Stud masters are reviewing service
fees and delaying the release of their
2020 rosters due to the uncertainty
caused by COVID-19, but a number
of breeders believe that a correction in the
marketplace will be forced upon those standing
stallions after a significant upward trend in
recent years.
April for thoroughbred industry
stakeholders normally signals the all-important
Australian Easter Yearling Sale, while the
Sydney autumn carnival reaches a crescendo
and studs unveil their new stallions and what
prices their respective rosters stand for.
But some of those announcements are likely
to be put on hold as stallion owners assess the
fallout from next week’s Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale and garner the appetite from
breeders to reinvest in mares and willingness to
breed this year. Continued on page 2>>

INGLIS EASTER SALE FEATURE
Walk like an Egyptian... or a Pharoah
“The 37-year wait is over; American Pharoah
is finally the one!”
The breathless call of Larry Collmus will forever
remain the soundtrack to one of racing’s greatest
moments of the modern era: when the Bob
Baffert-trained American Pharoah (Pioneerof
The Nile) strode clear for a dominant success in
the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f), becoming the first
horse in 37 years to win American racing’s holy
grail, the Triple Crown.
It was a moment made more special by the
fact that so many horses since Affirmed (Exclusive
Native) in 1978 had won both of the first two legs
of the Triple Crown. Continued on page 9 >>

Darley Australia has in recent years
been one of the first studs to announce their service fees but head of
sales Alastair Pulford said the Sheikh Mohammed-owned operation had
already started re-evaluating a release date for their diverse stallion roster.
“This needs to be properly thought through. We’re not going to
be going gung-ho into the marketplace, we’re going to be seeing what
evolves over the next few weeks, particularly with the Easter yearling sale
and following that the broodmare sales,” Pulford said.
“We’re not going to be in a hurry, but equally, we are getting feedback
from our clients that they still do want to prepare for the season coming
ahead.
“If there is a positive at the moment, it is that we are planning matings
that occur in September and those foals are going to be born from August
2021 (and sold as yearlings in 2023), so we’re planning on the future,
rather than the immediate.”
He added: “Hopefully the market will have fully recovered by then
(2023) and if the fees do drop a bit this year, then people will be in a great
position to recoup some of the losses that are inevitable in the next three
to six months.”
The most recent economic downturn was the Global Financial Crisis
(GFC) in late 2008 and 2009, which saw Australasian stud masters slash
service fees across the board with few exceptions, and that could again be
the case 11 years later as a result of COVID-19.

Champion stallion Encosta De Lago
(Fairy King) had his fee slashed from $302,500 (inc GST) to $220,000,
Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) went from $330,000 to $198,000 while Flying
Spur (Danehill) and Hussonet (Mr. Prospector) also took significant service
fee hits, predominantly due to the prevailing economic downturn at the time.
Willow Park Stud’s Glenn Burrows believes the number of mares bred in
2020 will fall, continuing a trend that has occurred in Australian breeding in
the past few years, and that a correction of service fees will also be a necessity
given the plunging economy.
He expects the number of stallions at stud will also drop to a figure that is
20 per cent less than six years ago.
“This polarisation is happening all over the world and the well-proven
horses and commercial first season sires will still be very keenly sought after,
but the fees of the second through fourth season sires, and the ones on the
knife edge or worse with runners, will see their fees cut,” Burrows said.
“Successful stallions like I Am Invincible and Exceed And Excel should
be able to stand their ground at the same fees, whilst I suppose a stallion like
Pierro is maybe one that can buck the trend and possibly go up.
“There are several other stallions that are on the cusp and as a
consequence they could maintain their 2019 fees, but across the board the
majority will need to reduce to entice breeders’ support.”
Burrows also suggested the number of individual breeders could also
decline as a result of the coronavirus impact on the economy and “this latest
hiccup won’t help in maintaining or increasing the number”.
“Every cloud has a silver lining, however, and I believe there are terrific
opportunities for buyers of the Easter yearlings as well as for the breeders
down the track,” he said.
“We have such a resilient industry due to our terrific domestic prize-
money together with the global success of our product on the track. I really
believe we will bounce back from the coronavirus very quickly as we certainly
have with setbacks in the past.
“History says by that time we will be well and truly back to normal, so
now’s the time to buy top-end yearlings and broodmares at a discounted rate
that we may not see repeated again for some time.”
Pulford, too, is not as pessimistic as some about the immediate future of
the industry even though he predicted mare numbers may decline slightly
this year.
“I suppose everyone has their own personal circumstances and maybe that
will be the case, but equally, having empty broodmares is not a very worthwhile
proposition,” he said.
“The country needs racehorses and numbers have dropped over the last
few years.
“While that is starting to turn the corner and starting to rise again, and that it
might take a little hit this year, I still believe it will be pretty solid.”
Not unlike rival Darley, Coolmore traditionally uses the lead-up to the Easter
sale to launch their new stallions - The Everest (1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes
(Rubick) being the farm’s high-profile retiree this year - before confirming fees for
the remainder of their roster soon after.
But it is believed that the international operation will delay its announcements
until after the Easter sale is conducted and the resulting ramifications of a
weakened market are understood.
Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) stood for $88,000 (all inc GST) last year
while The Autumn Sun’s (Redoute’s Choice) introductory fee was $77,000 when
retiring to Arrowfield Stud.
Along with Yes Yes Yes, Group 1-winning sprinter Exceedance (Exceed And
Excel) could retire to Vinery Stud while ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
winner Microphone (Exceed And Excel) could also head to the breeding shed in
2020.
Group 1-winning sprinter Pierata (Pierro) will also be retired to Aquis Farm
while Castelvecchio (Dundeel) is slated to retire to Arrowfield Stud after his racing
career is over, but it is yet to be confirmed whether that will be this year or next.
One prominent industry figure said service fees would have to be reduced
this year as a result of the crisis while they also predicted that the number of mares
being bred would also fall.
Other significant investors such as China Horse Club’s Michael Wallace,
whose organisation holds shareholdings in a number of high-profile commercial
stallions including Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) and
Russian Revolution (Snitzel), also flagged the issue of service fees being too high
at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.
“To me, there is a little worry about the cost of service fees. I think we need
to be mindful of that going forward as it has an impact on people buying mares
and we have seen that through the middle part of the market,” Wallace told ANZ
Bloodstock News at the time.
"Every cloud has a silver lining, however, and I
believe there are terrific opportunities for buyers of the Easter yearlings as well as for the breeders down the track"

