EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTES

The confidence of the V.C.T.A. and i t s Organising Cum- mittce in being able to attract shcotcrs to Echuca for the Trap Karionals was certainly justifled by the numbers attending.

The many shooters were not let down either as the V.C.T.A. and Echuca Gun Club had every thin^ in - readiness.

Beine mv first TraD Nationals I had heard the ecod - thingsUand"the bad thGgs to possibly expect.

Well. the m d certainlv out-weiehed the bad. which is as ~ ~ . ~ ~ . ~~~- -- - ~~ ~ ~ ~ " .7 ~~ . ~ ~~~

it always should be. I believe that all shooters were more than satisfied with what had bccn organiscd for theln. Cer- tainly no e om plaints ac all regarding food and drink. What a hard act to follow.

Tournament Director, Robert McDonald and his wiUing and capable officials were kept under constant pressure and as the days went by their ability to perform was put to the test and to their credit they were not found wanting.

On behslf of the sport we must thank those who gave of their time and expertise that helped to make the 1986 Championships one of the best yet.

Special thanks to Ray McKenzie, President of the Echuca Gun Club who made certain that the Club played its part and also the members of the V.C.T.A. Organising Committee for their many months of involvement leading up to the Nationals which proved to be an outstanding - success.

1986 NATIONAL T C MPIONSHIPS

Conducted at the Echuca Gun Club. the Trap Nationals left no doubt in ihcminds of those who attendci, and there were many, chat the sport of Clay Targct Shwting is alive and well.

The Echuca Gun Club members and the many workers that had assisted them in the preparation of the grounds can only be commended for the results that they achieved.

The weather, apart fmm maybe one gusty day, was almost as if "tailored to measure" and therefore no excuses could be accepted for poor scores.

With record numbers arriving for the pre-Nationals competition the atmosphere that prevailed was more than stimulating and so all was in readiness for what was going to be a great shooting carnival.

COACHING; DIRECTOR

"Tinnitus Auriurn", what is that, I hear you say with your hand cupped around your ear so you can hear me? Tinnitus is a continual ringing in the ears, it goes on night and day, it never stops. I have good friends in the shooting fraternity who suffer from this complaint, there is no cure. They are people who, in their early shooting careers, did not use ear protection. Tinnitus is caused by the destruc- tion of the hair cells in the mid ear by loud percussion such as that from the shot gun. The good news is that it can be prevented, as can deafness, by using protective ear muffs and/or plugs. My friendly ear specialist tells me that muffs are by far the best protection, but plugs are vastly better than nothing. The muffs prevent absorption of the percus- sion through the bone at the back of the ear, as well as that penetrating the arum. Why not wear both? Newcomers to our sport should be advised to equip themselves with pro- per ear protection as soon as they purchase their gun. Even without the ringing or whistling in the ear, any loss of bearing is a tragedy.

The coaching fraternity have to be careful, standing as often as they do at the rear of the shooter, where the per- cussion is at its greatest. It is easy to forget your muffs if you are not shooting yourself, so, when you leave home on the way to a shoot, think to yourself, have I got my muPfs. my gun, etc? I am just back from the down the line Nationals in

Echuca. The standard of shooting was exceptionally high. For the interest of those who did not attend, the Australian Double Barrel Championship saw some of Australia's best known shooters shooting off. There was the beautifully simple style of Doug Smith from Queensland. J.W. Smith of N.S.W. with his gun held high on the shoulder, the copy- hook style of Stan Collins of Victoria, the forward leaning determined, wide legged style of Sperry Marshall of Tasmania and the aggressive competitive style of Bill nes. Congratulations to Bill on winning the event. The shooting went on until dark and was started again next morning. When this happens it is difficult to regain momentum and concentration. Bill is strong physically, has natural ability

from all over Australia. With such a good nitcndmnce tht Echuca Nrrtiurlals wcrc a succcss. lkey reminded rnc agnln of what a great sport we have. Not many other sports could attract such a roll up of young, old, male and female com- petitors, all obviously enjoying themselves. I don't think we as clay shooters blow our trumpet enough, or go out of our way to encourage new membership. Clay shooting is a sport that provides stimulation, physical exercise in the fresh air and great social interaction. It can be enjoyed for a lifetime. I can think of people in their 80s and 90s shooting well. Junior shooting at the Nationals was in- credible, the standard seems to be getting higher each year.

