FA1601 New Media: Digital Art GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY | Fall 2017

Project 1 | Photographic Remix / Mash-up

In this class we have been talking about what it is to remix elements and to create something new. For this project you are going to have the opportunity to do this yourself. You will make a series of three digital compositions (triptych) that will interact with each other visually and conceptually. I would recommend making your series reflect something you feel passionate about – or –possibly a portraiture project where you create an alternate reality for yourself using photo collage. We will go over some of the Photoshop tools that will help you create the work but this project is a chance for you to explore and experiment! So take some risks! You do not just have to use Photoshop for this assignment. There are plenty of interesting tools online that can be used. For example something like https://sketch.io/sketchpad/ can be a lot of fun to play with and add to your images. The goal is to make a dynamic set of images. You should start with research (planning, image collection, sketching) and then move on to the computer for production. You may use your own images, scanned images or images found via creative commons / archive collections or even web apps. Give yourself time to do the research and work with a concept you are passionate about. A few requirements:

• 3 final compositions will be 8 x 10 at 150 dpi or 300 dpi for prints

• Each composition should have at least 6 photographic elements remixed

• Final 3 images will be exported as jpegs and uploaded to the class dropbox before class on Sept. 19

Sept. 5 – Intro to project / demos / Studio Sept. 12 – Studio / instruction Sept. 19 – Critique – project is due in dropbox at the beginning of class.
