Reviewer Perspective • Elements of the proposal
– Focus on the abstract (letter to grandmother) • Why is it important? Why should it be you doing it? • Include specific aims
– Specific aims should follow from abstract • Include hypotheses to address
– Know the criteria for evaluation (significance, investigator, innovation, approach and environment)
• Address them, and provide points for reviewers to base their evaluation

• Be a good colleague – Meet scientists in your field, including reviewers – Develop collaborations (understand what you have
to offer others)
• Get to know program officers – Identify their priorities and find how you can help
them meet their goals
