Fernandez, Silvestre of Hanama‘ulu died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 27, 2006 at the age of 95. Born Dec. 31, 1910, he retired as a chief irrigator and field hand for Lihue Plantation. He was also the pioneer and head pastor of The Way of Salvation Church in Kapa‘a for over 45 years. His passion was to pray, to read and preach the word of God to any one he met. His memory and legacy will live on with those who met and knew him. He was preceded in death by his first wife Isabel Fernandez, two step-daughters Carlina F. Jimenez, Helen (Raymon) Del Rosario and two sisters Luisa F. Bumanglag, Julia F. Oasay of the Philipines. Flores, Danny, who played the saxophone and uttered the word “tequila!” in the 1950s hit song “Tequila!”, has died at 77, Huntington Beach, Calif. Flores, who lived in Westminster, died Tuesday at Huntington Beach Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Currant. He died of complications from pneumonia, the ‘Long Beach Press-Telegram reported. The man sometimes called the “godfather of Latin rock” was born in Santa Paula but grew up in Long Beach. By age 5, he was playing guitar in church and at 14 he was a member of a trio that performed Mexican music. In 1957, Flores was in a group that recorded some work with rockabilly singer Dave Burgess. One of the songs was based in a nameless riff Flores had written. He played the “dirty” saxophone part and repeatedly growled the single-word lyric: “Tequila!”. “Tequila!” went to No.

A second generation Italian-American, he was born on April 30, 1920, in the steel town of Aliquippa, Penn. Fontana entered the U.S. Army as a private and received a battlefield commission as an officer, then went on to serve on General McArthur’s staff during WWII. He left the service to pursue a career in retail management which he concluded as Chairman of the Board and President of Christopher Hemmeter’s retail division of Mark Christopher. Upon retirement Bill also worked for HDS and was dedicated to charity work through his involvement in Rotary and Easter Seals. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years of marriage, Mary Fontana, two children, William and James Fontana, daughter-in-law Barbara Fontana, grandsons William, Anthony and Steven Fontana; granddaughter Deena Fontana Moraes; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kaimana and Masao.A private family celebration of his life will be held at the Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery in Hanapepe.
