    Positive Survey Results

I sent a survey out to the faculty and staff at Burnett, and I received 13responses. You can view the survey by clicking on the following link:

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GP6PJ9R

After analyzing the survey results, I found these

positive aspects of our current facility:I feel that the teacher resources are easy toaccess. My experience has been great. The staff is always

willing to help.We have an abundance of resources. However, welack the time to go through them.I appreciate that there is always someone there tooffer assistance.

    Negative Survey Results

After analyzing the survey results from the faculty, Ifound these negative aspects of our current facility:

Yes, I love the windows that face the trees. However Ihave seen some libraries where they have tents, inflatable

pools, couches and arm chairs...places to cozy up with abook!I think it could be more child friendly. It appears to bemissing that "little kiddie" feeling. It lacks thatelementary feel.

Reading area could be placed in more isolated location. The tables need to be in the back. If someone is workingor studying in the library they wont be disturbed.I think it is a little difficult for my students to findbooks. Many of them don't know how to find resources. They don't understand how to look books up.

    Negative Survey Results

When asked If you could change one thing about our currentschool library, what would it be?, our faculty said:

Pictures and names of types of books along with the decimalsystem.Eliminate the encyclopedia section. Encyclopedias are a greatidea that have become a thing of the past. Most of ours areoutdated. I would use the TV station to have a teacher do a 10minute daily read aloud but not finish the book. I think thatwould get more students interested in chapter books.Student workers from older grades (i was one in 5th grade) -great incentive!

If I am sitting at the computer to check books in and out Ican't see the students who are in the chapter book sectionbecause of the way the shelves are lined up. I would change thedirection of the shelves.

Problem: Reading area is located in the entrance of the facility. My Solution:

I would move the newcomfy reading area to the

back corner of the library. This will take some of thenoise that you can hearfrom the lunchroom andhallway. Students will be

able to relax and focus onwhat they are reading.

Also, having the readingarea in the back will create

    a cozy, and secureenvironment.

Problem: There is not a quiet place for students to research andstudy.

    My Solution:

Move the teacher resourceroom into the storage room,

and make that room a studentresearch room. Since theteacher resource room has

windows and is locateddirectly beside the circulationdesk, students could be easily

monitored while researching. This could clear out some ofthe clutter from the mediacenter. This will also move

some of the shelves that arecurrently blocking visibility

    from the circulation desk.

Problem: The circulation desk is cluttered, and the book return isnot being utilized.

    My Solution:

Since there are teacher resourceslocated behind the circulation desk,

which causes this area to becomecluttered, I would like to add these tothe teacher resource room. This wouldallow there to be more shelving spacefor items that the media specialistsneed to use on a regular basis. This

would also clear things off of thecirculation desk. Also, I would clean outand utilize the book return. Now booksare placed on the actual desk top or ona rolling cart until they are re-shelved.

Problem: Teacher resources are located in several differentlocations and are difficult to gather.

    My Solution:

Now that the teacher resourceroom has been moved to the

storage room, I would place adivider in the corner of theroom for storage space.

Currently this is a wastedspace. Tall shelves would allowfor all teacher resources to be

located in one area. Alsosupplies and materials would bein this area to create a teacherworkspace. I want this to be a

place of collaboration. Anexciting place for teachers to

    visit.

Problem: Visibility is blocked to part of the library due to shelving. My Solution:

Current view from circulation deskBy moving the referencematerials to the student

    research room, the

    scattered teacherresources to their new

space, and relocating thereading area to the back

corner of the media center, leftover shelves can be

CirculationItems that need to be available on a daily basis have more time limitedcirculation periods, so they are available throughout the day. Theseoften include reference books, current magazines, and someaudio/visual materials. Some media centers limit the number of materials checked out. Theage of the student and the size of the collection can influence theselimits.Limits on checked out materials on a particular subject area, to preventone student from checking out all books on a subject.Teachers may request that the media center limit checkouts on aparticular subject area so as to make all resources available to allclasses.

Teachers typically have longer circulation periods than students.

Each individual school will determine check out procedures for studentsand teachers. Determining factors may include:

Age of the student checking out booksTeachers presence during checkout

    In Conclusion

At Burnett Elementary School we are not usingthe space of the current facility wisely. There

are a lot of spaces that are not being used,

while other spaces are overcrowded andcluttered. By changing one thing, in this casemoving the teacher resources into the storageroom, you can open up a world of possibilities.

We have to do the best with the space

    provided, and being a 21st

century mediaspecialist we need to learn ways to maximizethat space. I hope that changes can be

implemented to give the students and faculty afun and effective learning environment.
