Withallthisthepassengerbenefits.Waitingtimesatthestationsarereducedsincemoretrainsrollinandout.Nothingismorefrustratingthenlongwaitsforthenexttrain.Anotherbenefitisthatshortertrainsandthusshorterplatformsareneededtoreducetheinvestmentinstationconstruction.

TherearealsoargumentsagainstdriverlessPT.Onemostheardisthatadriverisneededtocontrolemergencysituationsin-andoutsideofthetrainsduringtravel.Sincemosttrainsoperatealreadybycomputercon-trol,thisargumentbecomeslessimportant.Remotecontrolandobser-vationssystems,includingon-traincameras,aretodayafractionoftheinvestmentinatotaloperationofPT.Atbusystationsduringpeakhoursasafetyandsecurityofficerridingonthetrainscandothesecuritycontrol.Atlowtraffichoursremotecontrolcameraswithintelligentsoftwaretodetectanyoutoftheordinarysituationshouldbesufficient.
