FALL2019COURSES:CERTIFICATE IN LIFELONG LEARNING

BRONZELEVEL

ARTASANINVESTMENTInstructor: Rob Valli, PhD, Dean, College of Management; Professor of Technology Management, LIU Post Special Guest: A private wealth manager specializing in art as an investment

Aimed at art collectors, investors and enthusiasts, this user-friendly class explains art as an asset through comparison with more familiar investments such as real estate, shares and gold. It draws on extensive research and interviews with investors and key leaders in the arts market. This class considers the growing importance attributed to art as an investment, testing the validity of claims of the arts’ capacity to generate returns that outweigh its risk. How do the characteristics of blue chip art coincide with, and diverge from, the fundamental features of more established types of assets? Key issues to be addressed include the role of subjectivity in the perception of value; the failure of attempts to establish stock

markets for art; the risks and shortcomings of art funds; the banks’ reluctance to lend against art; and the elitism of the art world. Suggested reading: Art as an Investment? A Survey of Comparative Assets by Melanie Gerlis.

SPINOZA:THEPHILOSOPHICALOUTSIDERInstructor: Nathaniel Bowditch, PhD, Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of Philosophy, LIU Post

Among philosophers, Benedict De Spinoza (1632-1677) was best known for his posthumously published book, Ethics, a monumental work that presented an ethical vision unfolding out of monistic metaphysics in which God and Nature were identified. While Spinoza’s philosophical views might initially appear quite odd and counter-intuitive, his insights about the one substance that he called ‘God or nature’ were quite suggestive and relevant to contemporary debates regarding the relationship between human beings and technology, as well as debates about the future of human nature.

MOCKINGBIRDS:AVIANPERCEPTIONANDDECISION-MAKINGInstructor: Daniel Hanley, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology, LIU Post

Although birds are often wonderful parents, some birds (known as parasites) skirt parental care entirely and lay their eggs in other birds’ nests (known as hosts). These foster parents must detect these unwanted parasite eggs, and they often use the color of their eggs as a cue. Scientists have long assumed that the mockingbirds remove parasite eggs that appear very different, but it turns out that they generally keep blue eggs and remove brown eggs (up to 90% of the time). Evolutionary ecologist Daniel Hanley, PhD, who first documented this phenomenon, and whose work was highlighted in the March 2019 issue of Science Magazine, shares his latest research. You will have the opportunity to explore rare and unusual eggs, make your own experimental egg model (such as those used in his field experiments), and develop an in-depth understanding of avian vision.

THETRIALOFHAMLET:ANORIGINALPLAYBYSTEVENBREESEInstructor: Steven Breese, MFA, Dean, College of Arts, Communications and Design, LIU Post

“After five hundred years, Hamlet has something else to say.” Popular culture and classical literature collide as Shakespeare’s most popular character is thrust into the modern media spotlight. The result is a new play that ponders the essential “what-ifs” of Hamlet’s psyche and motivations. Drawn from modern media-trial frenzies and laced with a keen sense of humor, this contemporary re-examination of the Bard’s classic play finds Hamlet defending himself for the brutal murder of Polonius — the forgotten crime embedded in the complex and mysterious world of Shakespeare’s most engaging tragedy. With a cast of characters only Shakespeare could create, this classical courtroom drama takes a pointed and sometimes

irreverent look at our legal system, the media and our culture’s fascination with the famous and infamous.

CURRENTEVENTSTHROUGHTHELENSOFTHEODOREROOSEVELTInstructor: Tweed Roosevelt, MBA, Chairman, Theodore Roosevelt Institute

When Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office as the 26th President of the United States on September 14, 1901, he became the leader of a nation that had changed significantly in recent decades. The population of the United States had almost doubled from 1870 to 1900 as immigrants came to U.S.

cities to work in the country’s burgeoning factories. As the United States became increasingly urban and industrial, it acquired many of the attributes common to industrial nations—overcrowded cities, poor working conditions, great economic disparity, and the political dominance of big business. At the turn of the twentieth century, Americans began to look for ways to address some of these problems. Little has changed since TR’s time, as many of these issues are as topical today as they were during his presidency. In the year 2019, how would TR approach topics such as immigration, the economy, and equality? This class will analyze current events of the day through the voice of TR’s great grandson, Tweed Roosevelt.

THEGREATAMERICANSONGBOOKInstructors: World-Class Musicians Madeline Cole and Richard Iacona; With introductory remarks by Jennifer Miceli, PhD, Chair, Department of Music, LIU Post; Director of Music Education and Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz

American popular music has had a profound effect on music and culture across the world. The songs that make up this achievement have a characteristic sound and ambience. They are immediately distinguishable

from the popular music of other countries, although American popular song eventually came to dominate, or at least influence strongly, that of most other countries which shared the same western musical tradition. The years from 1890 – 1990 were the “golden years” of American Popular Songs. These songs were brought to us by songwriters such as: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Harry Warren, Harold Arlen, Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach and many others. They “made their way” to us through the musical theater, movies and pop recordings. Our presentation will include performances and discussions of many of these wonderful songs, their lyricists and the “tunesmiths” that have enriched and continue to entertain generations of audiences.
