Welcome to Facades+ Miami!

Since the inaugural event in New York City in 2012, the Facades+ series has cemented its reputation as the premier conference on high-performance building envelopes. We are delighted to be bringing the conversation about facade design and fabrication to South Florida for the very first time.

Miami is the perfect place to talk about facades. The local AEC industry is booming, with dozens of projects under construction and nearly 100 more in pre-construction. Moreover, because of South Florida’s hot, humid weather and its vulnerability to hurricanes and symptoms of climate change including rising sea levels, the area’s academics, policymakers, architects, and build-ers have become experts on some of the toughest challenges that envelope designers and fabricators are likely to face.

Expect a day of stimulating commentary and discussion on contemporary issues ranging from grappling with climate change to interacting with the local regulatory structure, all grounded in real-world examples. MICHEL ROJKIND | ROJKIND ARQUITECTOS | FOUNDING PARTNER

Rojkind was born in Mexico City, where he studied architecture and urban planning at the Universidad Iberoamericana.

In 2002, he founded Rojkind Arquitectos to explore new challenges addressing contemporary society— to design

compelling experiences that go beyond mere functionality and to connect the intricacies of each project at a deeper

level. For the last decade, he has built award-winning designs around the world and is responsible for some of the more

notable architecture built in Mexico City. His innovative design and production methods have garnered international recognition, particularly for

projects like Nestlé’s Chocolate Museum and the reimagined Cineteca Nacional.

CHAD OPPENHEIM | OPPENHEIM ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN | PRINCIPAL

Oppenheim is a Miami-based architect whose work encompasses all realms of design, including large-scale urban

architecture, hotels, resorts, luxury homes, and interiors and furnishings. Founded in 1999, OAD is an architecture,

interior design, and planning firm based in Miami with offices in New York and Basel, Switzerland. OAD’s socially and

environmentally conscious projects span 25 countries, and are crafted to establish the perfect balance between artistry and

economics. Oppenheim is the recipient of over 60 academic and career distinctions, including 45 AIA Awards.

ANTHONY E BIRCHLER | ZAHNER | VICE PRESIDENT ENGINEERING/SALES

Birchler leads the design-engineering team at Zahner. Since 1998, he has been responsible for designing many of Zahner’s

patented systems which are now used to complete bold architecture all over the world. Birchler shared responsibility for

developing two out of the five patents held by Zahner, including ZEPPS® Technology, the company’s dual-curvature building

system, which has been used to make several complex buildings. Birchler works directly with owners, engineers, architects,

and general contractors, providing intelligent problem-solving for the production of complex facades.

XIMENA CAMINOS | FAENA GROUP | EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR/PARTNER

Under Caminos’ leadership, Faena Group has made art and culture the foundation of all its endeavors, successfully bridging

culture, community-building, and urban development. She has spearheaded the creation of new institutional models that

foster the exploration of ideas across the fields of arts, sciences, philosophy, technology, politics, and urbanism. As one

of the first independent curators in South America, she rethought the role of the contemporary art exhibition through

engagement with young artists. Caminos serves as the Executive Director of Faena Forum Miami Beach and Faena Art Center Buenos Aires.

Darling is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper, now celebrating its 11th year. The AN media company consists

of four print publications covering architecture and design news. As AN’s publisher, She won the AIA National Collaboration

Award, Grassroots Preservation Award, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. Darling began her publishing career as Director of

print production for The Gap’s European markets. She holds a BS from The University of Texas at Austin.

VINCENT J. DESIMONE | DESIMONE CONSULTING ENGINEERS | FOUNDER/CHAIRMAN

DeSimone is noted for his solutions to special structural problems and is an innovative practitioner who emphasizes

optimization and efficiency. DeSimone received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College and

was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. for his 50 years of engineering contributions. In addition to his significant professional

accomplishments, award-winning work, and spearheading the firm’s international presence, he continues to serve as an

industry leader. Currently, DeSimone is working on Miami World Center, a 14-million-square-foot, mixed-use project, Grove at Grand Bay, One

Thousand Museum Tower, and Panorama Tower.

ANDREW FREY | TECELA | PRINCIPAL

Andrew Frey is a real estate development and urban design professional with more than a decade of experience. He is a

developer, zoning lawyer, educator, advocate, and winner of the ULI Southeast Florida Young Leader of the Year award.