Bring your friends to try our sport, introduce them to your club coach. who will make sure they don't go away feeling that the sport is too hard or that they have made a fool of themselves. Not only will you be doing them a favour, but yourself. The more members we have the cheaper the sport is for all.

John Harris, the Coaching Director from Western Australia, has resigned due to workload. Many thanks John for your efforts. John's position has been taken by Murray Alexander of Perth. Murray has been in the coaching scheme since its inception and is well known for his involvement in coaching in Western Australia. Murray has coached the Police team, a Forces team, as well as the usual coaching that is done by Z n e Coachcs. W.A. and the Australian Coaching Counoil are lucky to have such an ex- perienced coach as State Coaching Director.

The International Shooting Committee has a new member, David Menck of N.S.W. David replaced Bob Buchan of Victoria, who has served the international com- mittee in several capacities, including chairman. Bob will continue to hold the position as A.C.T.A. delegate to the Australian Shooting Association until November. David Menck will be known to many I.S.U. shooters through his newsletter of I.S.U. events and results.

Finally, many thanks to the Southern Gun Club for their hospitality to the National President. Ray Holtfreter, W.A. Coaching Director. Murray Alexander and Executive Member, Tim Catling and myself, Southern President Bob Rossiter and club members' friendliness, and the good shooting enjoyed by all, typifies for me what our sport is ahout.

Good shooting, (with your muffs on). PETER QUIRE.

SUCCESSFUL COACHING SEMINAR

A coaching seminar was held at Gyrnpie Gun Club on March 15. where a total of 65 novices were coachedfor the day.

Mr. Martin Gough (Zone Coach) and Mr. Gerry Chizzotti (Referee Examiner) kindly came up from Brisbane to conduct the seminar. After an informative lecture on safe handling of firearms. Martin Gough showed the correct method of gun mounting and stance etc.

The eager novices were then shown to the traps to have a go, under the expert supervision of Martin and Gerry.

A great day was had by all and my thanks to Martin. Gerry, Winchester and other registered shooters who assisted on the day.

Both junior shooters were presented with their award by N.S.W. State Secretary, Mrs Jenny Burt, at the Echuca Trap Nationals.

COMMITTEE REPORT - APRIL 1986

A lengthy meeting of the Executive took place at Echuca on Friday, April 11, commencing at Sam and continuing for, other than a short break for morning tea and lunch, the meeting eventually concluded at 6.40pm.

Many items were raised for discussion by members representing their State Associations. I a m pleased to be able to provide a summary of some of the decisions reach- ed, all of which have been made with the best interest of shooters in mind at all times.

- CARTRIDGE SALES AT NATIONALS

The procedure adopted at the Trap Nationals at Echuca will be continued. Brand name cartridges will be made available for competitors and sold by the accredited representatives of the supplier.

ASIAN CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING FEDERATION A decision will be reached by the General Assembly of

the A.C.P.S.F. in Bangkok on May 1, as to whether or not Australia is to be admitted to the Federation as a full member.

awards to perpetual awards at the Olympic Disciplines was approved.

DRESS STANDARDS ~ ~

Discussion on the Standard of dress whilst competing and at o resent at ions was discussed. This has been covered elsewhere in the C.T.S.N.

Many other items were discussed without being for- mulated. These will come to the fore following further in- vestigation as to their relative merits.

Alan J. Maher Executive Director.