Waller aims for seventh DoncasterChris Waller is convinced a return to Sydney
racing will help Kolding (Ocean Park) when the
gelding heads a strong team trying to give the
champion trainer a record-equalling seventh
Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick.
Waller expects to have at least six runners in
Saturday's Doncaster on the first day of The
Championships. The four-year-old was fifth in
the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield
before finishing midfield in the $5 million All-
Star Mile (1600m) at the same track on March
14. Hugh Bowman is booked to ride Kolding
with Waller likely to also have Mister Sea Wolf
(Amadeus Wolf) (James McDonald), Kings Will
Dream (Casamento) (Josh Parr), Yulong Prince
(Gimmethegreenlight) (Brenton Avdulla),
Imaging (Oasis Dream) (Kerrin McEvoy) and
exciting import Shared Ambition (Born To Sea)
(Jay Ford). "Kolding has got his share of weight
(56.5kg) but he's going to be back racing right-
handed again which I think is a big plus, and I'll
take the blinkers off him again because I don't
think they worked last start,” Waller said.
Eel confirmed for DerbyBrisbane three-year-old Eric The Eel (Olympic
Glory) has been given the green light to head
to Sydney for the Australian Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) under revised coronavirus protocols
for transporting horses. The Stuart Kendrick-
trained Eric The Eel won at Doomben over
2200 metres on Saturday, reigniting the desire
to get to Sydney, especially with the news the
Queensland winter carnival has been scrapped.
"I plan to have him on the float Monday night
so he should be in Sydney early on Tuesday to
settle in," Kendrick said. "I am hoping he can
stay in my name but if he remains in Sydney
we might need to switch him across to Bjorn's
(Baker) name.”
Castelvecchio to run over 2400 metres
Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner
Castelvecchio (Dundeel) is also set to contest
the Australian Derby with a view to backing up
in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
at Randwick a week later. Now part-owned by
Arrowfield Stud, where he will retire, the Richard
Litt-trained three-year-old colt won his second
Group 1 race last start. Meanwhile, James
McDonald has been booked to ride Japanese
import Danon Premium (Deep Impact) in the
Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 11.
Hyeronimus picks up Sires rideAdam Hyeronimus, who rode his maiden
Group 1 winner on Saturday when Shout The
Bar (Not A Single Doubt) took out the Vinery
Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), will attempt to
double his tally in the Inglis Sires (registered as
ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m). The
Sydney jockey has picked up the mount on the
Robbie Griffiths-trained Glenfiddich (Fastnet
Rock), a last-start winner of the Mornington
Sires (1500m). The juvenile colt, who was bred
and sold by Edinburgh Park, has had seven
starts and earned $137,550 in prize-money so
far.
Irwin first-up for SunlightComeback Group 1-winning mare Sunlight
(Zoustar), whose 2020 campaign was delayed
after a paddock accident, is set to resume in the
RN Irwin Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Morphettville
on April 18. The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-
trained mare won a Strathalbyn barrier trial
last week but she is set to have another public
hit-out before her resumption. “She just slipped
at the start, but she pulled up well and has
been doing really well since,” Calvin McEvoy
told Racing.com. “She will trial again on April
9 before heading to the Irwin Stakes on April
18.” Stablemate and Sunlight’s sibling, Sisstar
(Zoustar), will be spelled after three unplaced
runs this preparation.
Group 1 tilt next for Positive PeaceIn-form mare Positive Peace (Stratum) is likely
to tackle the Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) at Randwick next start after making it
five wins in succession and, more importantly,
landing a breakthrough stakes win in the
Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill
on Saturday. The mare’s dramatic improvement
is not a complete surprise to trainer Bjorn Baker.
“I always thought she had talent although she
ran last at her first two starts and near enough
to last at her third run,” Baker said. “She just
wasn’t strong enough to finish off her races so I
knew when she matured a little more she would
come right. She is just doing everything right
now. She is eating well and is just in the zone.”

