an exciting time to be at the Faculty of Nursing.

Finally, at the end of this report there are appendices that highlight funding, research initiatives, and individual contributions.

On behalf of the Faculty of Nursing and the many faculty, students, and staff

who commit themselves to promoting university-based nursing education, we are very pleased to provide this review of our year’s activities. Please do take time to enjoy our Annual Report and the many successes noted herein. You can contact us at (204) 474-7452 or via e-mail at [email protected] if you have any questions about this Report—or if you would like to offer any comments.

Undergraduate Programs (Academic Affairs) – Wanda Chernomas, RN, PhD

he size and complexity of undergraduate programming

requires the efforts of many individuals to ensure quality programming. Coordinators play an instrumental role in this regard through their numerous and varied activities such as, addressing faculty and student issues, supporting course delivery, interpreting policies, and facilitating links with others within the academic and health care community.

In relation to the four year program, a curriculum development process has shifted to a curriculum revision process. Building upon the work of the Curriculum Development Committee, the Curriculum Revision Committee (CRC) has been actively engaged in revising the current curriculum and is bringing forward changes to the curriculum in stages.

Revisions to the admission criteria were approved by Senate and will be implemented in two phases. Revisions to the minimum acceptable adjusted grade point average will be implemented in 2005. The second phase will be

implemented for the 2006 admission year, and include changes to the minimum number of credits needed for admission and specific courses required.

The Teaching Team Leaders hosted a faculty retreat on April 15 to discuss the implementation of the updated and refined conceptual framework - Health Promotion Across the Lifespan. The CRC anticipates further revisions will be finalized and implemented over the next two years.

The Faculty retreat, themed, Promoting Excellence in Teaching, was held in December 2004. Presentations and discussions included: Providing culturally sensitive professional education by Rosalyn Howard (Manager, Learning and Development Services); Addressing the unique challenges facing aboriginal students by Dr. Fred Shore (Executive Director, Office of University Accessibility) and Kali Storm (Director, Aboriginal Student Centre). Nicole Harder (Learning Lab Coordinator) and Penny Davis (Four Year Program Coordinator) provided a report on the Canadian Association

of Schools of Nursing Task Force on Clinical Education; and Sandy Gessler, (Coordinator: Clinical Practice and BPRN Program) provided a report about the new Canadian Registered Nurse Exam Blueprint.

In the delivery of the undergraduate programs, it is important to develop and maintain partnerships with colleagues in practice. For example, in Winnipeg, a program liaison committee, with representatives from the nursing leadership council and faculty administration, meet regularly to discuss issues affecting nursing practice and nursing education. This year, the group hosted a day long meeting for faculty and Winnipeg based nursing leaders to exchange updates on local and national educational issues and planned changes in health care delivery, in particular, nursing services. There was opportunity to discuss specific strategies to facilitate partnerships and enhance clinical practice education.

The Faculty shared in hosting the Western Region Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing conference held

in Manitoba in February, 2005. The conference is a forum to discuss nursing education issues and share research findings with nurse educator colleagues from Western Canada. Faculty from all sites and partners participated.

Through the dedication of faculty, staff and students, and our partners and supporters, approximately 298 graduates are eligible to enter the profession of nursing with a BN degree from the University of Manitoba this calendar year.

Undergraduate Programs (Student Affairs) – Christine Ateah, RN, PhD

he Nursing Students’ Association Council (NSAC) Co-Sticks

Mr. Jason Perche and Ms Monica Tardi have been dedicated and hard-working in promoting student activity and involvement in the Faculty of Nursing and Student Council. It has been a pleasure to meet with both on a regular basis to work together in addressing concerns and improving student experiences in our Faculty and to participate together in educational and social events.

We continue to work closely with our partners in undergraduate nursing education; Brandon University (in transition), Red River College, University College of the North (formerly Keewatin Community College), and the Norway House Cree Nation Community. Good communication and open dialogue are the keys to successful partnerships and I would like to express appreciation

to all our partners for their dedication and hard work in facilitating successful programming.

The Office of Student Services at the Faculty of Nursing works closely with many other colleagues and departments university-wide. We greatly appreciate the work by our dedicated communication and English language instructor, Ms. Cosette Taylor-Mendes, for her work with our students and development of resources for their benefit. I would like to also express thanks and appreciation for all the support and expertise provided by our colleagues in the departments of Enrolment Services, Student Advocacy, Disability Services, ACCESS, the Learning Assistance Centre, Counselling Services, and the Aboriginal Student Centre.

