BACHELOR DEGREES IN LAW1. In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates for

Awards of the faculty must comply with the UniversityRequirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards listed inthis handbook.

2. In exceptional circumstances and notwithstanding anythingcontained in the University Requirements for UndergraduateCoursework Awards and the Degree or Diploma AwardRequirements, the faculty may in any case in which it may deemit appropriate to do so, dispense with or amend any conditions ofor prescription of these Requirements.

3. Subjects available to candidates are listed in the Master Scheduleof Subjects as subjects with a prefix of LA.

4.1 Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtainadvanced standing as detailed in the Advanced Standing forPrevious Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy andassociated procedures.

4.2 Candidiates are advised that degree specific Award Requirementsmay specify advanced standing provisions unique to that degree .

4.3 Unless the faculty otherwise determines, advanced standinggained for any subject shall be cancelled 11 (eleven) years after thedate of the examination upon which the advanced standing isbased if by then the candidate has not completed the course ofstudy prescribed for the degree.

DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES IN BUSINESS, COMMERCE, ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM

Application of the requirements1. In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates for

Enrolment in awards3. A person who holds an Award listed in General Requirement 1.1

may not be a candidate for that Award in the same discipline.

Advanced Standing4.1 Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain

advanced standing as detailed in the Advanced Standing forPrevious Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy andassociated procedures.

4.2 Candidiates are advised that degree specific Award Requirementsmay specify advanced standing provisions unique to that degree .

4.3 Candidiates are advised that such advanced standing obtainedmay be subject to cancellation as specified within degree specifcAward Requirements .

5. Subjects available to candidates are listed in the Master Scheduleof Subjects as subjects with a prefix of BU, BX, CO, EC, MG orTO.

6. In exceptional circumstances the Pro-Vice-Chancellor with theapproval of the relevant Head of the School may permit acandidate to graduate with fewer than the stipulated credit pointsof study for an Award offered in the faculty.

HONOURS DEGREES IN BUSINESS AND COMMERCE(Discipline areas: Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tourism,Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management)

General Requirements1.1 A candidate for a degree with Honours shall, in the case of

Commerce or Business: (a) complete the requirements of the pass degree, or an

equivalent degree from another university;(b) include in the degree course the appropriate pass degree

subjects, as set out in the program of study for each specificpass degree and described in the Master Schedule ofSubjects as subjects with a prefix of BU, BX, CO, EC, MG orTO, or equivalent subjects from another university;

(c) include in the degree course honours subjects specified inthe specific Honours programs.

Enrolment2.1 An application by a student to enrol for an Honours degree must

be approved by the Head of School. Normally, a student will notbe permitted to enrol for an Honours degree unless a minimumaverage grade of Credit has been obtained in the pass degreesubjects relevant to the field in which Honours is to be taken.

2.2 In the case of Honours programs in Commerce or Business agraduate who has been awarded an appropriate pass degreewithin the faculty may apply to enrol for an Honours degreeprovided the pass degree was awarded not more than twoacademic years prior to the year in which enrolment in anHonours degree is sought. Such a candidate shall comply with therequirements of the pass degree and shall complete suchadditional work (including pass degree subjects) as the Head ofthe appropriate program may prescribe.

Thesis3. The subject of any thesis shall be approved by the relevant Head

of program and the thesis shall usually be presented before 30November in the candidate‘s final year of study, unless otherwisedetermined by the Head of School.

Degree specific requirementsThe Honours program in Commerce4.1 A candidate for the degree shall:

4.1.1 complete the specified program of study for the Passdegree to obtain 72 credit points; and

4.1.2 obtain 24 credit points of subjects specified in theprogram of study for the Honours degree.

4.2 The degree with Honours may be taken in the fields ofAccounting, Finance or Economics.

The Honours programs in Business specialising in HumanResource Management, Management, Marketing, or Tourism 5.1 A candidate for the degree shall:

5.1.1 complete the specified program of study for the passdegree to obtain 72 credit points; and

5.1.2 obtain 24 credit points of subjects specified in theprogram of study for the Honours degree.

Programs of study6. Programs of study for these degrees are available from the School

of Business.

Requirements, the faculty may in any case in which it may deemit appropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend any condition ofor prescription by these Requirements. Any such action by thefaculty shall be recorded for the purposes of an annual review.

5.3 The distribution of the credit points shall meet the minimalrequirements set out in the Schedule in the UndergraduateCourses and Majors.

Advanced standing for prior study6.1 Candidates for the award of the Bachelor of Business-Bachelor of

Information Technology may apply for advanced standing forprevious tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standingfor Previous Studies and Recognised Prior Learning Policy andassociated procedures.

6.2 Advanced standing for prior study granted towards the Bachelorof Business-Bachelor of Information Technology may only begranted for study undertaken in the previous 12 years.

The normalminimum full-time equivalent study time is three years andmaximum 4.5 years, with two of these equivalent full-time yearsspent at JCU.

Supplementary Examination3. A candidate who has failed the final subject towards the degree or

towards admission as a barrister or solicitor and who gained 40per cent or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted asupplementary examination in that subject.

Requirements for completion of degree course1. To qualify for the degree a candidate must have completed

Constitution of the degree2. The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the program in

Bachelor of Music with Honours shown under UndergraduateCourses and Majors.

Entry to Honours degree course3.1 A candidate enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Music may

apply to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honoursin either: 3.1.1 research, if that person has obtained at least a Distinction

in a research-based music subject and a Distinction in apractice-based music subjects as specified by the Head ofSchool;

3.1.2 practice, if that person has obtained at least a Distinctionin a practice-based music subject and a Credit in aresearch-based music subject as specified by the Head ofSchool.

3.2 The faculty may permit entry to the Honours degree by a personwho holds the Bachelor of Music degree of this or anotherUniversity, or who holds an equivalent degree, where it is satisfiedthat the degree justifies candidature for Honours. Candidatesentering after graduation shall complete such conditions ofRequirement 2 as the Head of School may specify.

3.3 The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the majors inMusic with Honours shown under Undergraduate Courses andMajors.

Resubmission for Final Honours4. A candidate shall not be permitted to present more than once for

the final examination in the same honours discipline, but may bepermitted by the examiners to resubmit the honours thesis orcomparable prescribed work.

Award of the degree5. In the award of Honours, consideration shall be given to the

candidate’s record throughout the course.