Baker delighted with stable’s fortunesThe improvement of Positive Peace also
underlines the growing depth of Sydney
trainer Bjorn Baker’s stable, one the expatriate
Kiwi thought might not have been there only
a matter of months ago. “With Samadoubt out
with injury and Champagne Cuddles being
retired I did think we might be a bit light-on,”
he said. “Horses like Positive Peace, She’s Ideel
and Missybeel have all stepped up to boost us
in the city which is very pleasing. We don’t
have the expensive yearlings and the like that
some of our training rivals have so it is very
satisfying to be able to compete with them.”
Baker is fourth on the NSW metropolitan
trainers’ premiership with 39 victories, trailing
only Chris Waller, James Cummings and Gai
Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
Oaks on cards for Probabeel
The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to see New
Zealand filly Probabeel (Savabeel) continue
her Sydney campaign with a shot at the
Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). The Jamie
Richards-trained three-year-old was runner-
up in Saturday’s Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1,
2000m), which was won by Shout The Bar
(Not A Single Doubt). “She was very brave
on Saturday and went a terrific race on a
track that was a little too wet for her liking,”
Richards said. “I thought Kerrin McEvoy rode
her a treat and had her in the right places at
the right time, but with that slower tempo
early in the race she just couldn’t quite get to
the winner who had had it pretty soft in front.
We had initially thought that Saturday would
be her last run and we would bring her home
and put her in the paddock as we look to the
spring but the way things are at the moment,
we have had to have a rethink on that front.”
Doncaster for Melody Belle
Jamie Richards also has Melody Belle
(Commands) in Sydney after two third
placings in Melbourne to start her summer-
autumn Australian campaign. The star five-
year-old will attempt to win her 11th Group
1 race when she tackles Saturday’s Doncaster
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). “We have Melody Belle
ready to go in the Doncaster at Randwick this
weekend and she has done really well since
moving to Sydney from Melbourne,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to getting her on that
Randwick track as I think it suits her a little
better. And as we are based there she has
gotten into a nice rhythm, which won’t be too
different to what she will encounter on race
day.”
Campaign up in the air for Vow And DeclareDanny O'Brien is unsure what the future
holds for Vow And Declare's (Declaration Of
War) bid for consecutive Melbourne Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) victories. O'Brien was planning to
take Vow And Declare to Brisbane for a three-
run campaign, part of a nine month build-up
to this year's Cup at Flemington in November.
But the multi-million dollar Queensland
winter carnival has been abandoned
because of the coronavirus pandemic with
authorities to keep racing as long as possible
under a reduced prize-money model. Vow
And Declare had a gallop between races at
Bendigo on Saturday under his Cup-winning
jockey Craig Williams, part of the build-up
towards the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1,
2000m) at Randwick on April 11. "Sydney
looks a mile off at the moment and that's two
weeks away," O'Brien told Racing.com. "So,
we're not planning anything further than
taking him home and putting a saddle on
him (this) morning and hopefully we can get
to Sydney. He's improved out of that first-up
run. He's very well at the moment and fingers
crossed we can get up there and that racing's
still going and we can have a good crack at the
Queen Elizabeth."
Swats That a Showdown contenderSwats That (Shamus Award) will be given
her chance in the lucrative The Showdown
(1200m) at Caulfield next month after
her impressive debut win at Bendigo on
Saturday. “She’s pulled up really well, she ate
all but a handful of feed and is very happy
within herself,” co-trainer Troy Corstens told
Racing.com. “She’s sound this morning and
had a nice walk and swim to stretch out. I was
going to tip her out after her trials, but there
was no reason to, she was showing plenty
at home and handled it all really well. With
that being the case and the way she’s come
through yesterday’s run, we’ll now head to
The Showdown at Caulfield and chase the
$1 million on offer. Good fillies have a bit of
crankiness and a bit of ‘look at me’, which is
exactly how she is.”
Adelaide Group 2 goal for SnoggingSaturday’s Bendigo winner Snogging (I
Am Invincible) will head to Adelaide in
an attempt to land a stakes victory before
retiring to stud. Trained by Trent Busuttin
and Natalie Young, the five-year-old mare
was runner-up in last year’s Queen Of The
South Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Morphettville
and will target the same race again after
winning the Gold Bracelet (1400m) first-up
at the weekend. “She went so close last year,
and we know that she handled the travel and
track so it’s a logical option if we’re still able
to head there,” Busuttin told Racing.com.
“We’ll start her in the Gold Distaff at Caulfield
in three weeks and then South Australia will
be her grand final.”

