Long ago, the news was fact-checked.
Now, the news is Oprah-checked.
Most people get their news
from TV and the Internet.
Which is more trustworthy?
Health news outlets can build trust by:
• Relentlessly pursuing accuracy.
• Using trusted names or authorities.
• Creating high standards for reporting and accuracy.
• Explaining how we report health news, and disclosing conflicts.
We need to tell people what we do to get it right.
• News organizations should explain their quality assurance standards and procedures.
• Measure compliance with standards, and report that data to the public.
• Create interactive tools that consumers can use to gauge the reliability of health data.