Prior to Tecela, he developed more than 1,000 market-rate rental units at CC Residential, and obtained local government

approvals for more than 2.5 million square feet of development at Akerman and Gunster. His volunteer activities include

serving as a board member of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (Tri-Rail), executive director of Townhouse Center, and

former executive director of DawnTown, for which he won the Knight Arts Challenge.

BERNARDO FORT-BRESCIA | ARQUITECTONICA | FOUNDER

Fort-Brescia was born in Lima, Peru, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University, and a Masters in

Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He and his wife, Laurinda Spear, are founders

of Arquitectonica. The award-winning firm, which is based in Miami, has over 700 architects in ten offices around the

world and projects in 54 countries. Fort-Brescia is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a recipient of the

AIA’s Silver Medal.

GREG GALLOWAY | YKK-AP | PROTEK® BRAND MANAGER

Galloway is ProTek® Brand Manager for YKK AP America Inc. He started his career in manufacturing and was an ASQ

Certified Quality Engineer before transitioning into marketing. His background includes 28 years in residential and

commercial facades with accomplishments in strategic business planning, and brand management. Galloway’s forte is

the ability to understand complex, technical issues and translate them into layman’s terms. For the last 14 years, he has

been active in the design, building, and marketing of hurricane impact and blast mitigation products. Mr. Galloway holds a B.S. degree from

Southern Illinois University and an M.B.A. from Drake University.

RENÉ GONZALEZ | RENÉ GONZALEZ ARCHITECT | PRINCIPAL

Gonzalez believes that architecture should be a sensory experience. His work is based on the idea that buildings and

spaces impact us and should be designed to leave a lasting memorable impression. He has received a number of

prestigious awards including two National American Institute of Architecture Design Awards (2011, 2006). His firm has

ALASTAIR GORDON | ARCHITECTURE CRITIC AND AUTHOR

Gordon is an award-winning critic and author who has written regularly about the built environment for many publications

including the New York Times, the New York Observer, Vanity Fair, and the Wall Street Journal. He has published several

critically acclaimed books including Naked Airport, Romantic Modernist, and Wandering Forms. Gordon is currently a

Distinguished Fellow at the Miami Beach Urban Studios (FIU) and architecture critic for the Miami Herald. In the coming

academic year, he will be teaching critical writing at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

CHERYL H. JACOBS | AIA MIAMI + MCAD | EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Jacobs guides both organizations in the development and implementation of programming that promotes architecture,

design, and the built environment. She works closely with these organizations’ volunteer boards to create forums, seminars

and events that improve awareness of the industry to build strong community and member connectivity. With 20+ years

in association and non-profit leadership experience, she is a strong and inspirational leader with a talent for recruiting and

motivating volunteers, and a passion for the creative industries. In 2013, she was awarded the AIA Florida Presidential Award.

RODOLPHE EL-KHOURY | UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE | DEAN

El-Khoury is Dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture. Before coming to UMSoA in July, 2014, he was Canada

Research Chair and Director of Urban Design at the University of Toronto, Head of Architecture at California College of the

Arts, and Associate Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. El-Khoury’s current research in architecture focuses on

applications for information technology, aiming for enhanced responsiveness and sustainability in buildings and smart cities.

As a partner in Khoury Levit Fong (KLF), his award-winning projects include Beirut Martyr’s Square, Stratford Market Square, and the Shenzhen

Museum of Contemporary Art.

NICO KIENZL | ATELIER TEN | DIRECTOR

As an expert and leader in energy and building performance, Kienzl consults for a wide variety of projects around the

world. He has experience in advanced building analysis including facade and building system optimization, and daylight

and shading analysis. A LEED Fellow, Kienzl holds an M.S. in Building Technology from MIT, and a Doctorate of Design

from Harvard University.

CHRISTOPHER LÉPINE | ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS | SENIOR ASSOCIATE

A member of ZHA since 2006, Lépine has led many large-scale international projects and is also a member of the Senior

Management Team within the office. Prior to his role, Lépine was an Associate at Foster and Partners. His interest in

the relationship between architectural form and drawing techniques, especially the use of advanced digital technology to

resolve complex design challenges, has led to several awards and lectures presented at the Architectural Association and

software conferences. Lépine is currently Project Director for the One Thousand Museum in Miami, ZHA’s first tower in the Americas. He is

also directing Collins Park Place, also in Miami, among other international projects.