Championships prize-money slashedPrize-money for Sydney's signature autumn
races has been halved in response to racing's
reduced income stream during the coronavirus
crisis. Racing is scheduled to go ahead subject
to government regulations on April 4 and 11
with eight Group 1 races programmed for the
two days of The Championships at Randwick.
The Australian Turf Club and Racing NSW
have agreed to reduce prize-money because
of the challenges presented by a drop in
wagering, which will be significantly reduced
by the current lockdowns of pubs, clubs and
TAB agencies. Other sources of funding for
prize-money, on-course attendances and
sponsorship, have also been severely impacted
given the public is not allowed to attend race
meetings. Racing NSW has a Future Fund to
enable the NSW Racing Industry to continue
in the face of such challenges, but says it is
important to maintain those cash reserves for
as long as possible given the uncertainty of the
situation.
Racing Queensland also alters prize-moneyOfficials believe they have the correct balance
in the prize-money schedule for the new zoned
racing which starts in Queensland this week.
The state has been divided into five regions
while the south east, where most of the horses
are trained, has been split into two divisions.
The move is designed to limit the spread of the
coronavirus as racing continues to operate under
strict biosecurity conditions. As such, Racing
Queensland has revised the prize-money for the
different zones. The central region's Mackay will
have the first meeting under the new regime
tomorrow. RQ will allocate similar prize-money
to Gold Coast and Toowoomba-trained horses as
the Eagle Farm and Caloundra-trained runners.
The Gold Coast meeting will have races worth
$65,000, two at $50,000, two at $35,000 and two
at $27,500, while QTIS bonuses will be paid on
selected races. Eagle Farm will be the same, but
with an additional $65,000 race programmed.
Sunshine Coast has prize-money ranging from
$21,000 to $30,000 as will the Toowoomba
meeting.
Rawiller praises VJABrad Rawiller has heaped praise on the chief
executive of the Victorian Jockeys' Association
(VJA) Matthew Hyland for his tireless work
during the coronavirus pandemic. Rawiller
said without Hyland representing the 170-
plus members of the VJA, there was a strong
possibility racing may have ground to halt. "Matt
Hyland has done an amazing job going through
what he has in the last two weeks. He has stood
up and coped with it all," Rawiller said. "He's
been there for all jockeys. We've been under a
lot of stress with what we're going to be doing in
the next day or two days and Matty has looked
after everyone. At the same time he has had to
make some big calls quickly which has been to
the benefit of the racing industry."

Breeder savours Elleegant’s victory from the couchBreeder Don Goodwin admits he is doing it
tough at the moment but not in a way that most
would think. Goodwin and his wife Christina are
currently in lockdown along with the rest of the
country, which means that they cannot travel to
support their pride and joy Verry Elleegant (Zed)
when she competes. The four-year-old mare, who
is trained by Chris Waller, scored a dominant
victory in the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at
Rosehill on Saturday. “We had been over for her
first two runs in the Apollo and Chipping Norton
and then we got cut short,” Goodwin said. “We are
in isolation like the rest of the country, just trying
to stay in our bubble. I must admit I nearly bloody
jumped out of my bubble watching her win
yesterday (Saturday). Under the circumstances
I’m just grateful we could get the race run and
then to win like that was incredible.”
Richards in lockdownTe Akau Racing trainer Jamie RIchards, like the
rest of New Zealand’s residents, is in lockdown
due to the coronavirus outbreak and he admits
to finding it difficult. “I’m at home here in
Matamata in lockdown with Mum and my
sister Libby and things are pretty different to
what they are normally,” he said. “We’ve got a
couple of horses in the paddocks here which
need feeding and the like but with the rest of
the racing team out spelling there hasn’t been
a hell of a lot to do. I’ve been up and cleaned
the gutters out and done a bit of water blasting
around the place but the new routine is going to
take a bit of getting used to.”
Stanley excited about prospects of Master MontaroNew Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale
graduate Master Montaro (Toronado) could
not have made a more impressive debut when
successful at Pakenham on Friday night for
Cranbourne trainer Richard Laming. Ridden
by Michael Walker, the son of Toronado (High
Chaparral) came from last to amble past his
rivals when winning the Kentucky Equine
Research Maiden Plate (1000m) on debut and
looks to have a bright future. The three-year-
old gelding is part-owned by a group of Kiwis,
which includes Woburn Farm principals Adrian
Stanley and Hannah Kettlety, who retained a
small share in the horse after selling him at the
2018 Ready to Run Sale for $300,000. “We kept
a share in him because we thought he had a lot
of ability. We didn’t really want to sell him, but
we had to,” Stanley said. “They have taken their
time with him and everyone has been happy
with the patient approach which has helped
him mentally and physically.”

