Facetorrent is a product that combines the personal information of facebook with the instant and illegal downloading capabilities of Bit Torrent. The idea behind the product was to be able to download someone’s personal information anywhere, without knowing their name or anything about them. It is a product that can give you access to information to people you are interested in and/or afraid of. The product pushes ethical boundaries in a couple ways: first it is an invasion of privacy. It gives anyone instant access to your personal information (height, weight, age, eye color, relationship status) Second, the installation of this product was situated so that a sort of ethical social experiment could take place. Once the user has decided who to scan, the projector displays the information on their table, but the other tables in the area display the scanner’s information and cross reference that information with that of the person they were trying to scan to exploit the differences between the two. The scanner is unaware that their information has been shared with everyone around them including who they are interested in scanning, whether that be positive or negative. The scanned person is unaware that the scanner did in fact get access to their information. The voyeur gets to see the whole thing transpire and observe the social interactions it creates. When the product is not being used it displays averages in differences between scanners and scannees that happened throughout that night as a way to showcase who is interested in who.
