1 factorydesign

Factorydesign is an award winning design agency with a focus on aviation products and cabin interiors. Our expertise is in the interpretation of brand characteristics and values, and converting them into category-leading products and passenger experiences. Our work is driven by high standards for detail and innovation – guided by a strong sense of how products and people relate to one another.

introduction

Delivering creative design solutions to help define the on-board experience, we connect passengers to the brand and design products to deliver better experiences. We interpret brand characteristics and values and convert them into physical touchpoints. Interpretation may be literal through form, function, materials, colour or more subliminal, such as, smell, touch, sound and so on. We deliver all aspects of design, innovation and development in cabin interiors and product design : •  Research and trend analysis •  Ergonomics •  Brand integration •  Idea generation and concepts •  Lopa definition •  Design refinement •  Mockups (spatial to PDR) •  Technical design development •  Colour, materials and finish.

Our work includes the general aircraft interior overview, exploring and defining Lopas for many different types (most recently B777, A330/340, A380, B787, A350 among others) which involves the careful balance of passenger numbers and cabin configuration. This provides the opportunity to integrate destination spaces into monuments and galleys, or as stand-alone elements, to provide self-serve refreshment areas, family zones, duty free displays and so on.

Galleys and larger stowage monuments must not be ignored and add to the complete experience. Often positioned in entrance areas and doorways, they can serve both the passenger and the crew. With two lives, a carefully designed galley can provide the passenger with a rewarding experience on boarding and disembarkation, while also providing the crew with an optimised environment from which to prepare and serve the passengers.

Washrooms, shower rooms and lavatories are another essential part of the cabin environment. These spaces offer more opportunity to provide on-board personality and character, and a further connection to brand attributes.

British Airways Concorde cabin interior When passing through the sound barrier a wave of blue light passed down the cabin to alert ‘once in a lifetime’ travellers to this unique moment, but not so much as to intrude on the lives of regular flyers. Thoughtful passenger experiences were embedded throughout this refit. The Speedmarque seat, a crucial part of a interior uplift, was made lighter with a carbon fibre seat shell and more contemporary, reflecting the elegance of the exterior of the aircraft on the inside.

Etihad Airways B787 cabin interiors Following the creation of the design ambition through the customisation of the A380, we worked for Etihad to adapt and integrate the same vision, as far as possible, into the B787. Again working as the Etihad Design Consortium and within the constraints of a Boeing catalogue and the physical difference in airframes, we have created the same brand characteristics and personality, in the product offer, the details and passenger experience.
