1.1 WelcomefromtheHeadofDivision

1.2 AboutUs

TheDivisionrunstwoseparatesetsofacademicundergraduateprogrammes,oneinComputingScienceandoneinMathematics.Theseprogrammesaretaughtbytwostaffgroups.ThisHandbookdealsonlywiththeComputingScienceprogrammes.Atanundergraduatelevel,ComputingSciencecanbetakenaspartofaGeneraldegreeorBachelorsdegreeinComputingScience(boththreeyears),oranHonoursdegree(fouryears).HonoursdegreesinComputingScienceareavailableas‘single’honours(ComputingScience,BusinessComputingandSoftwareEngineering)oras‘combined’degrees,inwhichmodulesarepartlyinComputingScienceandpartlyinothersubject(s).Eachoftheseprogrammescanbetakenwithoneyear’sindustrialplacementbetweenthethirdandfourthyears.Inaddition,anAppliedComputingdegreeisofferedasa2+2programmewithForthValleyCollege.ThefirsttwoyearsofthisprogrammearespentatForthValley,withthehonoursyearsbeingcompletedatStirling.Seesection2.1,below.Inadditiontothisrangeofundergraduatedegrees,theDivisionofferstaughtpostgraduatedegreesinBigDataandFinancialTechnology.TheDivisionalsosupervisesMPhilandPhDdegreesbyresearch.StaffresponsibleforthedifferentprogrammesofferedbytheDivisionare:

5.1 OrganisingYourStudy TheUniversitygivesyouagreatdealoflatitudeinhowyouspendyourtime.Ifyouorganise

yourstudyefficiently,itispossibletogetagoodeducationandagooddegreeresultattheendandstillhaveplentyoftimetoenjoyotheractivities.Ontheotherhand,youwillneedtodomuchmorethanthebareminimumofassessedworkthatisrequiredifyouaretodojusticetoyourtalents.

Startanytaskpromptly.Avoidwastingtimeatthestartbydoingtrivialjobs.Examinescepticallyanyreasonsyouinventforpostponingthework.

Ensurethatyourstudytimeisgenuinelyproductive.Areyoureallylearning,orjustwastingyourtime?Forexample,timeiswastedifyoucopyoutnoteswithoutthinkingaboutwhatyouwrite,orattendalecturewithoutpayingmuchattentiontowhatissaid,orsitinthelibrarywithabookinfrontofyouwhiledaydreaming.Bewareofsatisfyingyourconsciencebydoingundemandingtaskswhichsaveyoutheeffortofthinking.

Reviewyourworkfortheday(andalsofortheweekandforthesemester)tomakesurethatyouallotanappropriateamountoftimetoeachofyoursubjectsandtoeachpartofeachsubject.Givetheimportantordifficulttaskspriority.Tacklethemfirst,oratleastarrangeyourstudysothattheworkwhichneedscarefulthoughtorspecialattentionisdonewhileyouarestillfresh.

Mostmodulescontainassessedcoursework,oftenprogrammingassignments.Normallythereareoneortwoassignmentspermodule,andanexaminationattheendofthemodule.Assignmentsusuallyaccountforaround50%ofthefinalmark,andanexaminationusuallyaccountsfortheremainingmarks.Thisdoesdifferinspecificcases.(Theformulaforeachmoduleispublishedinthemodulesyllabus.)Sinceyouwilltypicallybetakingthreemodulespersemester,youmighthaveuptosixassignmentstocompletepersemester.Insomesemesters,assessmentdeadlinesareclosetogether:wedothistoencourageyoutodevelopyourtimemanagementskillsanddecidewhatisthebestordertoapproachthemyourself.Aclosesetofdeadlinesdoesnotmeantheycanallbeattemptedclosetothedeadline-itshouldmeantheexactopposite.Thebestyoucandoistostartworkonassignmentsassoonastheyarehandedout,sothatyoudonothavetorusheverythingatthelastminuteandgainanearlyunderstandingofwhatisneeded.Inmanymodules,assignmentsareeitherautomaticallycollectedfrompre-designatedcomputerfolders(inthecaseofprogrammngassignments)orsubmittedviaCanvas.Ineithercase,fulldetailswillbegivenontheassignmenthandout.Aftersubmission,pleaseensurethatyoukeepyourownpersonalcopyofanyassignmentsubmissionforreference(i.e.donotfurthermodifycodeunlessyouhaveabackupofthesubmittedversionofit).

6.2.2 ControlofAssignmentsTheparagraphabovedescribestheprocessofsubmissionofassignmentsingeneralterms.TheComputingScienceDivisionhasadoptedaprocedureforhandlingassignments,whichisasfollows:

6.9 GuidanceonGroupPresentations

Modulesmayrequirestudentstopresentandworkingroups.Beingabletodemonstrateeffectivenessingroupworkisavaluableskillthatwillhelpyoubothinyourjobsearchandfuturecareer.Groupworkgivesyouanopportunitytodeveloptheseskillsinasituationwherethemostyoucanloseisapercentageofyourmodulegrade,ratherthanyourjob,oryouryear-endbonus.Inthevastmajorityofcaseswefindthatstudentsenjoygroupworkandfindthatitisavaluablepartofthelearningprocess.However,inasmallnumberofcasesgroupmembershavedisagreementsaboutindividualmembers’contributions.Usually,thesedisagreementscanberesolvedwithoutinvolvingtheModuleCo-ordinator.Nonetheless,inordertominimisetheriskofgroupdisagreementsandinextremecasestoaidtheModuleCo-ordinatorintheresolutionofproblems,groupmembersareadvisedtoadoptthefollowingproceduresduringgroupwork:
