In associationwith

CommentSo, the Brexit deal's done. The terms dictated by a minority political group andbased entirely on doctrinaire self interest. But we can move onto a trade deal.Or can we?The minute there was agreement the Brexit lobby started its cant.

Gove told us that if we don't like the deal we can change it at the nextelection. One presumes he means that he and his buddies could bring downthe present government, triggering the election, with himself as primeminister leading the country to sunny, Europe free uplands. He and Boris thenboth laid down the law as to the kind of trade deal we want and David Davishas suggested that if we don't get what we want we would welch on the'divorce' agreement.

It rather concerns me that those who we appoint to lead us live in suchfantasy lands.Though then I suppose that in politics these days there is reallylittle but fantasy. If they couldn't imagine themselves as leading the country(imagine Gove Coer de Lion seated on a charger, sword held aloft) toconquer all our foes – well the French first of course, then the rest of Europe– there is little else for them to do.

But I digress:

What really concerns me is that those whom we obediently elect to leadus can be so self centred as to cheerfully cause damage, perhaps seriousdamage, to the country's economy. And it is not just me and the rest of the42% of the population who voted to remain in Europe, the Americans areworried too.A US think tank, the Rand Corporation, reckons that with a 'nodeal' scenario the UK economy would be 4.9% poorer by 2029. It also saysthat the 'soft' Brexit scenario would still leave us worse off that staying in theEU.

The Rand Corporation plays a significant role in the US with half of itsfunding coming from the US government. In Europe it advises the UKgovernment on a variety of topics as well as advising both the Europeancommission and the European parliament.

Its report reckons that Brexit is likely to have a 'mostly negative' effect onUS interests in Europe.

If you are thinking about trade deals it may be worth noting that tradenegotiations between the US and the EU (the Trans-Atlantic Trade andInvestment Partnership) are not supported by President Donald Trump andare 'in a hiatus'.

According to Charles Ries, a vice-president at Rand and the report's leadauthor: “The analysis clearly shows that the UK will be economically worse-off outside of the EU under most trade scenarios – the key question for theUK is how much worse-off."

He says: "It is in the best interests of the UK, and to a lesser extent the EU,to achieve some sort of open trading and investment relationship post-Brexit."

The people playing politics are unlikely to be much affected whateverhappens. A few backbenchers might be thrown out of work following anelection but the principle protagonists are pretty well healed anyway and inthe unlikely event they get chucked out, jobs on boards, in the city andjournalism await. As for the rest of us? Well, there is always universal credit tofall back on.

I wish all our readers worryfree Christmas and a prosperous new year.

Glass and extrusionrelated industries haveconsolidated considerablyover recent years and itwas inevitable that PVC-U window and door fabricationwould follow. Keeping efficient local manufacture anddistribution seems to work well for PVC-U windows anddoors.

When investment is considered one thought is to holdoff buying equipment due to uncertainties but the otherside of the coin suggests that PVC-U fabrication is intothe survival of the fittest, meaning investing is vital forsome that haven’t done enough or haven’t kept up withthe times. In fact quite a lot of investment that ishappening or needed is to replace obsolescent or worn outequipment.

A number of Stuga’s sawing and machining centers aremuch older than the 10 to 15 years expected lifespan.Thisfinds Stuga nursing some machines for owners who, forwhatever reason, haven’t changed them. It has beenparticularly noticeable in the last two to three years thatsuccessful Stuga fabricators are choosing top of the rangemachines where they have the volumes to justify them. The fabricators purchasing these new machines haveclearly had the vision to reinvest and been planningconsiderable capital investment on an ongoing basiswhich is why they are at the top of their game. ❐

COVER STORY

The Fabricator 20178

Stuga’s market research has led it to conclude that thePVC-U window industry is very likely around 10%-

15% down finacially, and 15%-20% down in volume, compared with 2016, Significant, but not a disaster andfollowing a very good year in 2016 it isn’t perhaps as badas it seems. Indications are that it is now improving inmany sectors and we are seeing this through service worklevels. There are clearly sectors and individual companieswithin the industry that fly against these trends and someof these will be taking market share from others in theirsector. New build is an obviously buoyant sector.

One factor that appears clear is that much of the PVC-U window and door industry is consolidating with largeorganisations being created out of takeovers andamalgamations. This is particularly so for fabrication and2017 saw the continuation of this trend in particular with

Investment needed2017 has been a bit of a roller coaster for the PVC-U sector. Steve Haines, Stuga sales andmarketing director, reviews the year, considers the consolidation and recommends moreinvestment to get fabricators up-to-speed

money to fund anexpressway roadbetween Oxfordand Cambridge.

