A sea of red. Ferraris home turf. It can only mean one thing. The Formula One circus is heading to the evocative Monza circuit for the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton summed it up perfectly this week by saying heading to Monza is like going back to Formula Ones roots. Its hard to find fault with his statement with the famous Italian circuit being one of the mainstays of Formula One since its first official season back in 1950.

Monza is a place where you can feel the history and the ghosts of the past. While it is easy to get all caught up in the history of the venue, it is important to mention that this weekends Grand Prix is arguably the most crucial for the locals, Ferrari, for some time.

Ferrari has been victorious at Monza 18 times but theyve never needed a result for Fernando Alonso more, as they try to halt Sebastian Vettels relentless run to an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.

However, the Prancing Horse will be boosted by the arrival of former Lotus F1 guru James Allison who officially took up the Chassis Technical Director role this week. The start of something perhaps, I guess we will have to wait and see.

Vettels domination at Spa two weeks ago certainly sent out a strong message to Ferrari and the rest of the teams, and Monza could just be the venue for a reaction.

In other news, Daniel Ricciardo will be sitting on the grid safe in the knowledge he will be replacing Mark Webber at Red Bull Racing next season, bringing an end to the first part of silly season.

While Ricciardo couldnt be happier, McLaren are in desperate need of a lift which appears unlikely to arrive. The iconic squad celebrated their 50th anniversary this week but Sporting Director Sam Michael said this week that podium finishes on merit are a dim possibility for the squad in the remaining races. Not what Bruce McLaren would want to hear.

With Grand Prix starting to run out, Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton need results and fast if they are to stop Vettel, thus providing an interesting context for this years blast around the ultra fast Monza.

  • Ricciardo at Red Bull: Huge for Australian motorsport

Its been Formula Ones worst kept secret. But its official as of next year daniel ricciardo will replace Mark webber at red Bull racing and he now knows its time to deliver.

The speculation as to who will partner Sebastian Vettel finally came to end on Tuesday when the official announcement the whole F1 world was expecting was released. While the news is huge and a dream come true for Ricciardo, its equally as important for Australian motorsport as a whole.

With Webber moving onto to pastures new in sportscars with Porsche, Ricciardo suddenly becomes the leading light in Australian motorsport on a global scale and a role model for the next wave of this nations aspiring F1 drivers.

Moving to a world championship winning team in Red Bull offers his first realistic opportunity to challenge the worlds elite and become Australias first world champion since Alan Jones in 1980.

    Round 12 - Monza I Cover Story

  • While talk of landing a F1 world title is premature at this stage, the move will see him come under intense scrutiny. Red Bull talent scout Helmut Marko has already stated just hours after the announcement that he expects Ricciardo to challenge Vettel by the halfway mark of 2014.

Pressure will mount on his shoulders over the next few months but Ricciardo is confident he can not only deliver but surprise too.

I feel very, very good at the moment and obviously theres a lot of excitement running through me, said 24-year-old Ricciardo.Since joining F1 in 2011, I hoped this would happen and over time the belief in me has grown; I had some good results and Red Bull has decided that this is it, so its a good time.

Next year Ill be with a Championship-winning team, arguably the best team, and will be expected to deliver. Im ready for that. Im not here to run around in tenth place, I want to get the best results for myself and the team. I would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do. It will be a great challenge to be up against Sebastian Vettel, Im looking forward to that.

Now Ricciardo has been confirmed at Red

Bull, his seat at Torro Rosso has become available triggering another wave of speculation.

It has been widely reported that Red Bull junior driver and Formula Renault 3.5 racer Antonio Felix da Costa is the favourite but Kiwi GP2 star Mitch Evans could be considered a dark horse for the role.

The Auckland ace, mentored by Webber, already has the GP3 title under his belt and has impressed during his maiden GP2 campaign, recording four podiums with the Arden squad. Admittedly GP2 is his most likely destination for 2014 but he could just be the next driver to follow in Ricciardos footsteps.

Id give anything to race for Torro Rosso, he told Speedcafe.com.Ive had a little bit of Red Bull sponsorship this year which has been great. We will see what happens. Obviously there are a few other drivers out there that could be in a fight for that position and we will just hang tight and see what happens.

