FAAWIS-PNAWI Joint Spring Bowling Fundraiser
OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE FILIPINO AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WISCONSIN June 2013
O n April 6, FAAWIS in partnership with the PNA Wisconsin hosted
the annual spring bowling tournament held at JB’s on 41, formerly Olympic lanes. 25 registered teams joined the highly anticipated event and drew varied crowd of bowlers. Whether throwing strikes, gutter balls, or just having plain fun, the afternoon all went to a good cause. Proceeds from the affair benefited the free medical clinic of the PCCCF which provides basic medical care to the uninsured and underinsured in the Mil-waukee area and outlying counties. With each strike of a pin and after the final bowl was rolled, the rest is history. And as the official standings show, some perennial favorites and names graced the score-board once again. In the team rankings, 1st place went to the PCCCF group : Jojo Ramos, Gerry Ramos, Mareta Prill and Bob Prill. 2nd place was captured by the FMC group of Cyril Azcueta, Katrina Aganon, Anna Loomer and Gabe Gon-zales. In the individual men’s division, Paul Clemente bowled his way to an impressive 1st place followed by a strong showing by Patrick Elliott for 2nd place. Gerry Ramos grabbed 3rd place. The women’s division saw Anna Loomer taking 1st place as she squeezed past Annalie
Moloney, who secured a nice 2nd place. Mareta Prill followed with a 3rd place finish. Highlight of the event was a 50/50 raffle won by Mr. Tom Hey. And the affair culminated with the presentation of proceeds to Dr. Violeta Singson, medical director of the free medical clinic at the PCCCF by FAAWIS president, Zen Edralin and Gem Cubos, pres-elect of PNA WI. The bowling committee led by Ed Catacutan and members: Patrick Moloney , Minnie Parbs, Gem Cubos and Zen Edralin as well as all the participants who extended their support made this fundraiser a rousing success.

The Filipino American Association of Wiscon-sin (FAAWIS) had a Movie Night benefit for Mr. Jaime Magracia, our kababayan, this past
April 6th at the Philippine Center (PCCCF) at Zablocki Park. It was a well attended event to help Mr. Magracia who is experiencing medi-cal and financial difficulties at this time. It began with a mass presided by Father Jojo
Orosa at 4:30 PM. Then afterwards, there was a dinner provided by many generous sponsors in our Filipino American community. Dinner comprising of many Filipino dishes and des-serts were delicious. There was plenty to go around. A $10 donation for adults and $5 do-nation for children were accepted. Before the movie showing, a monetary do-nation of $830 donated generously by numer-ous people in our Filipino American Commu-nity was presented by Mrs. Zen Edralin, FAAWIS President, to Mrs. Daisy Magracia, Jaime’s wife, who accepted it gratefully. Then we enjoyed watching a Tagalog Movie, SIS-TEREKAS, starring Vice Ganda, Kris Aquino, Aiai de las Alas, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. Overall, our community came together nicely to assist our fellow Filipino in need of our help. Maraming salamat sa lahat! Many thanks to All!

Presenter: Fr. Eugene Tiongson-Batungbacal, C.Ss.R. , associate pastor of Holy Ghost Parish, Houston, TX. Theme: "Gulong ng PALAD: Driving our Life towards a Union with God". The term "gulong ng palad" literally trans-lates as the wheel of one's palm. It means that a person can be the master of his or her own destiny. It demonstrates one's way of manag-ing one's own fortune. But can we actually be successful in managing
our own life without acknowledg-ing the presence and work of God? This retreat will allow you to re-flect about your own self and how your life reveals the ways of the Father in Heaven. We will medi-tate on the ways of the Cross as
you and I walk through the joys and sorrows of life. We will also bask in the glory of God's plan within our lives and learn to allow the light of God to shine upon us through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will do an Examination
of Conscience to clear the path for God's mercy. Conferences, Eucha-rist, opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and great meals. NOT a silent retreat.

