It's important to remember the following before upgrading FactoryTalk Gateway:

To install or configure FactoryTalk Gateway, you must have administrative rights in Windows on the computers where the software is being installed or configured. The Windows domain Administrator account has these rights, for example.

You must install FactoryTalk Services Platform v2.60.00 (CPR 9 Service Release 6) to use FactoryTalk Gateway v3.60.00 (CPR 9 Service Release 6).

Important: If you are upgrading from RSOPC Gateway CPR 7, do not use Add or Remove Programs from the Windows Control Panel to remove RSOPC Gateway CPR 7 from your computer. Specifically, using this method when upgrading to FactoryTalk Gateway CPR 9 Service Release 6 deletes RSOPC Gateway CPR 7 configuration files. Follow the installation procedure on the FactoryTalk Gateway product DVD to upgrade from CPR 7.

Upgrade Instructions

Perform the following steps to upgrade to FactoryTalk Gateway v3.60.00 (CPR 9 Service Release 6):

1. Stop the FactoryTalk Gateway service using the Stop service button on the FactoryTalk Gateway Configuration dialog box.

2. If FactoryTalk Diagnostics Counter Monitor is running, exit the program. 3. Close the FactoryTalk Gateway Configuration dialog box. 4. Insert the FactoryTalk Gateway v3.60.00 (CPR 9 Service Release 6) product DVD into DVD-ROM.

Perform the installation steps as presented on the screen. Note: FactoryTalk Activation Manager is automatically installed when you click Finish on the FactoryTalk Gateway setup dialog box. 5. Restart your computer.

Important: You must restart your computer after installing Rockwell Software products. If you are installing multiple products, you must restart your computer after all of the products are installed.

System requirements

Note: To install or configure FactoryTalk Gateway, Windows Administrator privileges are required.

To use FactoryTalk Gateway, your personal computer must meet the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

Hardware requirements

To install FactoryTalk Gateway, you need the following minimum hardware:

Minimum: Intel Pentium III, 600MHz, 512MB RAM Recommended: Intel Pentium 4, 2GHz or faster, 1GB or more RAM

Hardware recommendations to support 70,000-tag configurations

To support large (70,000 tags) configurations, select a computer based on the guidelines* below:

*These guidelines are based on the results of tests using a dual-core Pentium D processor, 3GHz, with 2G of RAM. The first test was run using only one of the dual-core processors to provide a basis for comparison. FactoryTalk Gateway and RSLinx Enterprise were installed and configured on this computer for the test.

The total amount of memory used for the runtime tests was approximately 700MB. Additional memory would be utilized if browsing occurred. Note that the largest impact of CPU utilization is the rate the data is changing even if the data server (in this case, RSLinx Enterprise) is local or remote to the FactoryTalk Gateway.

Known issues

Help

Topics in .chm (Compiled Help Module) files do not open when the Help file is opened from a remote computer or a UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path. This affects most Help and Release Notes for Rockwell Software products (91696).

Windows Server 2003 SP1 and security updates 896358 and 840315 include changes to the InfoTech protocol. Microsoft introduced these changes to reduce security vulnerabilities in HTML Help. If you have installed security update 896358, or Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later, you may experience the following symptoms:

The features of some of Web applications on the computer no longer work. For example, a topic may not be displayed after you click a link.

When you try using a UNC path to open a .chm file on a network shared folder, topics in the .chm file do not appear.

As a workaround, open the Help files from the installation DVD, or copy them to a folder on your local computer. If you want the Help files to be accessible from a network directory (shared folder), you must use the Registry Editor to modify certain registry entries. Microsoft does not recommend you doing this, but has provided the steps in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 896054.

DEP settings

What is DEP?

DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is a security feature that is supported by both hardware and software and intended to prevent the execution of malicious code in the Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Vista and Windows 2008 operating systems.

DEP settings

The DEP settings determine which applications and components are covered by DEP protection. They apply to both hardware-supported and software DEP features. On computers with the necessary hardware capabilities, hardware-supported DEP features are enabled for the same set of applications and components as the software DEP features. The following table explains the possible DEP settings and if they are supported by Rockwell Software products.

Note: Rockwell Software recommends that you use the OptIn DEP settings.

AlwaysOn Full DEP protection for the entire system (all applications and components, no exceptions).

Change DEP settings

To change the DEP settings, select Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention. The Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only setting corresponds to the OptIn setting, and the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select setting corresponds to OptOut setting.

Keep the following in mind:

You must be an administrator of the computer to change these settings. You must restart the computer for the DEP setting changes to take effect.

Hardware DEP Settings

Hardware DEP uses the processor to mark memory so that code cannot be executed from data regions. When code attempts to execute in these marked areas, the processor generates an exception. If you are using Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Service Pack 1 and R2) operating systems, the offending program is terminated. Hardware DEP is also enabled as the factory default setting. This feature is turned on or off in the computer BIOS settings.

To determine if your hardware supports DEP, refer to the hardware manual or contact your hardware manufacturer.