BRISBANE GUN CLUB - 2 DAY SKEET SH0C)T

All the local Skeet shooters and a very pleasing roll up from many other clubs attended the Brisbane Gun Club's 2-day Skeet shoot on April 19 and 20. The club extends its thanks to the strong contingent of shooters from south of the border and to the Queensland shooters who attended from as far away as Mt Isa, Charleville and Rockhampton. The first event on Saturday morning was the Stevens & Sons trophy event. The club thanks Bill Stevens for his continuing support again this year, not just for this event, but also for his kind donation of a Winchester Com- memorative Rifle as our High Gun trophy for this year's shooting. Ray Porter won the 'AA' trophy after a handful of shooters dropped out early in the shoot off. After having shot 49's to participate, club captain Ran Wells won 'A' grade fmm Col Forest and Garry Redmond with a 63/63. Mick McGill all the way from Mt Isa the 'B' grade with 48/50 and Toowwmba club president David Moon 'C' grade.

Event 2, the Chandlers Trophy Event. Once again many thanks to Kev Reedman on behalf of Chandlers Electrical stores. Kev is a very keen shooter and a very generous donor, not only for this shoot, but all our Skeet shoots through the year. (Also congratulations go to Kevfor afine 50 in the H'cap event).

Ray Melville; no stranger to a Skeet field, ran out winner in 'AA' with 86/87. John Porter won 'A' grade with 62/62 and this was the start of a 203 break for John. Joe Box from the Gold Coast shot a nice 49 to win 'B' grade, and once again David Moon the 'C' grade. The "Porter- Stevens" Skeet shield was also run on this event. And the Gold Coast won this keenly contested shield from a count- back with Brisbane with 2431250. (Only 5 to 1 next time Wolfman). At the end of the day, Garry Redmond was look- ing good for the High Gun with 100/100 but unfortunately Garry was admitted to hospital after the shoot and was kept in through Sunday. Not a bad effort to shoot 100 under the pain he was obviously in.

First up Sur~day was the Winchester H'cap event. Once again a kind word for our sponsor Winchester Aust. Bob Dupuy with his boys were present again this year with a case of shells and silver cups for a 3 man team competition in conjunction with this event. Thanks again for your sup- port, Bob.

A s mentioned earlier, this was all John Porter. John didn't need any handicap as he shot 126 straight through this event to take 1st place from John Withers with Mick McGill third. The 3 man team winners were Max Barton, John Withers and Karl Nasarenko.

The final event, the City of Brisbane Championship. Ray Melville was far too good here to win the championship and 'AN Jim Baker won 'A' grade, Ces Herbert the 'B' grade, while new Bqsbane shooter Bill Sangster won his first major trophy by taking out 'C' grade with 45/50. After all this there were 4 shooters on 1361200 to shoot off for the High Gun. John Porter, Ray Porter. Ray Melville and Kel Madsen. The most impressive trophy on the table was a beautiful tapestry Keys wife Kirsten spent many, many hours doing. This was the High Gun trophy and I can assure you it was a very papular result when Kel won this himself after Ray Melville let a low house 5 get away in the second shoot off round. Congratulations to Kel for a fine effort considering he was the leading hand in running the shoot as well. Of course no shoot is possible without the help in the office, and in the kitchen. For those chores we must thank Dawn Reedman. Kirsten Madsen and ~~~- -~

Margarec Bakcr. Also thanks to Jean Clarkc, \rife oP well known shooter Reg Clarke, for your assistance as wrU. We hope to run another %day shoot later this year. 80 watch the C.T.S.N. for dates.

