WILD GEESE FOUNDATION

The role of Wild Geese FoundationOur mission is to fight poverty. Although poverty levels are decli-ning, not everybody benefits from this decline. 900 million people worldwide still live below the poverty line of one euro per day. For this reason, we continue the battle, armed with specific projects. We do this in cooperation with a key segment of civil society: the Private Initiatives. Inspired Dutch citizens take action – together with grassroots organisations in the project country, which are known as the “Project Owners.” The latter understand the local situation; they initiate and carry out the project, and more and more often, add their own financial contribution. This is especially the case in middle-income countries. We support their efforts in areas such as training, with the cooperation of four national partner organisations.

More than one tangible project per day 2013 was a remarkable year for Wild Geese Foundation. We were able to support no less than 395 specific projects through the knowledge, expertise, and financial contribu-tions from Dutch society. We also contributed to an additional 198 projects through our partners in Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Africa. Most of the funds for these additio-nal projects were raised in the countries themselves. That means we were involved in a total of 593 projects! 2013 was also a year in which we took steps to address the rapid changes occurring in the world around us. We plan to continue building on the progress we have made in this area in the upcoming years. Finally, it was also a year that witnes-sed the growing strength of our organisation.

Vision A world in which people living in po-verty can improve their situation and their future under their own power.

MissionWild Geese fights poverty all over the world. We provide financial support, knowledge and expertise for projects resulting from joint initiatives taken by people living in poverty together with their communities as well as inspired people from the Netherlands. These projects are small in scale and yield visible results.

Wild Geese methodEvery year Wild Geese Foundation supports hundreds of small scale development organisations (NGO’s, foun-dations, private initiatives) that contribute to fighting poverty worldwide.

Proposing a project and applying for support is the responsibility of the project owner. The project owner, a local (de-velopment) organisation, is also responsible for the implementation of the project. The project owner works in close cooperation with his partner in the Netherlands, which raises a considerable part of the funds for the project. If Wild Geese Foundation approves a project proposal, we will add 55% to the Dutch partner’s fundraising. So, if for exam-ple the project budget is € 15.500, the Dutch partner raises € 10.000, Wild Geese will add a premium of € 5.500.

We also help them stand up for their rights and advocate their inte-rests to the local authorities.

Our essential work would not be possible without the support of our donors, equity funds, institutional supporters, and the National Postcode Lottery. We remain committed to small projects that make a big difference.

In addition, we enhance the ability of people living in poverty to mobilize funds and resources within their own countries, enabling direct as well as structural improvements to their situa-tion and prospects for the future.

WILD GEESE FOUNDATION | ENGLISH SUMMARY 2013 9

Wild Geese Foundation runs a number of program-mes that stem from projects and satisfy the needs of private initiatives and/or grassroots organisations. The programmes relate to current issues. In addition, they establish Wild Geese Foundation as a leader in sustai-nability and places the responsibility for poverty alle-viation where it belongs: not just with impoverished people, but also with the governments, businesses, and middle class in developing countries.

Action for Children: the Wild Geese model exportedDoubling local fundraisingAction for Children receives financing from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2011 and 2015, as one of the three programmes of the Together4Change alliance.

Action for Children has applied the Wild Geese model in Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Africa. There, natio-nal partner organisations raise funds from businesses and the middle class. This money is used to double the contributions of local grassroots organisations. In 2013, Action for Children supported 198 projects.

Our international partner organisations not only help the grassroots organisations through financial support, but also through providing advice and training.

Change the Game: alleviating poverty with contributions from low- and middle-income countriesAt the end of 2013, Wild Geese began the programme Change the Game. The face of poverty has changed; 75% of people who live in poverty come from middle- income countries. That calls for a new approach. Change the Game offers this, building from experience gained from the programmes Action for Children and Capacity Building for Project Owners.

Through Change the Game, we want to use individu-al training modules to teach 10,000 local grassroots organisations and NGOs how to:- effectively fundraise in their own country- strengthen their “claim-making” capacity: their abi-lity and willingness to confront local authorities about their responsibility to offer suitable services to the poorIn the next three years, we expect to distribute one or more digital training modules to 10,000 organisations, with the hopes that they can grow in one or both of the aforementioned areas. A total of 2,000 organisati-ons will follow the complete course and receive remote support. Furthermore, 400 grassroots organisations from Brazil, India, and Kenya (and later Ghana), with which we have already worked, will follow a series of workshops and receive individual coaching. An international portal/website will make information

available to the target group, on subjects such as local laws and regulations related to fundraising, establishment of schools and healthcare centres, and the construction of water and sanitation facilities.

The ultimate goal is that, within three years, thanks to their new knowledge, insight, and skills, all of the-se local organisations will be able to raise at least a combined 10 million euros of annual revenue in their own countries. Moreover, this experience will provide better access to existing, but relatively inaccessible, government services.

The first course will be ready in the second half of 2014, and will lead to the launch of the portal. The national partner organisations of Action for Children in Brazil, India, and Kenya are closely involved in the course development. CESE, Smile, and KCDF will provide the trainers and coaches who will instruct the local organisations and guide them in setting up their own fundraising and strengthening their “claim-ma-king.” We will first enhance the capacity of our trainers and coaches through a “train the trainers” programme that MDF will carry out on our behalf.