The high numbers of applicants and registered students in the Undergraduate

Programs in the Faculty of Nursing are well supported by our hard working Student Services team. Thanks to Ms. Karen Dempsey, student services coordinator; Ms. Catherine Johnston, registrar; and student advisors: Ms. Karen Nickerson, Mr. Martin Speight, and Ms. Terri Tauffenbach. Appreciation is also extended to Ms. Janet Berard, undergraduate program assistant; Ms. Pam Achtemichuk, CAICN/placement assistant; and Ms. Eva Brasko, student services assistant. These individuals provide excellent support and resources for recruitment to admission and registration processes to ongoing faculty and student support and advisement.

The Faculty is very proud of our students and their successes and accomplishments. We acknowledged the many scholarships and awards that they earn as nursing students, as nurses and leaders, and as they continue in graduate education.

Best of luck to the Graduating Class of 2005, and sincere thanks to all the faculty and support staff who worked so hard to educate, guide, and support our students in their journeys to success.

Four Year Baccalaureate Program – Penny Davis, RN, MEd

he past academic year again had a large enrollment of nursing students

(240) enter the Four Year Baccalaureate Nursing Program at the Fort Garry campus. Our University 1 courses of Introduction to Nursing and Growth and Development are very popular, with over 600 students enrolling in these courses.

Highlights of the Academic year include:Our Clinical Education Facilitators (CEF’s) are an integral part of students’ clinical growth and development. To help our CEF’s meet the needs of the students we have various workshops/seminars throughout the year to facilitate their role with our students.

A general orientation for new CEF’s was held in early September. New CEF’s were encouraged to delve into the expectations of students in the clinical area as well as within the Faculty of Nursing. Various methods of evaluation were discussed and encouraged. Different scenarios were put forward to help the new CEF’s adapt to a wide variety of student situations.

In January 2004, Dieter Schönwetter facilitated a workshop for our CEF’s entitled, From Personal Confidence to Student Confidence: A Vicarious Transfer. This workshop was very well received and appreciated.

The continued large number of nursing students has encouraged us to look at different areas of clinical practice. We continue to find innovative ways to facilitate our students’ learning. We work closely with the WRHA and clinical sites to enhance our students’ learning. We presently are expanding our community experience to include not only maternal/child and geriatric experiences but palliative and mental health experiences as well.

Continued efforts have been made to meet the growing needs of our student nurses. In an attempt to improve the clinical component of the nursing program in third year, we have extended the clinical experience from 6 hours to 8 hours per day twice a week for a 9 week period. This time frame allows the student to gain more theoretical background before beginning their clinical rotation and also helps the student feel more secure in successfully completing their care. This pilot project was started in the 2003 Nursing Summer Term. The project proved to be so successful that the clinical course has been adjusted to accommodate the different time frame.

We continue to host our half day orientation for our students transferring from Red River College to finish their

final year of the program. Our student services group provided information about registration, exam scheduling electives and graduation.

I would like to commend our Communication/English Language Instructor, Cosette Taylor-Mendes as she continues to make a great impact on our students’ progress through the program. She has been extremely successful in assisting students with term papers, speaking in clinical practice, reading and understanding the textbooks and studying for multiple choice exams. Cosette has developed many innovative ways to enhance our students learning and we are very pleased that she will be returning to work with our students in the fall. The Four Year Baccalaureate Nursing Program and Disability Services have worked together this year to help students with disabilities meet the standards necessary to be successful within the field of nursing. A one day workshop was put on by our Learning Lab instructors where students with disabilities could observe what nurses do during the course of their workday. This pilot project was so well received and appreciated last year that we are hosting another workshop this year.

The Faculty of Nursing continues to be involved with the ACCESS program. Thanks in good part to Sharon Burns our ACCESS students are finding the assistance they need to be successful.

Our Nursing Summer Term is gradually drawing to a close as this year we have offered only fourth year in its entirety. Approximately 250 students were accepted for fourth year study for the summer term. We are also offering our Research Methods course and our Prevention of Illness course as well as our two University 1 courses of Introductuion to Nursing and Human Growth and Development.

The Teddy Bear Picnic continues to be a highlight for many of our nursing students. It is heartwarming to see the volunteers generously care for many teddy bears, bunnies, puppies and even the occasional frog. Everyone had a terrific time and all animals recovered.

The Faculty of Nursing continues to be involved with Mini University. An energetic, well qualified nursing student instructor did an excellent job of promoting nursing to children ranging in age from 10-16 years.