In addition tothe £1.5bn fundalready given tothe Midlands, thearea will alsoreceive an extra£6m towardsmotorway and railprojects, and£392m towardsbetteringtransport links.

By improvingthe accessibilityof these regions, the government is providingopportunities for work on the projects and in the regionsthemselves. Indeed, new transport links could create ademand for hotels, service stations, car parks, or homeswhich will need to be met by UK companies.

By appearing in trade magazines through strategic PR,for example, you can share details of your experience, casestudies of your work, and your company’s success. Thiswill help keep you at the forefront of consideration forcontracts that may arise from the new budget allocations.

Talent poolsA further issue addressed by the budget is the problem

of the UK’s diminishing talent pools. While the Chancellor has laid out plans to increase the

number of students taking STEM subjects – driving moretowards careers in engineering – or on constructiontraining courses, it is uncertain how effective thesemeasures will be.

At present, around 8% of the construction sector’sworkforce comes from the EU and, in post-Brexit Britain, there is a chance that some of these workers will not stayin the UK for an extended period of time.

In order to reinforce your business during this skillsshortage, you must position it as an attractive place towork, appealing to resident workers and helping build uptalent pools. Indeed, by promoting your corporateresponsibility, innovative products, or the importance ofyour service through marketing, you can grow yourbusiness and support the industry at the same time. ❐

Arguably the foundation of the construction industry, the issue of housing was extremely pressing for many

businesses in the run-up to the budget. However, manywill have been pleased by the government’s intention toincrease the annual housebuilding target to 300,000. Toachieve this figure, a new housing support fund of£15.6bn has been launched, taking the total housingbudget to £44bn.

Furthermore, the decision to abolish stamp duty forfirst-time buyers could spark an increase in the demandfor smaller, affordable homes and create moreopportunities for home improvement companies.

The government’s new initiatives could mean anincrease in the number of contracts available toconstruction companies. As a result, it is important thatbusinesses increase their visibility. Social media, emailmarketing, PR and direct mail can all help build yourbrand, raise awareness of your business’s values, andposition your company as a thought leader.

Empty homesAccording to government figures, more than 200,000

homes in the UK were empty for at least six months in2016 and the Chancellor of the Exchequer PhilipHammond has suggested that the conversion of emptyhomes will become a priority in 2018.

Local councils will be given the authority to charge100% council tax on properties which have remainedempty and unfurnished for at least two years.

For the construction industry, specifically homeimprovement companies, this could mean a spike inbusiness and increased competition for renovationcontracts. Indeed, Hammond also stated that £400m is tobe invested in the restoration of housing estates aroundthe UK.

New developmentsThe Chancellor also stated that investigations could be

carried out into the gap between the number of planningpermissions granted and the number of housing projectsstarted. If developers are found to be land-banking thiscould result in the implementation of compulsorypurchase orders.

Compulsory purchase orders would free up space foreven more new developments. At present, £1.2bn of the£44bn housing budget is reserved specifically for thepurchase of land.

With the construction of new housing estates comes aneed for products – windows, doors, hardware – as well asservices from project managers, installers, and architects.

TransportHammond announced that £1.7bn has been set aside to

fund city region transport. The budget also included

Recent announcements regarding November’s budget have got many businesses asking how theycan prepare for the new year and, at the same time, take full advantage of the Chancellor’sannouncements. To help readers get to grips with the answers,Andrew Scott has provided us with afive-part breakdown of the budget, what it will mean for construction companies, and how toprepare for the future

GLASS & STRUCTURAL GLAZING

The Fabricator 201712

In smart homes, the integration of different componentshappens on a much more detailed level at a much earlier

stage in the design process. ‘Digital twins’ of buildings willbe created in virtual reality in special labs, wherearchitects and specifiers will be able to see how a buildingand its different components work together for maximumperformance. This will affect every manufacturer andinstaller in construction – including windows specialists –who will need to work with a new breed of systemintegrators, ensuring that all the elements of the smarthome work together – and can be controlled from a singledevice.

At Swisspacer’s recent Fenestra-Vision symposium inSalzburg, Andreas Bittis, product manager at Saint-Gobain Building Glass, explained how smart solutionsrely heavily on the communication between components,

disciplines, and users. “For example,” he said, “anintelligent radio-frequency identification (RFID) chipmakes it possible to seamlessly document the lifecycle ofa window – from production, user behaviour andmaintenance, and all the way to disposal.”