DAVID MARTIN | TERRA GROUP | PRESIDENT/OWNER

Martin leads some of Miami’s most impactful real estate developments, with an emphasis on neighborhoods like Coconut

Grove, Miami Beach, Doral, and Weston—including the Grove at Grand Bay designed by Bjarke Ingels and Park Grove

designed by the Rem Koolhaas. Terra’s newest project in North Beach is a 69-unit beachfront condo designed by Renzo

Piano. Terra is also developing the Modern and Neovita communities in Doral, as well as Botaniko in Weston, a 121-acre

project with homes designed by Chad Oppenheim and Roney Mateu. With a unique interest in education, the arts and health foundations, Martin

is actively involved in South Florida’s civic and business communities.

CHRISTOS MARCOPOULOS | STUDIO NMINUSONE (N-1) | CO-FOUNDER/PARTNER

Marcopoulos is an architect and lecturer at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo and has extensive

professional working experience in the offices of OMA in Rotterdam and SOM in San Francisco. His technical expertise

has been instrumental at his firm, which was selected by the New York Architectural League for the 2012 Emerging

Voices lecture series. He is co-founder of the Responsive Architecture and Design Lab (RAD Lab) at the University of

Toronto, which provides resources and expertise for project-based research on the architectural ramifications of embedded technology and

ubiquitous computing.

In 2008, Menking was U.S. Commissioner of Into the Open: Positioning Practice at The Venice Biennale. He has curated

and written catalogues for exhibitions including; Archigram: Experimental Architecture 1961-1974, Superstudio: Life Without

Objects, and The Vienna Model: Housing for the 21st Century. He co-authored Four Conversations on the Architecture

Of Discourse and Architecture on Display and his essay Mr. Mumford’s Neighborhood appears in the book Forty Ways To

Think About Architecture (Routledge). His writings have appeared in The Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of Architectural Education,

Monocle, Perspecta etc. He was Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley (2011) and Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute.

MARYLIS NEPOMECHIE | FIU COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE | PROFESSOR OF ARCHITECTURE

Nepomechie is an architect and professor of architecture at Florida International University, as well as National President

of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Her professional and academic projects—focused on urban

resilience and the design of sustainable, affordable housing, and infrastructure—are included in the archives of the

National Building Museum, and have been honored with over 40 design and research awards, national and international

exhibition, and wide publication. Her current research, funded by the National Science Foundation and Cejas Family Foundation, is focused on

the effects of sea level rise in Miami.

ENRIQUE NORTEN | TEN ARQUITECTOS | DIRECTOR/FOUNDER

Norten was born in Mexico City where he studied architecture at Iberoamericana University. He also holds a Masters

in Architecture from Cornell University. In 1986, he founded TEN Arquitectos and in 2003 opened a second office in

New York. The firm has grown to more than 70 members, working on a diverse array of award-winning and acclaimed

architectural projects. He is the recipient of many awards including the Mies van der Rohe Prize of Latin American

Architecture, the “Legacy Award” from the Smithsonian Institution for his contributions to U.S. arts and culture, and is an Honorary Member

of the American Institute of Architects.

MARGI NOTHARD | GLAVOVIC STUDIO | PRESIDENT & DESIGN DIRECTOR

Nothard founded Glavovic Studio as a creative design company for architecture, public art, and urban design in 1999.

Glavovic Studio is a leader in South Florida’s architecture of cultural facilities, affordable housing, and public space. Nothard

and her studio have designed over seventy-five projects and are committed to long-term environmental stewardship. The

studio’s varied projects integrate landscape, environment, architecture, culture, and urban connections in a unified spatial

and transformational experience.

ALEXANDER PEREZ | GATE PRECAST | SOUTH FLORIDA SALES AND MARKETING

Perez handles sales and marketing efforts for Gate Precast in South Florida. He is an architectural and construction project

manager with over 18 years of experience overseeing all phases of projects in the private and public sectors. Most recently,

he served as Director of BIM Technology at Zyscovich Architects. He has managed multiple projects under construction in

various cities throughout Florida and has a track record, and proven history of on-time, on-budget and high-quality project

completion. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor, for the School of Architecture and Construction at Miami Dade College.