17 for Speightstown Mozu Superflare (5 m ex Christies Treasure by
Belong to Me), who finished down the field in last
year’s renewal of the Takamatsunomiya Kinen
(Gr 1, 1200m), gained redemption in the 2020
renewal of the Chukyo feature yesterday, but only
following a dramatic protest after a blanket could
have been thrown over the first four runners
home. Mozu Superflare, a $41 chance, hit the line
together with Kurino Gaudi (Screen Hero), but
stewards immediately reviewed the finish and
possible interference over the final 200 metres.
Following deliberations, Mozu Superflare was
declared the winner by a nose, with Kurino Gaudi
demoted to fourth. Race-favourite Gran Algeria
(Deep Impact) was promoted to second, with
Diatonic (Lord Kanaloa) a further head back in
third. In winning, the Hidetaka Otonashi-trained
Mozu Superflare became the 17th elite-level

Arqana consider breeze-up switch to June due to coronavirus crisisArqana is considering rescheduling its
Deauville breeze-up sale due to the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic from its scheduled
May 8-9 slot to June 2-3 or June 3-4 on the turf
track at Deauville with the sale to take place
the following day. Arqana CEO Eric Hoyeau
said: "In the midst of a crisis that is affecting us
all, we are looking to adapt to the constraints
and offer the best possible conditions for our
vendors and buyers, therefore we have thought
distancing the sale from the general lockdown
and suspension of racing would provide a more
favourable environment. The situation on the
Covid-19 front is still rapidly evolving though,
and we will wait until the end of the lockdown
is officially announced to firm up this schedule.
Aqueduct turned into makeshift hospitalAqueduct racecourse has been turned into
a temporary hospital site to assist those
affected by coronavirus in the New York City
area. "Aqueduct Racetrack will serve as a safe
haven for those recovering from this virus,"
New York Racing Association chief executive
Dave O'Rourke said. "We recognise that we all
must work together as a community to meet
this challenge and emerge stronger for it."
Aqueduct's winter racing had been scheduled
to end yesterday and its next fixtures were to
run from Thursday until April 19. The NYRA's
next meeting is the 51-day schedule at Belmont
Park from April 24. "NYRA is continuing to
strategise the safest options for a return to

is now favourite for the rescheduled Kentucky
Derby (Gr 1, 10f) after gaining a second Grade
1 victory in the Florida Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at
Gulfstream on Saturday. Pulling away in the
stretch, the Braclay Tagg-trained colt ran out a
four and a quarter-length winner over Shivaree
(Awesome Of Course), with Fountain of Youth
Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) scorer Ete Indien (Summer
Front) a further three-quarters of a length away
in third. Tiz The Law has won four of his five
starts to date, including the Champagne Stakes
(Gr 1, 8f) in October.
East Coast campaign for Tiz The Law With the Kentucky Derby put back from May
until September 5 due to the global coronavirus
pandemic, the Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f) has been
shifted to May 2, the day the Derby was supposed
to run, but connections have said that Tiz The
Law will remain on the East Coast. "We'll stay
here on the East Coast and see what happens,"
Jack Knowlton, who runs the Sackatoga Stable
partnership, told Bloodhorse. "I don't want to
face Bob Baffert until I have to." Knowlton’s
partnership won the Kentucky Derby and
Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) with Funny Cide
(Distorted Humor) in 2003 and he added: "I'm a
New Yorker and I'd love to run in New York again.
The Kentucky Derby is the be-all and end-all but if
they do the right thing and move the Travers and
they can run the Preakness and Belmont before,
it would give us a nice set up to the Travers and
Kentucky Derby."
Paranoia scares rivals in Appleton Social Paranoia (4 c Street Boss - Shutterbug by
Deputy Minister), a last-start Listed winner at
Kentucky Downs in September, made a successful
return to action when taking out the Appleton
Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) on the turf at Gulfstream on
Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Social
Paranoia ran second in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1,
10f) last July, beaten three quarters of a length by
Henley’s Joy (Kitten’s Joy), and the four-year-old
secured the third win of his career when fending
off the challenge of Sombeyay (Into Mischief)
by a length and a quarter at the weekend. Race-
favourite March To The Arch (Arch) was beaten a
further head into third.
69 for Into Mischief
Spendthrift Farm stallion Into Mischief (Harlan’s
Holiday) sired his 69th individual stakes winner
on Saturday when Bemma’s Boy (5 h ex Arcing
by Arch) landed the Pan American Stakes (Gr
2, 12f) on the turf at Gulfstream. Making a
deserved breakthrough in Graded company
having been Grade 3-placed on his last outing in
January, Bemma’s Boy showed a good attitude
under Florent Geroux, getting the better of Zulu
Alpha (Street Cry) by a neck. Current (Curlin)
was a further head away in third in what proved
a dramatic finish to the staying contest. Into
Mischief, who is currently standing for a career-
high fee of US$175,000, is also the sire of dual
Breeders’ Cup winner Goldencents.

