BY 2050, DEMOGRAPHIC GROWTH AND URBAN-IZATION ARE LIKELY TO BE VERY INFLUENTIAL ONCONSTRUCTION. This phenomenon, whichaffects every country, raises an environmen-tal problem in the current context of climatechange. Learning how to build more andbetter with a lower ecological impact hasbecome a necessity. Lafarge is adapting tothese challenges and leading the way, partic-ularly by focusing on the advantages of con-crete. The most-used commodity in theworld after water, concrete benefits fromhigh thermal inertia. In France, a study conducted in 2010 byADEME (the French Environment and EnergyManagement Agency) demonstrated the excel-lent carbon footprint of concrete-block con-structions. Drawing on this material’s immense

innovation potential, the Lafarge researchand development department is devel-oping new solutions which reconcile eco-nomic, social and environmental impera-tives. The new high-performance concretespresent completely new characteristics suit-ed to a range of uses. A new stage was reachedin 2010 with the launch of the Aether project, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions relatedto the manufacture of cement, a componentof concrete. In collaboration with all players in the fieldand as part of its commitment to sustainableconstruction research, the Group is gradu-ally making progress in inventing newways of building which limit CO2 emissions, increase the energy efficiency of buildings andallow complete architectural freedom.