Learning Labs – Nicole Harder, RN, MPA

uring the past academic year in the Learning Labs, we have

continued to educate undergraduate nursing students by using case scenarios, simulations, audio-visual technology, and equipment used in the practise setting. This has allowed students to learn and practice psychomotor and clinical decision making skills in a realistic and safe environment.

Teaching and LearningScenarios and simulations continue to be successfully used as the primary teaching method. In the 2nd year Nursing Skills course, all of the videos are now online and are available for students to view at their convenience. The 3rd year videos are in the process of being uploaded and will be ready for the September ‘05 academic year. The videos use the Lab Instructors as actors and take place in the Patient Care Labs, both of which have been proven to increase interest and retention of content. Alternative forms for video viewing are being investigated for Nursing Health Assessment.

In the Learning Labs, we are continually seeking to accommodate all students and provide them with positive learning experiences. This year, Theresa Bowser (lab instructor) was recognized by Disability Services at their annual award

ceremony to acknowledge professors on campus who have made a significant effort to accommodate students with disabilities.

ResearchUsing familiar actors and humour in videos has been shown to increase retention and interest in education videos. Theresa Bowser, Marlee Enns, and Nicole Harder presented a poster titled Evidence-based, familiar face: How using familiar actors increase interest/retention in educational videos at the Nursing 2005 Symposium in New Orleans.

The Learning Labs are nearing completion of the Minerva Safe Manitoba project that addresses safety in body mechanics for new members of the workforce. The Web CT program includes video segments and text material on safe moving, lifting and transferring of patients. It also includes scenarios that will address and help the student respond to unsafe clinical situations. Upon its completion, this program will be shared with other nursing programs in Manitoba.

Integrating TechnologyComputers have been placed in the labs and are available for student use. Frequently, students will watch the

online videos while practicing in the lab. Clinical decision making software is being previewed to be added to these computers. With the increased interest in simulation centres, the Learning Laboratories have researched options regarding human patient simulators. Nursing laboratories and simulation centres in New Orleans and San Diego have been visited to see how other nursing faculties have incorporated simulations. Communication between the WRHA and Faculty of Medicine has been ongoing to explore these possibilities.

University partnersThe learning labs continue to provide and facilitate a workshop on intravenous therapy for the Faculty of Pharmacy. In November, in conjunction with the department of Environment Sciences, the lab instructors, along with four undergraduate students, participated in the Collaborative Mercury Research Network (COMERN) General Congress by taking blood samples from research participants. We have also provided a workshop titled A Day in the Life Of Jake for Disability Services that allowed potential applicants to the Faculty of Nursing to gain a better understanding of the some of the technical skills that are taught in nursing. We continue to

hold annual workshops for the Clinical Education Facilitators to ensure that there is continuity between what is being taught in the Learning Labs and how skills are practised in the clinical setting. Our own “Jake” (practice mannequin) is also providing assistance to the Faculty of Engineering, as he is currently on loan to them as they look at how to better use robotics with ultrasound equipment.

Community partnersIn fall of ‘04, the instructors provided a workshop for the public health nurses in the WRHA on intramuscular injection in infants. We also provided a workshop on pediatric catheterization for the physicians and nurses of the Red River Valley Health District. As part of Discovery Days in Health Sciences, we held two workshops on nursing skills at the Bannatyne campus. The nurses from Jane’s Clinic have used the lab to refresh and practise their IV insertion skills. The labs are also involved with the public school system and has hosted the grade 4 class of the Hampstead Elementary School, as well as the grade 11 and 12 biology classes of Grant Park High School. These projects and ongoing relationships are important to the Learning Labs and we are pleased to be able to continue to support these activities.

The University of Manitoba confers Outreach Awards to faculty and staff who have made exemplary contributions to the broader community. Marlee Enns (lab instructor) received such an award for her work in Ethiopia. We are very proud to have Marlee as part of our Lab Team.

The Lab Instructors continue to sit on policy and procedure committees for the tertiary care hospitals, and this summer, we will be embarking on a new project that will see all four instructors each spending one month in various practise settings. The purpose of spending time in the clinical/practise areas are to ensure currency and relevancy of content taught at the University to what is required of our students in the practice area. We are excited about this project and look forward to working more closely with our practice partners.

