Follow and be Followed!

Follow users who are known to you or who represent a business interest etc. Every user can follow 2000 people total. Twitter is different from Facebook; whereas on Facebook when you accept a Friend Request they appear in your network and they appear in yours. On Twitter ‘Following’ does not create a mutual relationship.

Connect with others

• Tweets may be directly about your business - DIRECT CONTENT - for example, special offers, new products available or trade shows you’re exhibiting at, or

• interesting news from your sector that your Followers may not have heard already. News and interesting articles can be Tweeted from third party websites using the Twitter sign often seen alongside articles. This is describes as using THIRD PARTY CONTENT.

• Mention others to encourage a ‘Conversation’. Mention others by using the @ followed directly by their user name; when others do this (mention you) the Tweet will appear in your Notifications.

• Reply to Tweets. Click the Reply button on the Tweet you would like to respond to; this will throw up a Tweet box starting with the username of the Twitter account which posted the original Tweet.

• Favourite a Tweet. Favourite a Tweet and it shows the User that you like what they have written/Tweeted. If you are a brand, ‘Favourite’….ing a Tweet acknowledges a User that mentions you rather than responding to each Tweet.

• Retweet others Tweets. Share others Tweets by clicking the Retweet button. These will retain their original attribution and the User will be notified that ther Tweet has been Retweeted.

Hashtags

People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.

Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

Your promotions

Consider Twitter only discount offers and tease it with posts a few days in advance. When promoting a sale or discount, if you want to reach maximum engagement, be sure to do the following:

Tease the sale in advance to raise interest.Respond to followers to keep the conversation going.Don’t forget to carry on tweeting during the campaign to keep up the momentum.

Become a Twitter Professional

Search Twitter is found on the top right hand side of the screen. Many people are confused about how to use the Twitter search and SEARCH OPERATORS. • When using Twitter, you can simply use the Search panel

to look for hashtags, companies or users, however, advanced search operators let you include and exclude key information.

• You can enter advanced search operators manually alongside your keywords in the Twitter search bar.

Competitor Research

Twitter can be used as a research and marketing tool and this can be done by tracking mentions with username queries. This is done using the to:, and from: operators.

The to: operator shows you Tweets sent to the user, e.g. to:BIGCumbria will show you all the tweets sent to the user BIGCumbria. The from: operator will show you all the tweets sent from the user. You can use the username query to find out what customers think about a competitors service and/or product. Use the information to tweet their customers.

Twitter lists are a useful way to filter information. They enable you to group people together based on their industry, characteristics or interests. Creating and sharing lists positions you as an authority in your field and will grow your Twitter community as people trust the information curated by you.

• To Follow other Users Lists just click on Lists when viewing their profile and select which list you wish to subscribe to, and click Subscribe.

N.B: You can follow lists without following the individual members in that list.