AROUND THE T S With LAURIE CONNORS

After returning homc Prom what one might call an ex- tended "Shooters Jaunt" of Queensland gun clubs, as well as takrnz in our very successful South Pacrfic and Na- tional -pic ~iscipline Championships, hosted at Brisbane Gun Club, to end the trip, one was to realise our next maior shootine event. the National Trav Chamuion- ahin to Ge run at ~ & u c a . was not far off. ~ ~ " - ~ - . b"; many who attended and competed I have s&loken with. complimented those responsible in 0rgaNsing and making the event possible. Probably the ones who deserve some thought and gratitude are the small band of workers who turned up to the Eohuoa Gun Club working bees, to make sure the ground and facilities were ready and oapable of taking the 872 shooters who competed in the nine event program, over six days of tournament, from start to finish. It was pressure at its best from behind the scenes for all running the show, and no doubt many of those involved are glad it is all over. Let's extend a nod of appreciation show- ing our gratitude to all concerned. Their job was well done, and all deserve credit for their oontribution to the Na- tional's overall success. Also. I feel when the final financial result arrives, it will prove to those responsible, the project for the betterment of our sport, was well worthwhile. Whilst one can write of all the highlights pertaining to the event, I also feel some of the "lowlights" should be men- tioned. If they have not already done so, would those responsible for removing a banner from the side of a con- tainer, please return same. For your information, should it not be returned, it will be necessary for it to be replaced. This will cost some $400, and I believe future junior spon- sorship will suffer and miss out on the $400 needed to replace the banner. "THINK ABOUT I T . Also, when an event such as this is run, quite a number of people con- tribute items to make things easier on the club's finances, and a little more comfortable for patrons and workers alike. So if you happened to souvenir the umbrellas used to proteot the referee and scorer against inolernent weather, or the shooter's shelter tent, Bfter the completion of the Nationals, you have taken artioles Echuoa Gun Club have to replace to the& owners. All you have done is loaded Eohuca Gun Club with embarrassment and an m- necessary expense. Should you know their whereabouts drop them hack, the club would appreciate their return.

Lastly, there is something about attending our Na- tionals, that no other shooting tournament seems able to offer. That is the pleasure of seeing our top shots in action and meeting of many shooters one has got to know over the years. They were there from all over Australia, New Zealand and even America. It was great to once again bid you all "GOOD DAY". God willing we will meet again at the Brisbane Nationals next gear.

Because of development theywere forc- ed to shift from their original site. They feature three D.T.L. layouts, lights for night shooting, as wellas neat of- fice space and club rooms. Although the organisers were a little disappointed with the numbers, they were able to at- tract forty competitors. Amongst them were visiting shooters from Victoria. South Australia and Tasmania. Among the Tasmanians were Tasmanian Executive members. Stewart Browning and Mrs Kaye Woods. Friday, April 18,1986. A meeting of interested Viotorian clubs and shooters was held in Bendigo. The purpose of the meeting was to see if there was a possibility of establishing . Olympic discipline shooting in the country areas of Vic- toria. Clubs in attendance were Geelone. Sebastaml. ~ ~ -~~~ -. ~~~ ~ . ~ . Maryborough. Bendigo and Echuca. The meeting olosed with Bendigo having to confirm it had the area and was able to accept the responsibility of installing this disoiuline. Riverina Zone Seoretary and Delegate, Lola Charles had to shoot off to gain the 3rd place in the Double Barrel.

Tom Turner (jnr) (Cessnook) and Craig Tilley (Sydney) along with the eventual overall winner of the Junior Dou- ble Barrel, Brett Dunston all posted 50150. Tilley being placed 3rd and Turner 2nd after the shoot off.

Michael DiamonCs performance in the Teams competi- tion will be remembered for a long time. With only 5 points down, he gained selection in the 30 member International Team and the 5-member Junior Team, which necessitated him shooting 100 targets point score for the Open Team (his score - 2971300) and then backing up approximately 20 minutes later for afurther 100 target point soore for the Junior Team (his score - 3001300).

Congratulations also to Arthur Turner (Dubbo) on winn- ing the Australian Single Barrel Championship.

New South Wales shooters to make the International Team were Arthur Turner, "Pud" Burgess. J.W. Smith, Michael Diamond, Warren Charlton and Dong Ellis.

The Junior team of 5 comprises two from N.S.W. - Michael Diamond and Tom Turner (jnr). Lola Charles was the only lady from N.S.W. to make the Ladies Team.

RULES How's this for a beauty?? Recently I visited a Club (as State President) and

tendered my card on nominating. The programs consisted of common mark and handicap events and, on completion of shooting, I collected my card and found my scores were not recorded.

I requested the Secretary to enter my scores and was told, "We don't worry about the rules and don't mark any cards - you can shoot here and never receive a handicap".

I left the club totally disgusted and will not be returning -I realise that some people do not like the rules but, like them or not, they are the rules and we must all accept them. If all clubs adopted the attitude of the above club and ignored or created their own version of the rules, what a hell of a mess the Clay Target Sport would be in.

