Facebook Subscriptions- an introduction

• It is an interesting feature to allow people to “follow” non-friend people.

• Maintains a level of safety for people being followed and gives the followers a sense of association with celebrities and famous people whom they would otherwise not have interacted with.

• Gives the people being followed a new avenue to express themselves and take their ideas to the followers.

Facebook Subscriptions-Why?

• Facebook wanted to incorporate the “follow” feature because of its popularity of Twitter.

• Facebook was also looking for a way to counter the “circle” concept of Google + because it was a real threat to the way FB functioned.

• In short, the FB subscription functionality alongwith the tickr updates has changed the dynamics of Facebooking and it has far reaching consequences on the way both promoters promote their Facebook Page and increase visibility.

Now FB has renamed subscriptions as Follow. Anyone having FB account can follow any one who

permits following. One by default follows their friends. One can limit the content which he wants to follow.

FB has taken care of privacy. One can decide whether he wants to be followed or

not. By turning on the follower option, the FB experience

do not change. It seems that FB has been influenced by twitter in this

regard.

The person with the profile has option to allow the subscribers to comment on the posts, videos etc

Even the subscribers can subscribe only to a particular update say a video, status update etc.

The subscribe button allows people get access to the posts, video etc of a profile

People with mass appeal having more than 5000 friends and still want to keep in touch with people through their thoughts through posts etc

On-line publishers and content creators, who would like only certain content, with out unrelated content to be reached to their network of friends and contacts, this is form of brand building exercise.

The kind of people the subscribe button is useful too.

Problem Statement• Initially Facebook followed a guarded approach.

To follow someone, one has to be his/her friend first.

• It depended on other person’s acceptance of request.

• It led to a large number of unknown people in the friend list.

Facebook subscriptions is a one way model where one facebook user can follow the other without becoming friends.

Facebook has used the Twitter model. One can see only the public posts of the person whom

one is subscribing and one who is not in the friend list. Facebook has provided a drop down button in the

status box where you can select the privacy settings of your post.

You can make it public or you can make it private to a select group of friends.
