• This is a 54-hour course of the B1/B2 level of theCommon European Framework of Reference forLanguages.It will be divided into two parts: a theoreticalpart and a practical one.

Methodology

• The THEORETICAL PART will include lessonsand seminaries. Mid-term assessments will beorganized.

• The PRACTICAL PART will require team work.The students, aided by the professor, willapply translation techniques and carry out aclass project.

Assessment

• The final exam will include a written test, aiming atassessing the students’ acquisition of TranslationTheories and practice. After answering a couple ofquestions, the students will be asked to translate ashort text and shortly comment their translationchoices.

• For those students who will regularly attend thelectures, the final mark will be made up of mid-term assessments as well, and of the practical workcarried out in class, which will be evaluated.

Feb 28th 2020IT HAS BECOME clear in the pastweek that covid-19, the new viral diseasethat struck China at the start of December,will spread around the world. Financial marketshave woken up to that with a jolt; hard lessonsare being learned about China-only supply chains.Health authorities will have to start preparingpeople, even though much about the virus isunknown. The outcomes for health and the world economy depend on whatgovernments choose to do, as China’s response shows—including a draconianquarantine in Hubei province, and high-tech surveillance. Our cover leader (outsideNorth America) argues that China’s experience holds three lessons for othercountries. Talk to the public, and do so early. Take measures to slow the spread ofthe disease, flattening the spike in the epidemic. And prepare health systems forwhat is to come. China has bought other governments time. They should use it.

In public health, honesty is worth a lot more than hope. It has becomeclear in the past week that the new viral disease, covid-19, whichstruck China at the start of December will spread around the world.Many governments have been signalling that they will stop thedisease. Instead, they need to start preparing people for the onslaught(see article).Officials will have to act when they do not have all the facts, becausemuch about the virus is unknown. A broad guess is that 25-70% of thepopulation of any infected country may catch the disease. China’sexperience suggests that, of the cases that are detected, roughly 80%will be mild, 15% will need treatment in hospital and 5% will requireintensive care. Experts say that the virus may be five to ten times aslethal as seasonal flu, which, with a fatality rate of 0.1%, kills 60,000Americans in a bad year. Across the world, the death toll could be inthe millions.

Ministers are looking at “all options” toprevent a coronavirus epidemic in Britain,the health secretary said today as thenumber of diagnosed cases in the UKjumped by a third.Matt Hancock was speaking after healthofficials said twelve more positive cases hadbeen identified, taking the total to 35.Among the new cases, three had been inclose contact with a known case and wereidentified through contact tracing. Six hadrecently returned from Italy and two fromIran. Health officials have yet to trace acause for the twelfth patient, from Essex,who they said had “no relevant travel”. TheEssex patient is the second in the UK to testpositive without having travelled abroadrecently.

Prevention&TreatmentThere is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way toprevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC alwaysrecommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases,including:• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.• Stay home when you are sick.• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning

spray or wipe.• Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.

– CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselvesfrom respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

– Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent thespread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for healthworkers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a healthcare facility).

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to thebathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.– If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least

60% alcohol.