President’s Corner
Greetings! FAAWIS in collaboration with the PNAWI cele-brated the coming of spring with a
bowling funfest last April 6, 2013 at JB’s on 41. Thank you to everybody who came to participate and made this event fun and memorable and congratulations to our top bowler’s! The event’s success benefits our Free Medical Clinic Center located at the PCCCF which supports a lot of the Filipino community who are uninsured and underinsured. What a great way to have fun, share and help! After bowling that same after-noon at the PCCCF Center, the com-munity came out to support an-other cause for the healing of our kababayan, Jaime Magracia. At that time, Mr. Magracica was still in the hospital receiving his treatment. The successful event was coordi-nated by group of dedicated, com-passionate and committed Kababay-ans; Mimi Ballesteros; Dr. Violeta Singson; Gem Cubos; Maria Tilistyak and Angie Varona. The event started with a healing mass pre-sided by Fr. Jojo Orosa; then a light dinner, spread of desserts, sodas and followed by the Tagalog movie Sisterrakas. We collected a gener-ous amount of donation from the community for the Magracias.
Thank you to all who came out and poured their sup-port. Please save the date for: June 15, 2013 is the FAAWIS annual picnic in celebration of our inde-pendence day. It will be at Wirth Park Brookfield @ 11:00 am. More exciting information and agenda of activities for both chil-dren and adult will be in the flyer, so please watch out. A Mass will also be celebrated and is scheduled at 4:00 pm by Fr. Jojo Orosa. Dr. Marie Rebancos is chairing this event with the help of Dino Capitan. A donation of potluck food for 10 based on the first letter of your last name will be greatly appreciated, this information can also be found in the flyer. August 31, 2013 FAAWIS will host its Annual Formal Dinner & Dance at the Brookfield Suites Hotel & Convention Center. This year’s theme is a fashion show entitled “Fashionistas of FAAWIS” and will feature the children, youth, men and women of FAAWIS modeling traditional and modern Philippine/ American fashion designs. This exciting event also serves as FAAWIS’ major fundraising event of the year. With your contribution, we will be able to continue to do the following: support various chari-table organizations such as the Phil-ippine Center Free Medical Clinic, the Philippine Nurses Association, and the Hunger Task Force; pro-mote cultural and educational
awareness through Filipino dance & music with our FAAWIS Dance Troupes; award scholarships and monetary awards to our deserving youths in our community; and pro-vide quality social and cultural pro-grams throughout the year. Two great events surely not to be missed. Please spread the word and let us come together as we continue to preserve our culture’s heritage as well as enjoy each others company with food, fun and merry gather-ings!
Welcome ALL and Thank you for
your continued participation in
FAAWIS events.

The UPAAW Scholarship Commit-tee recently announced the expan-sion of scholarship awards criteria to include financial need and the doubling of the available award monies to $2000 from $1000 for the school year 2013-14. The scholar-ship awards are available to gradu-ating high school seniors of Filipino parentage going to college this com-ing fall. Along with the other scholarship criteria, consisting of academics, personal essay, and co- and extra-curricular activities, financial need will be evaluated through the stu-dent’s feedback from his chosen
college of his need for financial assistance. The chosen college will assess, through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) submitted by the student, how mu c h f i n an c i a l a s s i s t an c e (scholarships and non-loan awards) he will receive. The amount of need-based loan taken by the student, beyond the non-loan financial assis-tance offered by his chosen college, will be the primary basis for weigh-ing financial need. In the event that the student did not submit a FAFSA, financial need will be as-sessed through the documented amount of student/parent loan taken.
The number receiving awards this year will depend on the number and qualifications of the scholarship applicants. The top award, the UPAAW Guansing-Regala Scholar-ship, is for $1000. Other applicants will share the next $1000, to be awarded according to the scores they attain under the same set of criteria. New application forms can be obtained by email request from Apol Ortiguera at [email protected]. Deadline for submission of applications is July 31. Please call 414-353-6570 for any questions.

