• 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y + y + y to produce the
• equivalent expression 3y
• Objective: Understand how to combine terms with various operations
• Learning target: Answer at least 3 of the 4 factoring questions correctly on the exit ticket.
![Page 3: FACTORING EXPRESSIONS. 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022083009/5697c00a1a28abf838cc7b33/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
• What is factoring? • The opposite of distributing.• This turns an expression into a
term multiplying parentheses.
![Page 4: FACTORING EXPRESSIONS. 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022083009/5697c00a1a28abf838cc7b33/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
• How do we factor an expression?
• Find a factor that can divide every term and put the factor outside of parentheses.
• Copy the original expression inside the parentheses, but divide each term by the common factor.
![Page 5: FACTORING EXPRESSIONS. 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022083009/5697c00a1a28abf838cc7b33/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• Factor:15 + 12y
• 3 is a common factor of 15 and 12y, so that goes outside the parentheses.
• 15÷3 = 5 and 12y÷3 = 4y so those go inside the parentheses (use a + because the 4y is positive)

• Check your answer by distributing

Direct Station• We will use whiteboards/Educreations to write and
simplify expressions based on word problems
![Page 18: FACTORING EXPRESSIONS. 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022083009/5697c00a1a28abf838cc7b33/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Collaborative/Skill-Building Station• You will draw shapes/letters to represent expressions.
You will then separate them into equal groups to represent factoring.
• Example: 6 triangles + 8 squares• Find a way to separate the shapes
into equal groups.
• Write the factored expression basedon your picture
• 2 groups of 3 triangles + 4 squares= 2(3triangles + 4 squares)
![Page 19: FACTORING EXPRESSIONS. 6.EE.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply properties of operations to y.](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022083009/5697c00a1a28abf838cc7b33/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Independent Station• You will continue ST Math’s unit on solving equations.
Those of you who already finished this unit will work on the negatives unit.