Three for Daredevil
Former WinStar Farm resident Daredevil (More
Than Ready), who relocated to Turkey towards
the end of 2019, sired his third individual stakes
winner on Saturday when Swiss Skydiver (3
f ex Expo Gold by Johannesburg) ran out a
dominant winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks
(Gr 2, 8.5f). Third in a Fair Grounds Grade
2 on February 15, the Ken McPeek-trained
Swiss Skydiver continued on her upward curve
by pulling three and a quarter-lengths clear
of Lucrezia (Into Mischief) in second. Lake
Avenue (Tapit) was a further nose adrift in
third. Swiss Skydiver joins Shedaresthedevil
and Deviant as stakes winner for the sire, while
she is a general 16/1 chance for the rearranged
Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f), which is set to be run
on September 5.
Second Grade 3 for Mary Progressive mare Mean Mary (4 f ex Karlovy
Vary by Dynaformer) bolstered her already
impressive career record by landing the Orchid
Stakes (Gr 3, 11f) on the turf at Gulfstream on
Saturday. Now the winner of four races from
six starts having previously taken out the La
Prevoyante Stakes (Gr 3, 12f) at the same track
in January, Mean Mary came a length clear of
Gentle Ruler (Colonel John) under Luis Saez.
Elizabeth Way (Frankel) was a further three
and three-quarter lengths further back in third.
The Graham Motion-trained winner is one of
129 stakes winners for late Coolmore sire Scat
Daddy (Johannesburg), himself the sire of
Triple Crown hero Justify.
15 for Creative Cause
Airdrie Stud sire Creative Cause (Giant’s Causeway)
sired his 15th individual stakes winner on Saturday
when Identifier (4 c ex Can't Catch Kate by
Shakespeare) pulled one length clear of the Hal’s
Hope Stakes (Gr 3, 9f) field at Gulfstream. Trained
by Oscar Gonzalez, Identifier ran on strongly to
defeat runner-up Just Whistle (Pioneerof The Nile),
while Bodexpress (Bodemeister) was a further half-
length back in third. Creative Cause is best known as
the sire of Grade 1 winner Pavel and he is currently
standing for a fee of US$15,000.

“The 37-year wait is over; American Pharoah is finally the one!”
The breathless call of Larry Collmus
will forever remain the soundtrack
to one of racing’s greatest moments
of the modern era: when the Bob
Baffert-trained American Pharoah (Pioneerof
The Nile) strode clear for a dominant success
in the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f), becoming the
first horse in 37 years to win American racing’s
holy grail, the Triple Crown.
It was a moment made more special by
the fact that so many horses since Affirmed
(Exclusive Native) in 1978 had won both of the
first two legs of the Triple Crown - the Kentucky
Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and the Preakness Stakes (Gr
1, 9.5f) - but had come up short in New York.
Spectacular Bid (Bold Bidder), Pleasant
Colony (His Majesty), Alysheba (Alydar),
Sunday Silence (Halo), Silver Charm
(Silver Buck), Real Quiet (Quiet American),
Charismatic (Summer Squall), War Emblem
(Our Emblem), Funny Cide (Distorted Humor),
Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality), Big Brown
(Boundary), and California Chrome (Lucky
Pulpit) all broke from the Belmont gates with
a Triple Crown bid on the line; all returned
with their dreams shattered and the hearts of
a nation broken; and all added to the narrative
that a Triple Crown winner in the modern era
would require the thoroughbred equivalent of
Pegasus.
“I’m 61 and I will never see another Triple
Crown winner in my lifetime,” fumed California
Chrome’s co-owner Steve Coburn in an
infamous rant on national television after his
horse was defeated in the 2014 Belmont Stakes.
He argued that horses that were fresh into
the Belmont would always have the better
of those that had travelled from Kentucky to
Maryland to New York and contested all three
legs of the Triple Crown over a gruelling five
weeks, not to mention the prep races that were
required to score points just to gain a start at
Churchill Downs.
And then, just a year later, came American
Pharoah.
“American Pharoah’s Belmont Stakes win
was an incredible moment and to have been the
guy calling that moment was surreal,” Collmus
told ANZ Bloodstock News from his New Jersey
home.
“I’d been calling races since I was 18 years
old and it was exactly 30 years and a day since
I called that first race when I got to call that
historical moment.
“The entire building was shaking. Even
though I was eight levels up and glass enclosed,
the sound was deafening when he reached the
finish line. So many horses before him tried and
failed and here was that magical moment we’d
all been waiting for.
“The minutes after the race when it finally
kicked in were wild. The roar went on and on
as Victor Espinoza gave him a ‘victory lap’ in
front of the grandstand. I saw the video of me
banging on the window in excitement. I had no
idea I was even doing it.
“I don’t think there could ever be a race
in America that could match the excitement
of that one. The only one that came close was
when Pharoah finished his career winning the
Breeders’ Cup Classic. It was a perfect way to
end it and was very emotional for me.
For American racing fans, from the hot
walker to the chief executive, it still remains the
greatest moment they have experienced.
"I'd never before experienced anything
like that race on that day and I doubt I
ever will again,” recalled Pat Cummings,
executive director of Kentucky think tank, the
Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (TIF).