TREASURER’S REPORT - FY 2012 By Donald Mondano
Presented report found on the next page is FAAWIS’ fi-nancial activity statement for the fiscal year ended Decem-ber 31, 2012. The organization ended the year in a better stead with an additional $1,571 to its coffers, bringing its total cash funds to $33,036 as of February 28, 2013. The various activities during the year had varying results in financial terms, with the Dinner Dance and Holiday Folk Fair being the more cash generative activities, offset by the net cash outflows in our Summer Picnic and Lunch with Santa gatherings. During the year, the association donated $2,725 to other Filipino organizations within the community, of which amount, $1,500 went to the Philippine Cultural and Civic Center Foundation, Inc.. Consistent with prior years, the organization presented a $1,000 Youth Scholarship Grant to a deserving Filipino youth, and this year’s award went to Bryce Uy. Expenditures were also incurred for the cabi-nets, totes and storage bins to store the organization’s Dance Troupe paraphernalia and materials. Overall, FY 2012 was a great year for the organization, not only in terms of the various successful activities that fostered the Filipino culture and spirit, but also in terms of financial results. The organization, going forward, will now regularly pro-vide its members with a financial report of the various ac-tivities and endeavors during the year; this is to ensure that the organization and its officers remain transparent and responsible in managing the organization’s financial re-sources. The next financial report will be in the next issue of the Bulalakaw which will cover the two major activities by the association for the first half of the year, specifically the Annual Bowling and Summer Picnic events.
T here are many vehicles used for retire-ment planning. One of the most com-
mon is the traditional IRA (individual retire-ment account). Contributions to IRAs are often tax deductible and distributions are of-ten taxable as income. Another type of IRA is the Roth IRA in which contributions are made after tax and distributions can be tax-free. Tax-free withdrawals can be attractive which often prompts the question - can a traditional IRA be converted to a Roth IRA? The answer is yes. As of 2010, there are no longer income limitations for single tax-payers and married taxpayers filing jointly. The restrictions based on the filing status of married filing separately have also been re-pealed. Conversions are not considered distribu-tions but are fully taxable. Any deductible contributions and gains will be taxable to the owner and included in income in the year of the conversion. A special deferral was avail-able for 2010 conversions, allowing the owner to elect to include ½ of the conversion income in 2011 and the balance in 2012. For Roth owners under age 59 ½, a special rule applies to conversion amounts. The con-
version is not subject to the 10% federal in-come tax p e n a l t y . Any distribution of the conversion amounts, made in the five-year period following the conversion, will subject the conversion por-tion to the 10% penalty, unless an exception applies. This includes distributions to pay the income taxes due on the conversion. This prevents a Traditional IRA owner from avoid-ing the 10% penalty by first converting to a Roth IRA. Earnings on any conversions dis-tributed within the first 5 years are also tax-able and will also be subject to the tax penalty if under 59 1/2. Generally, it is best to pay any all income taxes for the conversion from other assets. Since 2008, employer-sponsored retire-ment plans can be rolled directly to a Roth IRA. IRA transfers and rollovers are powerful financial tools. If properly handled, these transactions allow funds to be shifted between IRAs or withdrawn and re-deposited within
the allowed time periods without paying in-come taxes. The end result is often greater convenience and/or greater control of funds for the IRA owner. If you think a transfer or rollover might make sense for you, contact a qualified financial professional. 0192691-00001-01, Ed 05/07/2012, Exp 11/07/2013 “ Provided courtesy of The Prudential In-

Last October, Amy Schemenauer ran a Penny Drive to benefit the PCCCF’s Free Medical Clinic. The Drive was held at Grantosa Drive K-8 School, where Amy is a teacher in Early Childhood Special Educa-tion. It ran for 2 weeks, during which students were encouraged to bring in pennies and other loose change daily. To make it more fun and to elicit participation, a contest was set it place. The classroom that raised the most money earned a pizza/movie party, with 2nd and 3rd place earning popcorn and juice. Each classroom that participated received a special “token” treat.
The pizza was donated by FMC founder and director, Dr. Violeta Singson, while all other food and treats were donated by Amy Sche-menauer.
This Penny Drive, titled
“Change for Charity”, was a huge
success, raising $613…..85 percent
of which was pennies. students of

Congratulations to
Rogelio C. Mendoza for receiving the Expressive Cultural Heritage Award from the Interna-tional Institute of Wisconsin. “Uncle Roger” or “Roger” (as most of us know him by) was one of four outstanding recipients honored on April 27th at the Institute’s pres-tigious World Citizen Award and Celebration held at the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin in downtown Milwaukee. Roger was recognized as a “Tradition Keeper” for his many years of volunteerism and dedicated service with the Holiday Folk Fair, in particular for his creative work in displaying the Filipino Cultural booth for more than 35 years. Twenty of Roger's family, friends and members of FAAWIS who worked closely with him through the years attended the event to celebrate and support his achievement.
