In 1910, fol-lowing King Leopold’s death, the Lado Enclave became a province of theAnglo–Egyptian Sudan, with Stigand appointed Administrator. In 1912 thesouthern half of the Lado Enclave was ceded to Uganda, then a British pro-tectorate. British authorities failed to effectively administer the area, leavingthe enclave to become a ’bad-man’s land’. Ivory hunters moved in and shotalmost all of an estimated herd of 2000 elephants resident in the enclavebetween 1909 & 1912. Sources consider that the publicity from this huntand the resulting public outrage led to the beginnings of the conservationmovement.

Geologist and naturalist to Alexander Johnston’s 1878 Royal Geograph-ical Society expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to LakeNyasa and Lake Tanganyika. After the death of Johnston, Thomson tookthe leadership and successfully led the expedition over 3,000 miles. In 1883,he embarked on another Royal Geographical Society expedition, this timeto explore a route from the eastern coast of Africa to the northern shoresof Lake Victoria. Later travels included exploring north of the Zambezi toconclude treaties and gain mining concessions from tribal chiefs on behalf ofthe British South Africa Company. Thomson’s Gazelle is named after him.