Club Executives -we are sportsmen so let's aot respon- sibly and operate within the rules - at least be fair enough to give them a try.

OLYMPIC DISCIPLINE NOTES

Havinp now com~leted over half of the New South Wales 0lvmoic-~iscioline Trainine Sauad elimination series for - ~ " . - . 108G. the cornpctition for positions in thc rraining squads. and the rornpctition in gerlernl is the bcst cvcr secn in the state.

Attendances at all I.S.U. shoots have been extremely good, not only for training squad eliminations but club shoots as well. Without exception, every elimination held so far this pear has seenin excess of 30 competitors for the Olympic Trap event, and although numbers are not quite so good for the I.S.U. Skeet, there have been good atten- dances there also. This must surely indicate the growing interest in Olympic Discipline shooting in New South ws1ec; . . -. - -.

HopcPully, the old Peelings that Olympic Trap and I.S.U. Skcct are too hard, are slowly vanishing, and arc now bc. ing replaced by the need of many to participate in a more challenging discipline.

The scores at both Olympic Trap and I.S.U. Skeet are both constantly on the improve. Today, a higher percen- tage of shooters compete in A Grade than any other grade, and this is the case in both Olympic Trap and I.S.U. Skeet. As more com~etitions are held and the number of corn- ~~. ~~~-~ - ~~ . petitors riscs. so are tlle scorcs. It wasn't chat long ago when a scorcaround 180 200would takcout thcor~erall for the weekend bur not anymore. Today it would bc flat ro take out B grade.

Amongst the newcomers filtering into the Olympic Discipline competitions it is extremely pleasing to see quite a few very promising juniors mixed with the many now taking up the challenge. Michael Diamond, Fillipo Petriella. Mark Barlin and others are ~erformine well at - Olympic Trap whilst Mark Agar shows great potential at I.S.U. Skeet.

TRAINING SQUAD ELIMINATION SERIES With only the Griffith, Taree Wingham and Illawarra

eliminations still to be held, the race for positions in the Olympic Trap Squad still sees many in with a chance if they mmpete at all three of the remaining eliminations. John Maxwell still leads the field from Terry Rumbel but there isn't-much in it. Robert Thompson, Cliff Bailey, Terry Budd and John Fryer are all performing well after the best three of five eliminations:

John Maxwell 195 194 194 97.2% Terry Rumbel 191 187 196 95.8% Rob Thompson 189 192 188 94.8% Cliff Bailey 186 187 192 94.2% John Fryer 182 190 190 93.7% Terry Budd 185 189 189 93.8% Michael Diamond tirn) 186 178 192 92.7% Victor Burgess 184 188 184 92.7% Kevin Perkins 175* 193 185 92.2% Fillip Petriella 0 4 177 190 182 91.5%

The positions in the I.S.U. Skeet after five eliminations are also very wide open with a total of sixteen competitors still in with a chance of filling the six positions.

Two competitors, one in each discipline, have both attended each of the eliminations held so far. They are Col Burt in I.S.U. Skeet and Victor Burgess in Olympic Trap. For their effort they both deserve to fill a position in next year's training squad.

WEST WYALONG ELIMINATION The Anzac Day long weekend once again saw a g W d

attendance for an elimination. This time at West Wyalong. The majority of leaders in the eliminstion series were

absent, but this was not indicated by the scores. Once again Sydney 14 year old, Michael Diamond, proved

he will be a force to be reckoned with in the future by t a g the overall honours in the Olympic Trap event with an overall score of 1921200, only one target ahead of Victorian Bill Iles with Robert Thompson from Cobar third overall on 1881200.

The I.S.U. Skeet event went to anewcomer to our band of enthusiasts, Jerry Cole of Wakehurst Club in Sydney. Promising junior Mark Agar recorded the second top score with Col Burt only one target further back.

Another first occurred that night when the Committee of the W.A. Gun Club hosted their first Cabaret Night in the magnificent function area of the Clubhouse. The function was verv well attended and the hall was naoked and judging by the look of some of the revellers th i next day, a g o 4 time was had by all.

On the Sunday the W.A. Gun Club held the prestigious Newton Thomas 100 Skeet competition, which was ably won by Clem Bertini with a score of 991100.