Walk like an Egyptian...or a Pharoah
American Pharoah MATHEA KELLEY
Larry Collmus TWITTER
| 10 |
“It was the closest thing to an out-of-body
racing experience. The crowd normally cheers
at the start of the Belmont and then everyone
settles - that didn't happen, and with about a
mile left to run and American Pharoah dictating
the pace, the crowd just went full throttle and
didn't stop.
“Once he passed the finish, the cheering
just did not relent for minutes, the place lost its
mind in the most wonderful way. It really was
the release of decades of emotion, and if you go
back and watch the replay of the race and the
aftermath, I think that still translates and gets
across. It gives me chills every time I watch it
back.”
While there was a 37-year wait for the 12th
member to join the pantheon of Triple Crown
greats, it has only been half as long - 18 years
- since a Triple Crown winner had a yearling
up for auction at the Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling Sale.
In 2002, the tenth Triple Crown winner
Seattle Slew (Bold Reasoning) had his final
yearlings anywhere in the world go through
the Inglis Easter sales ring, a month before his
death in Kentucky. He had three consigned
lots; two made it to the ring; only one sold. That
yearling never raced.
It will be a different story in 2020 - and not
just with American Pharoah. In fact, the 2015
Belmont is set to have a strong influence on
this year’s Inglis Easter auction, with that year’s
runner-up Frosted (Tapit) also represented for
the first time at the sale.
It will also be different in that these
yearlings, unlike the final two Seattle Slews,
won’t be going through a physical sales ring.
Until last week, the mere difference was that the
sale had shifted from the Newmarket complex
at Randwick to Warwick Farm’s Riverside site,
but with Covid-19 wreaking havoc on the sales
season, they will now be a part of a new era.
They will forever be members of the class of
2020, when Inglis Easter became the first major
auction on the planet to be conducted on a
digital platform.
At time of writing, Coolmore’s American
Pharoah had 21 lots up for grabs, with a Frosted
half-brother to New Zealand Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia
d’Oro) also set for the virtual ring.
While American Pharoah’s oldest southern
hemisphere crop are yearlings, he has already
been represented on the track in the northern
hemisphere with his oldest crop a couple of
months into their three-year-old year. And what
has caught US trainers off-guard is how adept
his runners so far have been on turf, given the
Triple Crown winner never left the dirt during
his career.
So far, American Pharoah has had six stakes
winners, four on grass. His best performer,
according to Racing Post Ratings, is the Aidan
O’Brien-trained Monarch Of Egypt, who ran
second in the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) in
August.
While the figures could be attributed to
a number of his stock being in the hands of
European trainers - O’Brien, Charlie Appleby
and Andre Fabre all have stakes-performed
American Pharoahs so far - or that his best sons
have been with one of America’s leading turf
trainers in Wesley Ward, it is being noticed by
some of the leading US trainers with a penchant
for dirt as well.
Trainer Todd Pletcher, for instance, said
of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf (Gr 1,
1m) placegetter Sweet Melania: “She kind of
fooled us a little bit, because I thought she'd
be successful sprinting on the dirt. She didn't
run badly either time, but she didn't run to
our expectations and we got her up here and
breezed her on the grass, and wow, she really
seemed to take a move forward.”
Ward, who had trans-Atlantic stakes
success with sons of American Pharoah thanks
to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Gr 2,
5f) winner Four Wheel Drive and Prix du Bois
(Gr 3, 5f) victor Maven, noted that many of the
American Pharoahs in his barn have possessed
the same calm temperament as their sire.
“From everything I saw with American
Pharoah, his demeanour, he was a very docile
horse. He was more like a stable pony than a
stallion, he could go anywhere and he took
everything in,” Ward said. “The American
Pharoahs I’ve had have been the same. Four
Wheel Drive, nothing worries him and he’s very
calm.
“I had a conversation with Bob Baffert when
the horse went to stud about what he thought
about him being a grass sire. He said that’s the
one thing he said he wished he had done, that
he wished he had run him on grass.
“For him to say that, you know, he knows
what he’s doing, and there was no reason for
him to be selling me on the question I was
asking, so I thought he gave me a truthful
answer. And American Pharoah has really
stepped it up on being a turf sire, that’s for sure.”
In 2022, there will be two Triple Crown
winners represented in the Inglis sales ring for
the first time ever when the first Justify (Scat
Daddy) yearlings make their appearance. For
now, though, Easter buyers will be swept up
in the Pharoah fever that, to this day, still rings
right around the American industry.