As far as the buyer of a smart home is concerned, all thiswill be largely invisible. They will simply live in a housethat is economical to run, with comfort levels that can beadjusted using a single app on their phone. As symposiumkeynote speaker Dr Richard Keill, chairman of the boardof Roto Frank AG said: “If it takes 17 different apps tooperate a single window, that is clearly too many.Everything needs to be integrated in a single system.”

Plenty of innovations over the past 20 years have madewindows and doors more energy efficient but, in general, people buying a new-build house don’t want to know howefficient the windows are – only how comfortable thebuilding as a whole is to live in and how much it will cost

to heat and light. So, it is vital for

installers to informhomeowners what effectdifferent products willhave on the energyefficiency of the wholebuilding. Swisspacer’sfree phone app Caluwinlets users calculate U-values and WER ratingsto show homeownerswhat the cost of heatingthe building is likely tobe. Ensuring installershave an app like this

means they can demonstrate the effect of differentwindow components and how they work together forbetter thermal performance.

For fabricators willing to embrace the digital revolution, there could be huge rewards. The experts at the Fenestra-Vision symposium agreed that smart buildings will likelybe controlled via the building envelope, giving facade andwindow specialists a vital role in the new world order.

John Cooper, commercial director, Swisspacer says:“Smart homes will soon be the norm – and developers willbe looking for specialist fabricators with the bestperforming windows that can be integrated seamlesslyinto the digital whole. Fabricators who embrace thetechnology and disciplines of smart home constructionwill be in the best position to profit from the nextrevolution in construction. Will you be one of them?” ❐

www.swisspacer.com

Smarts, combinedThe ‘smart homes’ of the future will of course be fitted with super-efficient windows and doors, butthe really clever bit is how the comfort levels of these homes will be controlled. As high performingas new cutting edge materials and components are, what’s really impressive – and what is going tomake the biggest impact in the windows industry – is how the different components integratetogether and how they are controlled. Smartphones are the real enabler here, as they allow all thedifferent elements of the smart home to be controlled from one device

Lisec, manufacturer of equipment and machinery forffL lat glass processing, claims to have revolutionised

logistical handling of insulating glass units. Its newsystem, comprising a gantry crane facility (UTS-B) and amobile unit buffer (MEB-B) improves quality, saves time, resources and money according to Lisec.

The automatic gantry crane (UTS-B), is arrangeddownstream of a Lisec sealing machine; it is particularlysuitable for unstacking newly sealed insulating glass unitswith fixed or flexible spacer systems with particularadvantages for thermoplastic spacers. The unit buffers arespecifically designed to allow the thermoplastic spacers tocure directly at the buffer.

As the glass units are sent out in the direction of the linethey are rotated from horizontal to upright position beforebeing sorted into the mobile buffer system (MEB-B).Thebuffer allows manual or automatic unloading, curing andtransporting of IGUs obviating the need for re-sorting,acording to Lisec.

The individual transport racks can be coded for eachcustomer. The new Lisec delivery tracking simplifieslogistical handling, provides transparency and saves timein the logistics process.

The entire modular system can be adapted to thecustomer's space requirements and is compatible withalmost all current Lisec lines. ❐

highlighted the role for the circular economy, given themassive changes taking place around the world and theneed for us to better manage the finite ‘stuff’ on ourplanet. She went on to highlight market and systemfailures relating to construction. Businesses in the supplychain need to start asking themselves if they are resilientand innovative, able to respond to the economic andsocietal changes taking place.

Andrew Kinsey, operations director – sustainability,Mace Group started with some of the typical industryresponses to this topic: “Circular economy, isn’t that justa fancy way of saying recycling?” and: “Our clients don’task for circular economy goods and services.” As well aspossible regulatory drivers for the circular economy,Kinsey identified green building assessment schemes, offsite construction (and possible deconstruction), BIMand material traceability as additional drivers.

The final presentation neatly joined together the themesof the day and provided a practical example for ourindustry. Juan Azcárate, a researcher at Delft University ofTechnology explored how facades could be delivered as aservice, allowing a building owner to lease their facade inthe future. By installing an integrated facade to replace anoutdated unitised system at the university, it has beenpossible to carry out a study into the total cost ofownership for such a facade on a leased basis. Thisapproach incentivises technical innovation to improvequality and reduce maintenance. Azcárate’s closingremark highlighted that all stakeholders should have thesame goal: to do more with less. ❐

ALUMINIUM – THE COLUMN

In the opening keynote address, Chris Ashworth,Competitive Advantage, picked up from the

recommendations of the Farmer Report, Modernise or Die,and explained that we are not primarily looking at whizzyways to make products, but rather whizzy ways to use datafrom those products when installed, that could in turn leadto new products and services.