ConclusionThis past year, the focus of the Learning Labs has shifted slightly to become more closely linked with our practise community and to enhance our visibility within the University itself. This has been both challenging and rewarding, and has allowed us to extend ourselves into other areas. The end results are Learning Labs that facilitate student learning in a manner that is both current and relevant to the practise community in which we serve, and where students will ultimately practise.

Norway House – Dean Care, RN, EdD

his past year was a time of transition at our Norway House program site.

The year began with 22 second and third year students traveling to Winnipeg to attend school at the Fort Garry campus. Students attended an extensive orientation to the Faculty of Nursing, Dafoe Library, and clinical agencies in late August and early September. Grant

Queskekapow, Student Advisor, traveled to Winnipeg on a regular basis over the academic year to provide counseling and support services to our Norway House students.

As a result of a faculty resignation and a research study leave, the Norway House program was modified. In 2004-2005,

only the first year of the baccalaureate nursing program was offered on site in Norway House. Twelve first-year students were admitted to the Continuing Education Division of the UM. Courses were offered by faculty from the University College of the North, Inter-Universities North, and the Faculty of Nursing.

The Faculty of Nursing, Norway House Cree Nation, and the University College of the North are committed to envisioning and developing a new partnership agreement for nursing education in the North.

T

Red River College – Karen Wall, RN, MN

he Red River College/University of Manitoba Joint BN Program began

the 2004-2005 academic year with an all time high enrollment of 297 students, 100 of whom were new Year One students. InitiativesFaculty and students in the JBN Program were research subjects for University of British Columbia Nursing PhD student Donna Martin. Ms Martin conducted interviews with faculty and aboriginal nursing students as part of her dissertation project on the experiences of aboriginal students in Canadian Nursing programs.

The RRC Nursing Department took the lead role in developing new appeal policies for clinical practice grades in all health-related programming at the college. The new policies were approved by the RRC Senior Academic Committee in early October.

The RRC Chair of Nursing participated in an inaugural discussion with representatives from the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD), the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) and RRC Aboriginal Education. The topic of discussion was the need for more

aboriginal nurses and how CAHRD can become involved in nursing education, in particular with RRC.

In an effort to address the many issues associated with the reality of the multi-cultural classroom, the Nursing Department established a new Cultural Diversity Committee. The committee consists of two staff members and four students from non-North American Cultural groups. The general purpose of the committee is to review and make recommendations to the department about culturally-related concerns and educational needs for both staff and students.

The RRC Nursing Department, the RRC Educational Assessment Services and staff from the Nursing Access Program developed new policies that will enhance the ability to assess and ensure readiness of access students in relation to reading skills prior to entering the Joint BN Program.

Faculty from the Nursing Department and the Community Services Department are working jointly on an initiative to develop a policy on “professional unsuitability” in the RRC Human Services Programs.

EventsThe Western Region of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Annual Conference was held at the Hotel Fort Garry from February 17th to 19th. Although jointly sponsored by the nursing programs at RRC, U of M, Brandon University and UCN, Conference Planning Committee members were all RRC Nursing Department Staff - Leslie Walsh, Chair and members Kris Metcalfe and Joanna Simmons-Swinden. More than 20 RRC Nursing Department Staff members participated in the various conference planning sub-committees.

On April 15th, the Nursing Department had an in-house Staff Development day. The two topics addressed were: “Dealing with Bullying Behavior”, and “Dealing with Generation X and Y in the Classroom”.

The Chair of Nursing represented RRC at the proclamation of Nurses Week held at the legislature and brought formal greetings from RRC. The proclamation was signed by Health Minister Tim Sale. Baccalaureate Program for Registered Nurses – Sandy Gessler, RN, MPA

he Baccalaureate Program for Registered Nurses provides

an important and unique learning opportunity for registered nurses seeking a undergraduate degree in Nursing. The program is designed to build on practising nurses’ previous educational and work experience. The goal is to contribute to the individual’s personal and professional growth and career advancement through an educational experience.

The BPRN attracts practising nurses at all points in their nursing careers. Many see attainment of a nursing degree as a source of new ideas and perspectives to enhance their direct care practice while others see it as a way to increase career opportunities. Those entering the program late in their careers often view earning their BN degree as a highly personal achievement. Graduates of the current Red River College diploma nursing program are expected to be a continued source of applicants for the BPRN. Information sessions are conducted with this potential applicant pool. The first group of nine graduates from the RRC program were admitted to the BPRN in 05R. The majority of students in the BPRN attend classes on a part time basis. Courses are scheduled so students can combine work and study.

