Having its roots dating back to 1937, it has been conducting graduate education since 1968. Having steadily grown over the years, the School now has more than 50 full-time research professors and an equivalent number of sessional teachers and support staff. Located in the Drake Centre on the University’s main campus, the School is made up of a number of research institutes and centres, and four primary departments—Accounting & Finance, Marketing, Business Administration, and Supply Chain Management. Also located in the Drake Centre and dedicated to the School is the Albert D. Cohen Business Library. The Asper School is accredited by the AACSB-International, the primary accrediting body of busi- ness schools worldwide, putting the School in the top one-third of business schools in North America and one of only a dozen in Canada to have received this designation. The School serves, in addition to 1,400 undergraduate students, 150 graduate students across three complimentary programs: the Asper MBA, and the School’s MSc and PhD programs. Master of Business Administration (MBA) The Asper MBA is a 60 credit-hour program designed around the role of the manager. The essential underlying theme is business leadership. With 48 credit hours of mandatory courses and 12 credit hours of electives, the program’s key features are: § Leadership Endgame—beginning with a three-day leadership forum, permeating across every aspect of the program, the Asper MBA refines and nurtures the essential attributes and capabilities required for effective and successful business leadership. § General Management Core—supporting the leadership end- game, the program features a well-crafted and balanced set of foundation business courses in marketing, accounting and fi- nance, organization theory and design, human resources, and supply chain management. § Advanced Specializa- tions—beyond the core, the program allows an individual to pursue heightened and recognized specializations in Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Sup- ply Chain Management, or Health Administration. The Asper MBA is an on-campus program employing a many learn- ing mediums including case study, lecture, seminar, projects, and business interactions. Courses are carefully scheduled to maximize full and part-time student interaction and cross-fertilization of ex- periences and viewpoints. Individuals normally start the program in late August, but can also start in January. On a full-time basis, the program can be completed in one year, while on a less than full-time basis an individual can take up to 6 years to complete, with 3 years being the normal part-time duration. Master of Science in Management (MSc) The MSc program in management was created in 2003 to allow individuals, at the masters’ level, to specialize in a chosen manage- ment field. The MSc program is designed to produce graduates who have an in-depth and rigorous understanding in a chosen, focused field of management study. It requires an individual to complete at least 18 credit hours of course work and a thesis or practicum. During the program, students develop both strong subject expertise and complementary research skills. Graduates of the MSc program are uniquely positioned to undertake additional graduate work (e.g., at the doctoral level), to take up staff/research/consultative positions in private or public sector organizations in Canada, or to teach at smaller colleges in Canada or internationally. MSc Students can concentrate their studies in: § Marketing Consumer Behavior/International Marketing and Entrepreneur- ship/Small Business Management § Business Administration Management of Organizations/Industrial Relations/Human Re- source Management/Management Science § Supply Chain Management The MSc program admits a small number of promising individu- als each year, and provides one-on-one mentorship with faculty members throughout their course of study. Doctorate in Management (PhD) The PhD in Management was introduced in the early ‘90s, with the goal of preparing individuals for teaching and research careers in universities, or for applied research positions in the private or public sectors. The program is based upon the premise that con- temporary managerial problems are typically multi-faceted and need to be examined from a perspective that is not restricted by the boundaries of any single discipline. The inter-disciplinary nature of the program extends beyond the Asper School of Business to related disciplines across The University of Manitoba. It requires an individual to complete at least 36 credit hours of course work in addition to a thesis. Only a small number of students are admitted each year. The size is intention-ally limited to provide close and continuous contact between students and faculty. Scholars come to the School from around the world to benefi t from and contribute to the vibrancy of the academic setting. Together, they enrich each other’s learning experience and research productivity.

Research InterestsThe Asper School of Business is one of the best equipped management schools in Canada for research into managerial issues of national and inter-national interest. Researchers in business administration are examining a wide range of issues including organizational change and confl ict manage-ment, job stress, work role socialization, compensation structures, goal set-ting, employment equity and discrimination. Researchers in marketing and entrepreneurship are studying issues of national loyalty in international air travel, how customers perceive price discounts, how the age of the consumer affects the impact of advertising, the effects of buying group membership for small retailers facing a giant competitor entering their market, and youth entrepreneurship.

In the accounting and fi nance area, research programs span issues in international capital markets and corporate fi nance. Other researchers are examining issues such as Internet search strategies and telecommuting.

Research FacilitiesThe Asper School of Business occupies the Drake Centre for Management Studies, one of the fi nest management education facilities in North America. The Centre houses case rooms, lecture theatres, computer laboratories, a graduate study, and research space.

The Albert D. Cohen Management Library is a unit of the University of Manitoba Libraries (UML). UML provides access to over 230 research databases 50 of which have management/business content. Some of the core research databases include those that provide access to the journal literature such as the Proquest suite of products (ABI/INFORM, Canadian Business and Current Affairs (CBCA), Canadian Newsstand), JSTOR, and Blackwell Synergy. Others provide company and fi nancial information: Mergent Online, Corporate Retriever, and FinancialPost .infomart, while E-Stat (Statistics Canada), STAT-USA, and Source OECD Statistics provide a wealth of statistical data. The book collection is kept current through the use of approval plans and other current awareness tools. The Library also maintains a corporate annual report collection, specialized trade directories, and various services for investment.

Academic and applied research is supported in the Transport Institute, the Centre for Accounting Research and Education, and the Asper Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Affi liationsThe Asper School of Business is closely associated with The Associates and The Young Associates Programs, organizations that represent over 400 busi-ness leaders from Manitoba. Both groups have as their principal objective the continuous improvement of the quality of management education in the

Asper School of Business. The networking opportunities provided by these groups are very important for students and faculty.
