Facing History Vocabulary:1. Personal Identity-
shapes who you are and what you connect with.
2. Prejudice-
Pre- Judge, to make an assumption based on looks.
3. Discrimination-
-prejudice put into actions
-Can be associated with a group or independent.
4. Stereotype-
a judgment about an individual based on real or imagined characteristics.
5. Tolerance-
Sympathy or indulgence for the beliefs or practices differing from one’s own.

6. Bystander:
Someone who is present at an event,
but does not intervene.
7. Upstander:
Someone who is present at an event and takes a stance
against an injustice.
8. Civil Disobedience
The argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.
9. Universe of Obligation:
the circle of individuals and groups “toward whom obligations are owed, to whom rules apply, and whose injuries call for amends.
10. Eugenicsthe study of or belief in the possibility of
improving the qualities of the human species or a human population, esp. by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics)
11. Anti-Semitism:A prejudice &/or discrimination against Jews. This can be based on religious beliefs, their group membership and sometimes the belief that Jews are a “race.”

accomplishments of the nations, its position of power, the men and institutions and the traditions which are associated with the glorified events of its history.
14. ScapegoatThe action of blaming an individual or group for something when, in reality, there is no one person or group responsible for the problem.

the spreading of ideas and information to further or damage a cause.
16. Kristallnacht
“Night of Broken Glass”
November 9, 1938. Nazi storm troopers launch a violent attack on Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues across Germany. Approximately 100 Jews were murdered this night.

Used to monitor and stamp out any political opposition to the Hitler regime. Led by Heinrich Himmler, the Gestapo used brutal and far-reaching tactics to eliminate Jews, Marxists and even moderate critics to the regime.