Web Based Course DeliveryAn important objective of the BPRN is to ensure access to courses for all students with special consideration for those students who, because of distance or other circumstances, need or prefer, to take courses via distance delivery methods. In the past all core courses and several nursing electives were formatted for print based delivery. With the rapid development of web based technology and the popularity of personal computers with high speed Internet access the trend in distance education is to convert print based courses to web based delivery. Five of the core program courses and one nursing elective are now offered by Web CT. These are offered on an alternating basis with the traditional in-class option. A small number of print based courses will continue to be offered to ensure course access to students who require distance delivery but may not yet have reliable Internet access.

Program StatisticsTotal enrolment in the BPRN remains steady at approximately 200 students. The Faculty was pleased to welcome a total of 96 new admissions to the BPRN for September 05. The following provides data on trends over the most recent 3 year period:

05R 04R 03RTotal Graduates 38 39 39New Admissions 96 200 107Total Enrolment* 230 246 225

*All students enrolled in BPRN courses, including regular program admissions, as well as students enrolled through Distance Education and students with Special Students (SS)status.

Collaborative Adult Intensive Care Nursing Program (CAICNP)The Collaborative Adult Intensive Care Nursing Program is a specialty program offering within the BPRN. It offers registered nurses the opportunity to develop advanced skills in the assessment and management of patients experiencing critical and often life threatening illness. The program is provided in partnership with the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre and St Boniface General Hospital. Students attend theory and lab courses and undertake their clinical experiences at one of the hospital sites. Course credits earned for the successful completion of the theoretical component of the program can be applied toward the BN degree, as well as toward a certificate in Intensive Care Nursing. The CAICNP was offered once over 05R at the HSC site. Eighteen students were admitted

with 13 completing the program.

The CAICNP is an important career option for nurses with an interest in this highly specialized area of patient care. It plays a vital role in insuring that this specialized nursing workforce is continually renewed.

CelebrationsThe BPRN students celebrated the completion of their degrees with a breakfast held at the Niakwa Country Club in early June. The event was attended by approximately 40 students family and friends of the graduates and several faculty members. Each graduate in attendance received an gold key chain on which the letters BPRN were engraved. Thank you to the graduating students for inviting faculty as their guests. A special thanks to Sylvia Flint and Jody Binnun for all their efforts in making this event a success.

I would like to recognize Karen Nickerson, student advisor, for her excellent work with the BPRN students. I am also grateful to Dr Wanda Chernomas, Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs for her continuing support and guidance during this past year.

Clinical Placements – Sandy Gessler, RN, MPA

linical placements ensure that each student in the Four

Year Undergraduate Program has the necessary exposure to learning opportunities in the real world of health care delivery. Smaller numbers of placements are required for the Baccalaureate Program for Registered Nurses and the Master in Nursing Program.

There are six clinical courses in the Four Year Program curriculum. In “clinical” students apply theoretical concepts, practice skills learned in the laboratory setting and develop confidence and clinical judgment. Clinical learning experiences build on one another as students move through the program and are expected to manage increasingly complex patient care. Clinical courses provide clinical teachers with the opportunity to assess students’ practice and evaluate their performance against accepted standards of care and course expectations. Each student requires two to four placements each year resulting in a total of over 2000 placements per year. Coordination of such large numbers of placements is a challenge as competition for placements intensifies each year as demands from other programs continues grow. Regular meetings with representatives from Red River College

and College Universitiare St Boniface have become an important part of the planning process to ensure coordination and communication among the main Winnipeg based nursing programs.

Clinical placements require careful and accurate communication, data entry and maintenance of excellent working relationships with our nursing practice colleagues. I want to express my thanks to Pam Achtemichuk, Clinical Placement Assistant for her hard work, skill, patience and good humor in often challenging circumstances.

Placement Data The following provides approximated data regarding undergraduate (Four Year Degree program and BPRN) clinical placements for 04/05:

Total number of placements 2000 Number of agencies 60Number of individual units/offices/departments 148Number of clinical course sections 13Number of students placed 750Number of senior practicum placements 250

Agency AppreciationThe Faculty of Nursing hosted its annual

appreciation reception in May. This event is our opportunity to say thank you to all our practice colleagues involved in students clinical placements from nurse managers to education liaisons, preceptors and direct care nurses. This years event was held at the University Club and was attended by approximately 80 guests and faculty members.

