My beloved readers, I have been looking forward to connect with you in this 2019. It has been a fruitful and blessed year for Ashleigh Ivory, as we have Singapore Airlines carrying our anti-ageing solutions and go truly international via the recent BeautyWorld Middle East show.

This year we unveil our new brand narrative and mission, to make mothers look like our sisters once again. Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and while taking a moment to reflect on my mother’s consistent love for me growing up, I could think of no better reward than to help her reverse the toil that age has taken upon her body. Thus the inspiration for our new campaign, “Look like Sisters again”, was born.

It’s been a productive year so far, and there is so much more than I can share in the breath of a letter. But allow me to share a secret, right now we are gearing up for a major move as our team has expanded beyond our initial space. We will be relocating to new premises soon to house Ashleigh Ivory’s bigger team. I look forward to sharing with you, and even meeting some of you, in our upcoming office warming party.

Holding numerous notable certificates in Makeup Artistry and Hairstyling, Shradha Agarwal remains as one of the most sought after freelance makeup artists in Singapore. From celebrity bridals to international fashion shows, the makeup artist is no stranger to all the glitz and glams of life. But back at home, Shradha is but a humble, and loving mother to her two children. We interviewed Shradha about her life, her career, brides, and the future of the makeup industry.

FACETS: How did you start off your career as a makeup artist?

SHRADHA: The first crash course I took up was by a Bollywood celebrity makeup artist in 2005 at Kolkata, India. During my initial interaction with makeup, I wasn’t sure if it was the right career path for me. I was not too convinced that it would provide me with a stable income. However, I continued to explore further, and it wasn’t until later that I took up a full-fledged diploma in 2009.

FACETS: What made you stand out from your peers?

SHRADHA: Hmm, it has to be my versatility. Besides my expertise in makeup, I has my hairstyling abilities on the side. The bonus skillset has definitely come in handy in photo shoots. At the same time, I take full pride in my unique sets of makeup ‘tools’ that do not conform to normative brushes. I started with the traditional airbrush makeup, and subsequently upgraded it to the wireless airbrush device.

FACETS: Can you explain airbrush makeup?

SHRADHA: I use TEMPTU Air. It is the first cordless airbrush makeup device that provides instant, effortless skin perfection. The patented technology delivers less makeup, and more complete coverage than mainstream makeup brush application. Think of it as a spray can bottle but with lesser output - and instead of paint, the sprayed content is filled with foundation, blush etc. The airbrush holds cartridges of different colours, and can be replaced easily. For me, it has definitely made applying makeup on both my clients and myself more efficiently.

FACETS: What influences your work? SHRADHA: As an artist, I take inspiration from everything around me. Having started from collaborative platforms of fashion projects, I have definitely come to love the editorial makeup style. It helps to keep my creativity game up as I experiment further with bolder colours and aesthetics.

FACETS: There has been constant talk revolving around makeup not having enough shades for women. What’s your stand?

SHRADHA: Personally, I’ve had minimal issue with finding the right shade for me but I do understand the societal concerns. I fall in a medium to tan shade category, and sometimes there are brands that do not cater to me. However, I feel that though we can easily condemn brands for the lack of shades for women of colour, we should also focus on showcasing brands that have made it right for us. There are so many good (indie) brands around that needed the spotlight.

FACETS: Do you have any personal future outlook on makeup?

SHRADHA: I feel that the new generation is finally realising the worth of healthy skincare, and have been extremely vocal about it. This pushes the manufacturers to listen to their consumers and provide them with what they need. This makes me so happy as I’ve always believed in chemical-free makeup products that are not detrimental in any way to the skin. I just can’t wait to see what’s for makeup in the upcoming years!

FACETS: What is it like working with brides?

SHRADHA: It is definitely different from all the glams of working with models. Sometimes, I have bookings as early as a year before the big day. The coordination and service expected is premium – from discussing the looks, inspiration, fixing a makeup trial, a re-trial with the chosen dress, etc. It can be a challenge sometimes (schedule and makeup wise), but striking the right balance works best for me. I work around the chosen bridal dress and accessories so that the overall look is cohesive. It is also my biggest pleasure to be able to partake in such a grand and heartwarming journey for all my brides – and sometimes, I get flashbacks of my own wedding jitters.

FACETS: Having used Ashleigh Ivory’s Black Diamond Beauty Roller for a while now, what do you think of it?

SHRADHA: As a freelance makeup artist, I am always tied up with various job calls and duties. Sometimes, they often bleed into my personal timings and I find it tough to balance or find time to have proper skincare pampering. Content Writer Out of the incessant quarrels to the throwback baby pictures that stood well against time, nothing makes a ‘home’ than the instinct that makes one go home. It is a phenomenon that I personally cannot explain (maybe the correct term is nesting?), but one can always tell when they face the doorsteps of their house. It could be the warmth from the wrinkled smiles, or the aura of strictness from military upbringing - but there’s always one that resonates, one that you long for and the one that make you feel ‘home’ again.

Administrative and Business Development Manager Many would have felt that home is a weight that burdens one from achieving his/her own personal goals in life. But for me, home is a fundamental grounding that propels my advancement in life. It extends far out from just family and relatives - but to neighbours and friends as well. Call me traditional or just having my mother’s intuition (I’m not a mother yet!) but for me, nothing makes a home than the motivational spur of wanting to provide for the ones that have always been there for me.

Graphic Designer I have always been an oddball – and what makes it a home, is my everyday escape to geek out in my man cave and live “in my own world”. I’ve always imagined my room to be filled with the tall Monstera Deliciosa Variegata a.k.a Thai constellation plant (soon, I’ll get my plants!) – green, tall and lots of shelter. It’s nothing much to others really; perhaps a hippier room with lots of shade. But it’s the exact safe routine at my most well adapted environment that kept me satisfied. To me, a home is a natural habitat – when you are just being you kept outside the line of sight.

Digital Marketing Executive Contrast is what I see and feel between what is a home and what is not a home. What is ‘not a home’ is a place that is colder, cutthroat, and is often filled with obstacles that I have to constantly cross to prove myself, and the individuals in that belonging. ‘Home’ is place that has allows oneself to develop an ability of transparency; be able to see flaws, weakness, and strength; and still be accepting of who I am. After all, ‘a home is more than just the four walls you see.” (drops mic)