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING
Joao Moreira became only the fourth
jockey in Hong Kong history to reach 900
wins and he did so in style with a five-
timer at Sha Tin yesterday.
“I wasn’t counting!” the Brazilian ace said
after his fourth on the board, Picken (Duporth),
had sealed the milestone win at the end of a
tough duel for the Class 3 Nam Shan Handicap
(1400m).
Only the retired greats Douglas Whyte
and Tony Cruz, and Moreira’s brilliant
championship rival Zac Purton, have reached
the 900 mark previously. Moreira achieved it at
his 4,094th ride, at a win strike rate just shy of 22
per cent, in only his seventh Hong Kong season.
“It’s a great mark to reach but I want to be
looking back on it, leaving it behind,” he said,
mindful of his unrelenting battle to regain the
jockeys’ championship. He ended the day on
901.
Moreira used everything he had to seal
the win on the John Size-trained Picken as
Neil Callan’s mount Toycoon (Turffontein)
challenged with determined intent. The two
horses responded to the power-packed driving
of their respective pilots but it was the one they
call ‘Magic Man’ who conjured enough to get
his mount’s nose past the post in the nick of
time – the margin was a short-head.
“It’s amazing how hard it was to win this
race! Neil’s horse didn’t want to give up but
fortunately I had the edge on him at the right
time,” Moreira said.
“We knew Picken was coming to form – he’s
at a quite nice place in the handicap and we
knew he was there to win his race and I’m very
lucky to be getting on him at the right time.”
Juneau on the upMoreira’s five-timer took him back to the
top of the jockeys’ premiership with 94 wins to
Purton’s 92, although the Australian excelled
with a double. The Brazilian’s haul included a
smart success on the upwardly mobile Juneau
Park (Ocean Park) in section two of the Class 4
So Uk Handicap (1400m).
The Size-trained four-year-old made it two
wins on the bounce at only his fifth start and his
rider was suitably pleased with the effort under
a 60 kilogram impost.
“My opinion is high, he’s a nice horse,”
Moreira said. “Only good horses do what he has
done – I know he had a suitable run but he had
to improve to win today carrying top-weight.
“He hasn’t been exposed, he hasn’t raced
too many times and he’s only gone forward.
This indicates to me that he’s not a bad one.”
The New Zealand-bred gelding raced fifth
along the fence, shifted out at the top of the
straight and wound up into a raking run that
took him to the lead 250 metres out. The bay
then kept on gamely to win by half a length.
“He’s a bit big so he needs momentum
and he had that today, it helped him to win,”
Moreira continued. “It’s hard to predict where
he’ll get to ratings-wise but the improvement
he’s shown means he’s pointing up.”
Moreira kicked off his quintet with an easy
six-length win aboard the John Moore-trained
Above (Tavistock) in the Class 4 Tai Hang Tung
Handicap (2000m), and then sealed the Class
3 Lai Kok Handicap (1200m) on the Danny
Shum-trained Fantasy (Sizzling).
He capped the day with a sublime score
aboard the Size-trained Shining Ace (Testa
Rossa) in the finale, the Class 2 Chak On
Handicap (1200m), stealing a march and
holding the talented pair of Computer Patch
(Exceed And Excel) and Transcendent
(Dabirsim) in the minor placings.
“John (Size) and I had in the back of our
minds that he won on a softer surface and we
thought he would handle it, but he actually
handled it better than we thought. It was
an impressive win and the handicapper is
probably going to hammer him but he deserves
to win like that,” Moreira said.

“John has done a great job with yet another
horse, he’s got him up in his rating and he’s won
impressively in Class 2.”
Size’s treble today was his first such score
this term. His last three-timer came on May 25
last year, when Shining Ace was again one of
his winners on the day. The 11-time champion
trainer’s haul took him to 33 overall this term,
12 behind premiership leader Ricky Yiu.
Purton again maintained tabs on his
opponent though and struck a double in
tandem with trainer Paul O’Sullivan.
Grade One (Manhattan Rain) made the
most of a drop to Class 4 and burst to a half-
length win in the Shek Kip Mei Handicap
(1200m); and Purton ensured Band Of Brothers
(Sakhee’s Secret) got back on the winning trail
with a sweetly-judged ride to take the Class 3
Pak Tin Handicap (1600m).
War Of Courage (Declaration Of War) held
off Valiant Dream (Magnus) by a short-head
in a driving finish to the Class 3 Cheung Sha
Wan Handicap (1000m). Chad Schofield on the
winner defied Blake Shinn’s late effort with a
last-gasp thrust that saw his mount dip his head
as the pair flashed past the post.
Victor Wong set the ideal tempo for a make-
all win aboard the Manfred Man-trained Care
Free Prince (Street Sense) in section one of the
Class 4 So Uk Handicap (1400m).
Soccer Master (Iffraaj) took the opener, the
Class 5 Un Chau Handicap (1400m), for trainer
Chris So and jockey Matthew Poon.
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on
Wednesday, April 1.