At this years reception four placement sites were recognized for their outstanding contribution to nursing education. Representatives from each site attended to receive a recognition gift. The sites recognized this year were: Catherine’s Place Seniors; 7AS (surgery) at St Boniface Hospital; Level 5B, units 4-5 and 6-7 (medicine) Seven Oakes Hospital and the combined Labour and Delivery/Post Partum/LDRP expereince at the Women’s Centre of the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre.

Many thanks to Janet Berard, Undergradaute Program Assistant, for her assistance in organizing this event.

The Faculty of Nursing is grateful to the hundreds of bedside nurses, unit managers, nursing education liaisons and administrators who have been instrumental in providing student placements and for working closely with

our students and clinical instructors. In spite of heavy demands for placements our requests are not often refused.

Clinical teaching and learning will continue to be an essential and dynamic component of nursing education. There are many challenges for the future such as finding new and creative ways to ensure that student learning and that clinical experiences keep pace with the changing trends in health care delivery, the principles of Primary Health Care, inter-disciplinary collaboration and the expanding role of registered nurses in health care delivery.

International Affairs – Janet Beaton, RN, PhD

he Faculty of Nursing’s $1,000,000 CIDA funded project in Cuba

entitled “Strengthening Nursing Practice in Cuba Through Education and Research” began in July 2004 with an inception mission headed by the Project Director, Dr. Judith Scanlan. The overall goal of this six year project is to improve Cuban health and well being at the community level by strengthening Cuban nursing’s capacity in education and research and enhancing nurses’ participation and role in the health care system. The purpose of the initial mission was to lay the groundwork for the major activities of the project and, in particular, develop timelines and a workplan for implementation of the Cuban doctoral program which begins October 2006. During subsequent visits in November and April, Drs. Beaton and Scanlan met the students selected for the doctoral progrm. Together with their Cuban partners at the Instituto Superior

de Ciencias Medicas - Havana and the Ministerio de Salud Publica, designed the Cuban PhD in Nursing Science and presented the program proposal to the Scientific Degree Commission of the

Instituto Superior de Ciencias Medicas where it was warmly received. Dr. Dean Care joined Drs. Beaton and Scanlan for the April visit and during this time, worked intensively on revisions to courses

in the Master of Nursing program with teachers in the program.

In April, Drs. Beaton, Care, and Scanlan visited three institutions in Scandinavia to promote development of faculty and student exchanges, and collaboration in research and teaching. The institutions visited were Mid-Sweden University and Umea University in Sweden and Turku Polytechnic in Finland. As a result of these visits, cooperation agreements are being developed with all three institutions and the first student exchange with Turku Polytechnic is planned for 2006. In May, Professors Ove Hellzen and Lars Lilja from Mid-Sweden University visited Winnipeg to establish a collaborative research project and discuss development and implementation of a jointly taught internet course for students at Mid-Sweden University and at the University of Manitoba.

Faculty Research Initiatives – Lesley Degner, RN, PhD

he Faculty of Nursing had a very successful year in 2004-2005 with

respect to research and scholarly activities. Once again, principal investigators in the Faculty brought in over $1 million in external funding in support of research and scholarship. The projects currently funded fall into four thematic areas: educational innovations, nursing work life, healthy child development, and psychosocial oncology/cancer control. Highlights from each of these areas in 2004-2005 include:

1. Educational innovations: Drs. Judith Scanlan, Janet Beaton and Dean Care are taking the lead in developing a new Ph.D. Program in Nursing and other educational initiatives at Havana Medical University in Cuba. This program received $1 million in funding in 2004 for a six year period from the Canadian International Development Agency, and has as its overall goal strengthening the quality of care provided at the community level through nursing education and research. Two visits to Cuba occurred this year, during which the Ph.D. program and courses were developed. As well, twelve Ph.D. students were selected and began full time English language training. It is anticipated that the PhD program will be approved this summer and courses will begin in October.

Drs. Dean Care, David Gregory, Cindy Russell, and Prof Mary Courtenay received a $100,000 research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to investigate the experiences and impacts of Aboriginal nursing students learning with three types of distance technologies. Findings of this study will add to the knowledge base in this area and contribute to the ongoing improvement of quality distance delivery in the province of Manitoba. This study should also lead to the improvement in retention rates of our remotely located Aboriginal students studying by distance education.

