The two near-production prototypes of the Bio-Hybrid celebrated their world premiere at CES 2019 – marking another milestone for our young startup on the exciting road toward a new form of urban and connected mobility.
Initial sketches of this idea were created in 2014. Since then, we have continually held on to the Bio-Hybrid idea because the ways in which people will move around in the urban areas of the future will change. There’s no doubt in our minds that new mobility concepts and innovative forms of transportation are inevitable in the mobility mix. This takes courage, a pioneering spirit and companies that lead the way.

An effective infrastructure is the key to a livable city. It ensures prosperity and social wellbeing. Thanks to state-of-the-art connectivity, car and ride sharing models will help to decongest traffic. Cross-system networks will make local public transportation accessible also to people whose personal mobility needs it has previously failed to meet. The Bio-Hybrid is more than just a vehicle. It is part of a connected and digital world.
⟶ The vision of urban transportation of tomorrow. Automobiles will be less important than they are today. The importance of local public transportation will increase. Driverless electric people movers and vans will become just as normal as pedelecs and the Bio-Hybrid.
There is no single, perfect means of transportation for our cities. The future belongs to a finely tuned co-existence of diverse systems. With its width of less than 90 centimeters and zero-emission 250-watt electric drive system the Bio-Hybrid is allowed to travel on normal bike paths like a pedelec and requires a third of the parking space of an automobile. It may be operated without a driver’s license and closes the mobility gap between bicycles and cars. In its two versions, Passenger and Cargo, it serves the personal mobility needs of people and goods in the connected city of the future: for the frequently mentioned “last mile” as well as for longer inner-urban distances.

Schaeffler Bio-Hybrid GmbH is the Group’s first spin-off with the flair of a startup. How bold is this move by Schaeffler?
PROF. PETER GUTZMER It was an important move going forward. New forms of mobility require new forms of making them reality. They should be fast, flexible and bold. The concept originated within the Group, so we’re promoting it accordingly. The spin-off was a deliberate strategic decision by Schaeffler. Now the team is tasked to put the Bio-Hybrid on the road.
What role will the Bio-Hybrid play in future urban transportation?
PROF. PETER GUTZMER One of the central objectives is to prevent the impending gridlock in major cities and to make them more pedestrian-focused and livable. This will only be possible by decongesting traffic by means of new,
smart vehicle concepts. We need vehicles that achieve high levels of flexibility in a connected and systematic co-existence while minimizing space requirements. This is exactly what the Bio-Hybrid offers.
The fact that Schaeffler Bio-Hybrid GmbH has full access to Schaeffler’s know-how will be an advantage.

PETER GUTZMER Absolutely, Schaeffler is intensively involved in electric mobility and smart, sustainable system solutions – particularly in the field of transporting passengers and hauling goods in urban areas. This includes novel types of vehicles such as the Schaeffler Bio-Hybrid or the Schaeffler Mover, as well as system components like e-axles, 48-volt systems and hybrid powertrains. Coming from individual products, Schaeffler is evolving into a company that offers complete technological solutions.

Schaeffler Bio-Hybrid GmbH headquartered in Nuremberg and Munich is a fully owned subsidiary of the Schaeffler Group. As a pioneer in the field of electric mobility Schaeffler initially presented the Bio-Hybrid vehicle category in 2016 as a vision for personal mobility in urban areas. This vision is now becoming reality. Schaeffler Bio-Hybrid GmbH established at the end of 2017 now has the mission of continuously developing the Bio-Hybrid to production level and to
