Cantaloupe

I looked up the definition of Cantaloupe in the dictionary. It said “a melon” that was all it had to say. That doesn’t

describe anything about it. It didn’t describe the shape or color. The texture of the sweet pulpy fruit inside with its

many seeds or the smooth feel of the skin. It didn’t say it’s a large round fruit belonging to the gourd family. It

mentioned nothing about the aroma that fills the air once the skin has been pierced. It didn’t say anything about the

Howell Melons. Go think! And there was no picture of me with the caption about how much I love cantaloupe.

At family get together, there would be a pot luck and Ed’s Auntie Grace always brought ONE cantaloupe. She

had two children, Steve and Joyce and she made sure they would have a daily slice of the fruit. It was cut into slices

and the skin was cut away from the meat, making it easier to eat. It could be picked up with one’s fingers or cut up

and eaten with a fork. She didn’t care who else took a slice after all it was a pot luck and the cantaloupe would be on

the table.

When I was young we went on a family vacation to Oklahoma. Dad wanted to see a childhood friend and show us

where he grew up. A friend of the hosts dropped off a large number of cantaloupes. Lizzie (the hostess) had a great

idea. She went to the freezer and got the ice cream out. Cutting the cantaloupes in half, removing the seeds and

filled them with the cold creamy treat. This was dinner that night. I know, I know what your thinking but boy was it

good in the stifling heat that summer day.

When I’m shopping I spy the cantaloupes and I pick the largest one in the display. I look it over real good to

make sure there aren’t any soft spots… meaning it’s over ripe. When I find the right one, it will be firm and my

hand seems to know this is the one. I have every intention of taking it home and cutting it into slices, removing the

outer skin and cube the fruit to serve as soon as possible. While cubing the fruit it is one for the bowl and one for

Pat. Remember I love cantaloupe.

But… that is not always the case. When the cantaloupe is brought home and is removed from the bag Ed’s eyes

roll up as if he is praying to God. “Oh No, here we go again”. Are “we going to eat this or watch a science experi-

ment AGAIN”?

Makes me dig my heals in to defend myself, my intentions are good. Now he is sitting there at the end of the

table, he could start working on the slicing and dicing while I’m putting the groceries away. But it gets set on the

other end of the table and is forgotten.

I went to Chicago for the week end with my cousin Nettie to attend a family event. Ed dropped me off at Nettie’s.

On his entry into the house, saying out loud “what’ssss that smell”? He sess a large mushy mass of cantaloupe on

the table. It had sat there so long it exploded. I kept telling him I would cut it up to serve it but never happened and

it passed it’s prime and then some.

So from then on the cantaloupe is set on Ed’s end of the table to be cut but not always. Sometimes and again it turns

into a science experiment. I love cantaloupe and am still amazed my picture is not in the dictionary.

Nancy’s Notes...

Spring Greetings, ~In March we had the last of our many “closed for snow days” and are now finally seeing signs of spring! The Irish theme was conveyed in our “Armchair Travel to Ireland” and con-tinued at the St. Pat’s Party. Thank you to volunteers who help make these events so nice! ~On page 5 there is a message about the annual meeting for the Milford Senior Center, Inc. Some of you may not be aware of the opportunity to participate in the annual election of officers for the board. So all members who have their dues paid by the end of April can attend the meeting and vote in May. After the business meeting there will be free pizza!!

~Following is a quote from an article on the “Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease”. Spending time

with others provides high-level brain stimulation. Many areas of our brains come into play when we're talking to others, sharing

information or cooperating on a task. Loneliness is very stressful for our highly social species. Maintaining strong social networks

has been linked to slower cognitive decline. Make an extra effort to nurture longtime relationships, while continuing to develop

new ones. (April 2018 issue of the Caring Right at Home online newsletter) Coming to the senior center could provide the social interaction you may need!! ~I was asked to remind people to bring in puzzles to share with others, then they bring them back after they’re done with the puzzle for someone else to enjoy and return, etc.

Please read all of the newsletter because we have other great things planned for you!

Fondly, Nancy