2. Nursing Work Life: This is a growing field of research within the Faculty of Nursing, with two new national grants having been funded. Dr. Lesley Degner received $300,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to initiate a major research program that will investigate the effect of involving front line nurses in knowledge translation activities on the quality of their work life. This project, the development of which was supported over the past four years by the Health Sciences Centre, will involve portraying nursing work life variables using techniques from geography to provide vivid portrayals of how nursing work life changes over time. The chief

decision maker partner in practice supporting this project is Ms. Helga Bryant, Chief Nursing Officer at the Health Sciences Centre.

This year Dr. Lorna Guse and Judy Inglis (Director, Collaborative Research Unit, Deer Lodge Centre) received funding from the Deer Lodge Foundation and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF). Their one year project, “Developing best practice guidelines to prevent and manage resident aggression in long-term care”, will produce guidelines as a foundation for subsequent research on the implementation and evaluation of best practice to prevent and manage resident aggression. This is Dr. Guse’s second grant from the CHSRF—she and Janice Currie (Vice-President and Chief Nursing Officer, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority) are currently funded to evaluate a new strategy (transition facilitator) to assist new nurses to positively integrate into the workplace.

3. Healthy Child Development: Dr. Bill Diehl-Jones is Co-Principal Investigator on a newly funded project from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research with Principal Investigator Dr. James Friel from Human Nutrition and Dr. Aaron Chiu, Department of Pediatrics. This

three year grant is valued at $118,000.00 per year, and is focused on nutritional factors important in maintaining the health of premature and/or low birth weight infants. In particular, the investigators are examining the role(s) of human breast milk in mitigating oxidative stress in these patients, and combines the expertise of Dr. Diehl-Jones and his CFI-funded laboratory infrastructure with the clinical and nutrition expertise of the other investigators. Dr. Diehl-Jones is Principal Investigator on another grant from the Manitoba Institute of Child Health that is exploring the role of supplemental glutamine on hypoxia-induced ion balance in human neonatal intestinal cells. He is also investigating the effects of dietary supplements on the expression, localization and function of Cx43, a gap junction protein in intestinal epithelial cells.

Dr. Maureen Heaman received a grant from the CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) under their Workshop Funding Program to support the workshop entitled “Developing a Canadian research agenda in prenatal care” to be held September 8-9, 2005 in Winnipeg. This workshop will bring together a group of investigators from across Canada and a consultant from the

20

United States to develop a program of research related to prenatal care.

4. Psychosocial Oncology/Cancer Control: In 2004 Drs. Roberta Woodgate and Michelle Lobchuk took up their Research Scientist Awards from the National Cancer Institute of Canada. These awards provide six years of protected time to enable them to build their research programs. Dr. Lobchuk was also awarded her first 3-year operating grant from the same agency to investigate the stigma associated with lung cancer, and Dr. Thomas Hack received a fourth operating grant in the same competition for his series of studies on the effect of audiotaping the initial consultation between newly diagnosed breast and prostate cancer patients and their oncologists on their psychosocial outcomes. Two new awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research went to Dr. Roberta Woodgate: one for a 3-year study of Parents’ and Children’s Decisions and Experiences in Childhood Cancer Clinical Trials, and another to develop an international pediatric oncology nursing research network. An important landmark achieved in 2005 was the renewal of the Chair Program, “Development of Evidence-Based Nursing Practice in Cancer Care,

Palliative Care, and Cancer Prevention”, from the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation/Canadian Institutes of Health Research, for a second five year term at $170,000 per annum.

The Rh AwardDr. Roberta Woodgate was recognized for her achievements in research by receiving this prestigious award from President Emoke Szathmary at a reception held at the President’s home on April 25, 2005. This is only the second time in the history of the Faculty of Nursing that this award has come to a member of our Faculty. The award, which comes with a $10,000 fund to support the recipient’s research activities, was for outstanding contributions to scholarship and research in the interdisciplinary category. In giving the award, the President cited in particular Dr. Woodgate’s contribution to the development of new knowledge about symptom management in childhood cancer.

Faculty PublicationsAlthough members of the Faculty are making significant progress in the area of publication in peer reviewed journals, a three-part seminar series was held this year to examine different approaches

to evaluating our “research outputs”. Journals listed on the International Science Index that are relevant to nursing and health care were reviewed; the system for ranking nursing journals published by the Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature was provided to all faculty members and discussed in some detail; and finally, the ranking of research outputs using the British Research Assessment Exercise was debated. These well-attended seminars produced lively discussions, and a decision was made to analyze faculty publications from 2000-2004 using the first two systems. The results of this analysis will be presented to the faculty in the fall of 2005, and a strategy developed to support faculty as they try to publish the results of their research and scholarly work in increasingly high impact journals.

