As well as jaw-dropping shopping and dining options, the tourist heartland of Tsim Sha Tsui is one of Hong Kong's most diverse and exhilarating locales. There is something for everyone here, from the bright lights of streets that never sleep to tranquil parks and architectural reminders of the colonial years, like the Clock Tower built in 1915 as part of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Terminus.

Page 4: F.4 English Project (2002-2003) Interested in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Named after the British governor who designed it, bustling Nathan Road was scorned as a white elephant and originally dubbed "Nathan's Folly". In recent decades, however, it has become celebrated as the "Golden Mile" because of the dazzling array of neon-decorated shops, hotels, restaurants and nightspots that flank the wide thoroughfare. The 13.6-hectare Kowloon Park stands on Nathan Road on the site of a former military barracks. Taking advantage of the park's well-wooded landscape is the open-air Sculpture Walk. Displays include striking works by local sculptors and a magnificent bronze statue by Scotland's Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. Other parkland attractions include a bird lake and aviary, a maze, Chinese gardens and a fine sports complex with an indoor Olympic-size swimming pool. In a corner of the park nestles the serene white-marbled Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre.

The construction of the Hong Kong Space Museum commenced in 1977. It is strategically located at the centre of Tsim Sha Tsui - the defunct terminus of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. Commissioned in October 1980, it was the first local planetarium for the popularization of astronomy and space science. The unique egg-shaped dome rendered the 8000-square-metre museum to be one of the most famous landmarks in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Space Museum comprises of two wings - east and west. The former, the planetarium's nucleus, has an egg-shaped dome structure. Beneath it are the Space Theatre, the Hall of Space Science, workshops and offices. The west wing houses the Hall of Astronomy, the Lecture Hall, the Gift Shop and offices.

Inside the Space Theatre, there is a hemispherical projection dome with a diameter of 23 metres. Boasting the first OMNIMAX film projector in the eastern hemisphere, Hong Kong Space Museum was also the first planetarium in the world to possess a fully automated control system at its Space Theatre. Each year, the Museum produces two multi-media planetarium shows and introduces the best foreign OMNIMAX films to Hong Kong.

Clock TowerClock Tower

F.4 English ProjectF.4 English Project(2002-2003)(2002-2003)

The old Clock Tower near the Star Ferry concourse at Tsim Sha Tsui is a landmark of the bygone era of the Age of Steam, when trains arrived here with passengers who weeks before had embarked from London on the world's longest railway journey. Their only relief from the clackety clack of iron wheels on the rails came shortly after departure, with the crossing of the English Channel by boat-train. From then on it was an experience of mind-numbing monotony as, with occasional changes of train and rail gauge, they headed east across Europe from Paris to Moscow.

Page 21: F.4 English Project (2002-2003) Interested in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Then came the transfer to the Trans-Siberian Railway and the vast and seemingly endlessly steppes of Mother Russia, the brief relief of arrival in Peiping, as the Imperial Chinese capital was then known, and at last the final leg southward through the verdant countryside of China to Hong Kong, and the joy of once more walking on terra firma as they left the station and checked their fob watches by the clocks on all four sides of the Tower. With its distinctive design in red brick and granite, the 45-metre Tower is a graceful reminder of those Colonial times. But over many years it had far greater significance for tens of millions of Chinese for whom the former terminus was the final stop on their rail journeys from villages in their homeland to new lives either in Hong Kong or by ship to distant destinations overseas. Now the site of the historic railway station is occupied by the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, its curving roof and futuristic features creating an unusual background to its solitary neighbour.

ExhibitionThe Museum building occupies an area of 17,500 square metres, with 8,000 square metres being used for exhibitions, including a 1,000 square metres Special Exhibition Gallery for staging changing thematic exhibitions and 8 Permanent Exhibition Galleries of about 7,000 square metres where a Permanent Exhibition, "The Hong Kong Story" is featured. The exhibition outlines the 400 million years of natural history and 6,000 years of historical development and cultural heritage of Hong Kong. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by a balanced mix of thematic exhibitions, which cover a broad spectrum of subjects, which are within the Museum's areas of interest but set in a wider context. Through these exhibitions, different facets of Hong Kong's history and heritage are addressed in greater details to supplement the Permanent Exhibition. Meanwhile, joint exhibitions with outside institutes have enhanced the cultural interflow between Hong Kong and neighbouring territories.

F.4 English ProjectF.4 English Project(2002-2003)(2002-2003)

We started doing our English project from 26th April to now. We went to Tsim Sha Tsui to interview tourists. I was very surprised because there had so little amounts of tourists because of SARS. In Tsim Sha Tsui, it was really funny that some people have golden yellow hair with deep blue eyes but they said that they are Hong Kong people when we wanted to interview them.

We have learned so many skill in this project, e.g. investigation skill, extracting information, design questionnaires, conduct interviews, search on the internet………..At last, all of we thought this project can make us to speak better in English.