CARLOS PRIO-TOUZET | TOUZET STUDIO | FOUNDING PRINCIPAL

Before opening Touzet Studio in 2004, Prio-Touzet served as a senior designer and vice-president for firms such as

Arquitectonica and Spillis Candela. He has designed award-winning buildings in Europe, Asia, and the United States. He

has served as a visiting critic, lecturer, and instructor at Florida International University. Prio-Touzet received a Bachelor of

Arts from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami.

CARLOS ROSSO | THE RELATED GROUP | PRESIDENT, CONDOMINIUM DIVISION

Since joining The Related Group in 2002, Rosso has directed all aspects of residential development both in various

properties throughout Florida and internationally in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay. Throughout his career,

Rosso has developed more than 16,000 units, honing his experience in construction, project financing, land acquisition,

and sales and marketing. His broad experience in real estate includes having worked as Vice President of Real Estate

Development for Investment Properties in Boston and 10 years as Project Director for Besix International, overseeing the development and

construction of over 10-million square feet of multi-family, hotel, and office buildings in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

MARC SARNOFF | CITY OF MIAMI | COMMISSIONER

Commissioner Sarnoff represents District 2 in the City of Miami and proudly serves on the City of Miami Commission,

and as the Chairman of the Miami Downtown Development Authority and the OMNI Community Redevelopment Agency.

After graduating with honors from the University of Tampa with a Bachelor’s in Criminology, Sarnoff chose to attend

the Loyola University School of Law after respectfully declining an offer to become a law enforcement officer for the

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Afterwards, he continued his education through Tulane University’s L.L.M. program in admiralty law.

ALLAN SHULMAN | SHULMAN + ASSOCIATES | FOUNDING PRINCIPAL

Shulman founded Miami-based Shulman + Associates in 1996. His firm is committed to the creation of site-specific

designs based on multidisciplinary research, the exploration of ideas, and the fostering of strong relationships. The firm’s

work is widely published and has been honored with more than 70 design awards. Shulman is also an author, editor,

lecturer, curator, and associate professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture.

Stuart, Executive Director of the Miami Beach Urban Studios and tenured professor in architecture, is a practicing

registered architect in Florida. He is an architectural historian and a visual artist involved in collaborative research projects

with funding from the Van Alen Institute, the National Endowment for the Arts, and other organizations. Stuart’s books

include: The Gray Cloth, Paul Scheerbart’s Novel on Glass Architecture, and The New Deal in South Florida: Design, Policy and Community

Building, 1933-1940 (w/ John F. Stack, Jr.). He has lectured and taught widely in the US on architecture, urbanism, technology, and identity,

and is working on projects that point to new directions in interdisciplinary innovation and research.

MARCIA TOBIN | AECOM | PRINCIPAL, DESIGN, PLANNING + ECONOMICS

Tobin is a planner with over 20 years of experience, focused on creating integrated multi-disciplinary approaches and

solutions to complex planning and environmental issues. She’s led project teams requiring coordination of multiple

disciplines and stakeholder interests to develop and direct feasible solutions, while maintaining the transparency of

decision-making analyses and processes. Tobin’s project portfolio includes climate resiliency planning, water resources

planning, master planning and site opportunity and constraints analyses, environmental impact review with an emphasis on water resources,

and watershed management planning.

Join one of these architectural tours that will give you an insider’s perspective on the latest facades in Downtown Miami, Brickell, Miami Beach and the Design District.

Tour Leader: Allan Shulman (Shulman + Associates)Starting off at the Museum District’s Pérez Museum, the Miami Grows Up tour spotlights the ever-changing face

of Downtown Miami and the Brickell corridor, including the new Frost Science Museum and recently completed

high-rise office and residential buildings. Architects, engineers, and fabricators with first-hand knowledge will be on

hand at many of the sites. Additional site visits and lunch location to be determined.

Tour Leader: Alastair Gordon, Architecture Critic & AuthorThe Beach tour, kicking off from the Pérez, includes The Faena District, encompassing several new properties as

well as retrofitted classic Miami Beach resorts and Lincoln Road retail. The tour heads over the Bay to end at the

Design District, featuring the new Iwamoto/Scott Zahner-fabricated garage and other high-design retail facades.

Project designers and fabricators will share their experience and insights at many of the sites. Additional site visits

and lunch location to be determined.