Significant Publications in 2004-2005Kail, R., Cavanaugh, J., & Ateah, C.A. (2005). Human development: A life span view. First Canadian edition. Toronto: Nelson.

Dr. Christine Ateah is the Canadian author of this text that provides a complete overview of the physical, cognitive and socioemotional domains

Graduate Programs – Judith Scanlan, RN, PhD

he last year has been one of change in the Graduate Program. After

6 years as Associate Dean, Dr. Karen Chalmers retired. During my year as Associate Dean, I have enjoyed meeting and talking to the many students in the Master of Nursing program. Each student brings his/her own unique perspective and experiences and enriches our graduate program immeasurably. The Graduate Program continues to prepare the nursing leaders of the future. Not only does graduate education contribute to professional development and that of nursing as a whole, the program also contributes in many ways to the personal growth of the individual.

Given the mandate of the Graduate Program, over the last year, faculty members spent time thinking about how we might better meet the needs of our students. At a Graduate Studies Retreat in March, we considered the challenges (e.g., curriculum, flexibility, and availability of graduate courses) facing us in the preparation of graduate students for practice, research, administration, and education. Revisions to the Majors stream of the Graduate Program will be developed over the next year.

Consideration of how we can integrate distance delivery options into the course offerings will become part of the overall revisions in the Majors stream. Next year one course each term will begin at 5:00 PM to accommodate nurses who are working. In addition, we will try and offer one of the Majors (Gerontology) off-site at Deer Lodge Centre for the 06R academic year.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) stream continues to be highly subscribed to - total enrollment in this option of the Master’s program is 26 students with 10 students finishing their practicum in the summer of 2005. The NP curriculum was approved by the Board of Directors of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) in February. The regulations for the Extended Practice Registry have been proclaimed by the government. Once the examination (which should be available in the fall of this year) from the Canadian Nurses Association is ready, Manitoba will have NPs practicing as independent first-line providers of primary health care in a variety of primary care and community health settings.

Throughout the year, several events were offered to graduate students to enhance their overall experience in the program. Special programming included: Orientation for New & Returning Students, Meet & Greet, Proposal Writing Workshop, SPSS Workshop, and Library Literature Search and Retrieval. Each of these offerings was well attended. A few full time students worked as Research Assistants in faculty research programs. These Research Assistant positions are an excellent opportunity for graduate students to be mentored and receive first hand experience in different phases of the research process.

The first PhD student in Cancer Control has been admitted to the program and she will begin her studies in September, 2006. This program is offered in collaboration with the Department

of Community Health Sciences. The mutidisciplinary PhD program in Applied Health Sciences was approved at the Council of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Nursing is a partner with the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreational Studies, Faculty of Human Ecology, and the School of Medical Rehabilitation. This program is the first

of its type in Canada and is seen as an innovative strategy in bringing together health care students at the graduate level. It is anticipated that the first students in this program will be admitted in the fall of 2006.

Graduate Student Council – Asha Pereira & Melanie Rausiuk

uring the 2004-2005 year, the Graduate Nurses Association

(GNA) continued to participate in the life of the faculty of Nursing. The year began with the annual orientation event which was well attended by faculty and students. Members of the GNA continue to participate on the many committees within the faculty, gaining further insight into operations and invaluable experience that will enhance career opportunities. This participation is invaluable and essential to ensure student perspective in faculty planning and decisions. One of the struggles the GNA continues to face is engaging students to participate in events. The reality of the student body is that the majority of students are mid-career professionals who are working hard to balance part-time studies, work and family. Additional energy for GNA activities is limited. A pot luck dinner was hosted by the GNA at Asha’s home which also served

as a fundraiser for the organization, Women for Women in Afghanistan. To date we have raised $810 from both graduate students and faculty to support the literacy of women and girls by funding the salary of a teacher for one year in Afghanistan. The year wound up with a social event hosted by Dr. Judy Scanlan, Associate Dean of the Graduate Porgram. At this event the GNA Award for Excellence in Graduate Nursing Education was presented to Dr. Diana McMillan, as well as a gift of appreciation for the advocacy and support work of the Graduate Program Assistant, Louise Sabourin. Finally, we wish to express appreciation to Dr. Judy Scanlan as she leaves her interim position as Associate Dean of Graduate Program. Her guidance, support and insight have been most welcome. We will miss her as our advisor and guide but look forward to working with Dr. Pamela Hawranik next year.
