Beyond the superficial account of likeness, this exhibition contrasts idealised formal portraits with a range of naturalistic, satirical and psychological studies of character. Many are honest, uncompromising investigations of personality while other works harness this pervasive genre as a foundation for creative experiments, explorations of self and parody. Face Value includes artworks drawn from the City of Fremantle Art Collection’s key holdings of painting, print and photography. The exhibition also showcases a number of images of women by women, including self-portraits. The City of Fremantle Art Collection comprises over 1400 works and is the largest municipal art collection in Western Australia. The Collection’s focus on Australian prints and works by Fremantle artists and subjects reflects the historical and enduring importance of the visual arts to Fremantle.