    Round 12 - Monza I Cover Story

  • Ferrari: Success at Monza imperative on so many levels Without a win since May and trailing in the title race, this weekends Italian Grand Prix is arguably the Scuderias most important for some time as they bid to re-establish themselves as F1s powerhouse.

Unfortunately for F1s most successful team, the story of 2013 has followed a similar pattern to last year with Fernando Alonso once again out driving his car to keep himself on the tail of Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel in the title race.

It is fair to say at the beginning of the campaign there was renewed optimism that the Maranello squad had finally produced a car capable of taking the fight to Red Bull. But just two victories for Ferrari and Alonso from 11 races is simply not good enough compared to Vettels and Red Bulls five. The last win arriving at the Spanish Grand Prix in May.

The prancing horse prides itself on

delivering when it matters most in front of their tifosi at Monza, which is partly why they have recorded 18 victories since 1950, more than any other team at the venue.

This stands to reason even more this year as the team are currently floundering in the wake of Vettels charge to a fourth title. Ferrari is like a religion in Italy and the weight of expectation is huge thus piling the pressure on the team to not only succeed, but triumph on home soil too.

With Vettel and Red Bull scampering away yet again in the title race, there is only soo much a giant like Ferrari will take. Its been five years since the prancing horse claimed a title in Formula One with the 2008 Constructors crown, which is too long for the brand.

For Alonso and Stefano Domenicalis team a result at Monza this weekend is crucial for keeping their title aspirations alive and asserting themselves as one of F1s top dogs.

Heading into the weekend, Alonso is 46 points behind Vettel with Ferrari third in the constructors standings. While he admits the team have gone in the wrong direction since the start of the campaign, the Spaniard is optimistic and adamant the title race is still on, which will be music to most Italians ears.

    being touted as suitable replacements.

Massa has accrued 67 points to Alonsos 151 which is better than last season but one podium from 11 races is clearly not up to Ferraris high standards. Boss Domenicali is keen to offer Massa a new deal but only on the proviso his results improve which is why many eyes will be on the Brazilian this weekend, as he bids to save his Scuderia career.

My favourite choice would be, of course, to keep Felipe because Felipe is a very good guy - very dedicated to the team - and when you look around there are not so many drivers out there that you swap and they immediately deliver, Domenicali told the official Formula 1 website.

But, of course, we need good results from Felipe, so thats why we will not rush as we have to make the right decision for the team. As soon as we have made up our minds we will announce it officially to silence the rumours once and for all.

Monza could be the perfect pick me up for Massa as he has always managed to perform strongly in front of the tifosi, but there will certainly be intense scrutiny and pressure this weekend.

Whatever way you look at it, success at this years Italian Grand Prix is imperative for Ferrari. Whether it is their position as one of F1s powerhouses at stake, Alonsos title aspirations or the future driver line up of Formula Ones iconic brand.

It is still open. The best example is last year. I was leading with 41 points ahead of Sebastian after the Monza race and I arrived in Texas 15 points behind, so things can change, he said. Our hopes are to keep improving performance and try to repeat what happened last year the other way around. If you have a competitive car and you win four or five consecutive races, like Sebastian did last year in India, Japan, Singapore, you recover very quickly.

We won two of the five races and we were in a position to fight for the podium all the time. At that point, we were a very few points behind the leader, he said. Then there were some races in the championship where we went backwards in terms of a step in the car and we lost direction a little bit.

While this weekends race is vital for Alonso in terms of fighting for the title, it is equally as important in the opposite side of the garage for team mate Felipe Massa.

It feels like deja vu but as we enter the business end of the season for the second year in succession Massas position at the Scuderia is under threat. It was also at this point last season that he suddenly got his act together and results were forthcoming, prompting a 12 month extension of the Brazilians his contract.

However, this time the rumours surrounding his unsafe seat at the team are gathering pace with Lotus Kimi Raikkonen, Saubers Nico Hulkenberg and Force Indias Paul Di Resta all

rear wingWith the long straights forming a significant aspect of the Monza circuit layout - speeds of around 330km/h being attained during the course of a lap - minimising drag is an important consideration. For this reason, a Monza-only low drag and low downforce rear wing is produced. As the rear wing creates less drag that normal, the difference between DRS on and DRS off is less than at other circuits.