Ken Davie, head of offsite and modern methods ofconstruction research at Carillion plc, developed thetheme of design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA)and the need for product manufacturers and specialistcontractors to develop an industrialisation as well as acollaboration mindset. Quoting from the government’sDigital Built Britain (DBB) strategic plan, Davie notedthat: “Fully computerised construction must become thenorm so the benefits of these technologies are realised.”

The opportunities for digitalisation were explored byElizabeth Kavanagh, head of HR and head of research andinnovation at Stride Treglown. She explained how DBBwill deliver a digital economy for the built environmentand described the ‘servitization’ of the industry, movingaway from making products to delivering services. Thiswill require a new skill set and more ‘T-shaped’ people –that is in-depth technical knowledge combined with abroad mix of creative and interpersonal skills.

Michael Swiszczowski, associate director, ChapmanTaylor, introduced ‘umbrellahaus’, its offsite housingmodel that draws inspiration from other sectors as well asfrom their direct experience. Swiszczowski compared theautomotive and construction sectors, with a carengineered from different modules to precision by robotsin a factory, whereas a house is typically built in a muddyfield. Concerning the interfaces between the differentbuild elements related to the facade, he closed with a pleato all delegates: “We need your expertise.”

Jane Thornback, Construction Products Association,

CAB technical director, Dr Justin Furness with the speakers at the CAB Aluminium in Building conference 2017

This year’s Aluminium in Building Conference focused on offsite construction and thecircular economy. For both issues, there is a need for the construction industry to dosomething that does not normally come naturally: collaboration

though there are regional differences.”The chief financial officer Michael

Stangier said that the Group turnover of622 million euros achieved in 2016 andwas exactly the same as the lthe previousyear. This consistency is to beconsidered a success on balance, due tothe powerful resistance encountered formarket and currency reasons. Theobjective for 2017 has been to achieve aslight turnover increase and tooutperform both the markets andcompetitors whilst retaining a solidfoundation.

Stangier said: “As at 30th Septemberthe Window and Door Technology(FTT) division showed a slight turnoverincrease compared to the same period in

the previous year. This means that it is performingaccording to plan as a whole. The first three quartersshowed changeable development – from 'really good' to'mediocre' to 'still OK’.”

Stangier described the moderate turnover losses inRussia as 'in line with the market, “Another disastrousyear,” he said, “has luckily failed to materialise. In China, growth for Roto is as good as in the USA. Without adoubt, Canada is among the positive surprises. In Brazil, group member Fermax was able to distance itself to someextent from the general weak performance on the market.Currency effects in the South American country, whichare favourable for Roto are also worth a mention –because they are atypical of 2017.”

For 2018 the group is planning a turnover increase ofbetween 3% and 5%. The plan is to perform above themarket average to create a long-term turnaround of therevenue trend.

“To achieve these targets,” says Keill, “we pursue aconsistent forward strategy. Everything we do is to ensureintegral implementation of our strict ‘customer first’principle.” ❐

Opening the conference Rotochairman Dr Eckhart Keill said:

“We are predicting a total turnover ofaround 630 million euros, which is onbalance 1% to 2% above 2016 in aglobally consolidated market. Ifeconomic policies don’t get in the waywe expect good opportunities in generalfor 2018 and anticipate market growthof between 3% and 5%. The companywould like to participate in this.” Keillreported that the internationalconstruction industry was in slightlybetter shape in 2017. He said: “Allthings considered, after drastic losses, the economy in Russia, for example, isslowly recovering again. However, continued uncertainty can be felt, meaning that incipient stabilisation in residentialconstruction remains fragile. In contrast, in China, theconstruction sector is proving to be the mainstay ofgeneral economic growth.”

Similarly the upswing in the USA is continuing with anincrease expected to be in the mid-single-digit range.Neither the moderately increased interest rate, nor“Trump’s erratic policies” have had a negative impact asyet. In Canada, the recovery of the construction industrywas much better than predicted after two weak years. ButKeill confirmed continued differentiated development forLatin America. For instance, a renewed positive trend inArgentina is in contrast with a construction industry thatis slowing once again in Brazil, and now also in Mexico.

Keill said: “In Europe, the slight upwards trend is likelyto pick up speed. The Euroconstruct research network isexpecting an average construction growth of 3% for its 19member countries. However, upon closer examination, the situation in each individual country remains verydifferent, as always.”

Keill said: “Last year I predicted that there would bestabilisation in 2017. This is exactly what happened
