Programme InformationThe programme is aimed at general dental practitioners who undertake root canal treatment as a routine part of their everyday dental practice. It explores diagnostic techniques, develops treatment skills, and aims to prevent iatrogenic damage. The postgraduate diploma modules further develop skills, specifi cally skills using the dental operating microscope and knowledge in endodontics, including examination of the evidence base for practice.

The University aims to offer a fl exible and dynamic programme that prepares students to develop the qualities necessary to be effective within their own professional area relevant to the practice of Endodontology.

This programme provides in-depth training in the latest endodontic techniques andskills. Your confi dence in cleaning, shaping and fi lling root canals will increase - and your practice will become more profi table and enjoyable.

“As a general Practitioner, I developed an interest in Endodontics primarily through the 10 day Simply Endo course. The part time MSc at Chester allows me to undertake a comprehensive academic course, whilst maintaining my position in general Practice. The latter enables me to “fi nely tune” my endodontic clinical skills on a daily basis.

Teaching methods are varied and interesting. The morning sessions generally involve discussion of theory, being scientifi cally based with an emphasis on the current literature, and invariably include group discussion and debate. The afternoon sessions are generally hands on, providing the necessary skills to take back into clinical Practice.

The whole programme is fantastically well organised, and is taught in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Mike Horrocks manages to enthuse the group, and maintain a level of thought provoking interest at all times. A thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding MSc that I can strongly recommend to anyone interested in pursuing a postgraduate course in Endodontics”

“The Postgraduate Certifi cate course at Chester University is well known as the course to attend for those wishing to further their studies in endodontics. The Diploma and Master of Science follows the same tradition of excellence. It sandwiches well with the candidate’s own clinical work and the seminars are well structured with enjoyment and informality the order of the day. Research for the various projects are helped by Chester University’s superb on-line library, which gives access to the most current endodontic literature. Added to that, the hands-on sessions are completely relevant to modern endodontics. If, after gaining the Certifi cate, you wish to aim for the Diploma and maybe a Master’s degree in Endodontology I can honestly say this is THE course to attend.”

Rationale for developing the programmeTypically, undergraduate endodontic training is taught at a basic level with little training on contemporary techniques. Increasingly, many dentists are very enthusiastic to increase both their understanding of the disease process and their competency in providing endodontic care to their patients. Over the past few years, there have been numerous published studies that report less than satisfactory standards of endodontic care and inadequate treatment techniques.

These studies suggest that although some dentists are using the techniques taught during their undergraduate careers, a large percentage now use techniques with no evidence of clinical effectiveness. These same articles have also repeatedly emphasised the increasing demand for postgraduate training programmes. The MSc Endodontology programme is designed to offer a unique endodontic training opportunity for dentists who wish to have a thorough understanding of the disease process and to practise contemporary treatment techniques, whilst continuing their normal work schedule.