BrakesAfter Montreal, this is one of the heaviest circuits of the year for braking demands, with braking from the fastest part of the track (c 340km/h) to the slowest (c 75km/h) taking place for the Turn 1-2 chicane. Recent brake material developments mean that temperatures and wear have become less of a consideration than previously.

SuspensionThere are two low-speed chicanes (Turns 1-2 and 4-5) where the kerbs are used heavily, so a softer suspension setup with longer travel is preferable for these. However, there is also the higher speed, 3rd-4th gear Ascari chicane (Turns 8-9-10) where a stiffer setup with sharper change of direction is preferable due to its higher speed and lack of kerb usage.

    AutodRoMo NAzIoNAlE MoNzA

Turn 1The fastest part of the track, with speeds of around 340kmh, before braking hard for the slowest part of the circuit- the Rettifilo chicane which has a minimum speed of around 75km/h. The kerbs are used extensively here as drivers aim to find the shortest line through this tricky right- left combination.

Turn 2Good power delivery on exiting the chicane is essential as the drivers accelerate

    THE CAr

TyresDue to the higher speeds seen at Monza there may be some specific limitations on inflation pressures and camber settings. This is not uncommon for Monza and is just another factor in making this circuit such a unique challenge.

Front wingJust as for the rear wing, a bespoke low drag and low downforce front wing is produced for Monza. This really is the home of speed!

EngineMonza is very much a power circuit, with its long straights meaning that a significant portion of the lap is spent at full throttle. Its not just all out power thats required however, with power delivery exiting the corners on to the straights also important.

    THE CIrCuIT

hard through Curva Biassono; a good slipstreaming opportunity heading into the next complex.

Turns 4-5Heavy kerb usage through the Turn 4-5 chicane, which the cars approach at 330km/h before braking down to around 120km/h.

Turns 6-7The Lesmo curves are approached at over 260km/h, with a minumum corner speed of around 180km/h in Lesmo 2. Good car control is required though this trick double right-hander due to the lower than optimum levels of downforce used at this circuit.

Turns 8-10Variante Ascari is a fast third and fourth gear chicane, but unlike the previous chicanes around the track there is no kerb usage. The cars approach this complex at around 330km/h with a minimum speed of around 170km/h in the first left hand turn; a spectacular part of the circuit where bravery from the drivers is very much rewarded.

Turn 11The second fastest part of the track with around 335km/h reached before braking to around 215km/h at the slowest part of the corner its crucial to stay close to the car ahead through Parabolica to be positioned for a pass on the following straight.

    Round 12 - Monza I track details

  • Pressure is certainly mounting on the teams trying to reel in Red Bull but judging on their form at Spa you have to label Vettel among the favourites to shine at Monza.

Monza hasnt been a happy hunting ground for Red Bull as they suffered a double retirement last year and their only victory coming in 2011. The Adrian Newey designed cars have often lacked top end speed thus rendering the high speed venues of Monza and Spa difficult races for the team.

But this year the squad showed blistering top end speed at Spa which should leave the F1 paddock quaking in their boots this weekend. Another Vettel win would severely dent if not realistically spell the

    The Bagman says...

2013 Formula 1 World Championship Entry List

end of the title race for Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

Ferrari traditionally up their game for their home round in front of their adoring tifosi and they will need to do this again this weekend. Rest assured the Maranello firm will have been working hard in the background for sometime to ensure they will be on form. Alonso and Felipe Massa were strong throughout last years race finishing third and fourth and it would be a foolish to bet against them issuing a response to Red Bull this weekend.

Monzas high speed straights and tight chicanes lend themselves to cars good on top end speed and brakes which should be ideal for Mercedes. The squad have proved time and time again in qualifying that

they have the quickest car in F1 right now. Hamilton and Nico Rosberg know they will have a good chance of taking the win but it will once again come down to how severe Monza will be on their tyres.

After suffering retirement at Spa, Raikkonen and Lotus will be eager to bounce back and they cannot be ruled out either, but whether the car has the pace to deal with Monza is unknown.

The midfield is likely to be dominated by McLaren and Force India. The latter have always enjoyed the Italian Grand Prix with their car ideally set up for the fast straights. While Sauber were the surprise last year, it seems unlikely they will shine in 2014, which could open up an opportunity for Torro Rosso.