One week later the Esperance Bay Gun Club held their Easter Carnival. Unfortunately I was unable to be present, but was pleased that my Vice President, John Fissioli, was there and shooting well as usual as he won the State Mixed Targets event. Well shot John. The Commonwealth Single Barrel was very well won by David Kevill. John's report shows me that the shoot was well attended, and as always the Esperance Club can be congratulated on a well run Carnival.

As busy as I am, it is nice to shoot at my own Club. Bunbury, from time to time. On Saturday 12 April the Bunbury Clay Target Club held its 50 Skeet Club Championship, which was expertly won by the Club Vice President, Grant Hyder, with the only possible score 50150.

On Sunday 13 April I had the pleasure the company of many of Zone 6 shooters at the Boyup Bmok Club's opening shoot for 1986. My congratulations go to the Club for the way they processed a big field over one lay-out for 65 targets without a hitch. I must mention that in the last event (25 Trap hlcap) a young shooter, Carl Kuipe showed us all with the only possible 25/25. Well done.

In closing, please do not forget to send me items of interest, so that other shooters in this Big State may know what is going on around the Clubs.

Good Shooting. Ross Silvester

GUIDELINES FOR REFEREES

TRAP & SKEET 1. Read shooters' names from squad sheets and ensure

competitors are on correct tracks and marks. For safety reasons ask all shooters to check for obstruc- tions in barrels.

2. The Referee must stand where he has a olear view of targets and competitors, preferably between lanes 2 and 3 , approximately 2met res behind the competitor's shooting mark. If there is excessive bac&mund noise, &e Referee may move between lanes 2 and 4 in order to hear the competitors call so as to give all competitors equity of competition.

3. Describe the event and procedure for conduct of the event, e.g. "25 Target Single Barrel Championship. shot from 15 metres, 13 targets from trap 1 and 12 targets from trap 2."

4. The Referee should ask his scorer to stand close enough to him, so that the Referee can see the score sheet, and the scorer can observe the target as a check Referee.

5. Target to be shown by Referees. (a) when the competitors are all in position, the

Referee must release a target for number 1 shooter to look at on his call. (i) At the beginning of all events. (ii) After any breakdown or delay. (iii) At the commencement of all shoot-offs. (iv) On each trap used for a shoot-off. (v) After any break for shells eto. during a shoot-

Off. (vi) If a competitor received two broken targets in

a row, the Referee should ask the competitor "Would you like to see a target."

@) If it is a six man squad and there is to be 1 target per shooter eye-opener, number 6 shooter must move up to take the first target, but he must still be shown a target, on his call, before he shoots at his eye-opener target.

AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS- JUNE 1986

6. The Referee must at all times release the target immediately on the competitor's call.

7. The Referee must clearly call the result thus: one, lost, three, two, no target, as appropriate.

8. Lost targets must be called immediately, and the Referee can change his decision if the target breaks before it hits the ground. The Referee is to see that the next shooter does not close his gun until the result of the previous shot has been called, and should not release the next target if the competitor oalls before the result has been called. Refer Rule 1.1E.

9. At all times ensure that no competitor leaves a cartridge(.) in his gun, after a red signal from the traphouse (breakdown etc) and when moving from lane 5 to lane 1, or anytime competitors or other personnel are in front of him.

10. The Referee must speak to a shooter immediately on any breach of the safety rules. If the rules of etiquette are broken, the Referee should speak to the shooter concerned after the squad has finished, depending on circumstances.

11. Providing a shooter does not obstruct the Referee in the execution of his duties, the shooter may walk in front of the Rderee when changing from lanes 1 to 5.

12. In Single Barrel competition the Referee must ensure that the second barrel in Double Barrel guns remains clear.

13. The Referee must not restore a target if the competitor opens his gun after a mslfunction.

14. In the case of a malfunction the Referee shall firstly check the safety catch is not in the on position, he shall then check that the action is closed, enquire of the competitor how the action operates, i.e. whether mechanical, or inertia triggers, and then test fire the gun once only. If the shooter is using a release trigger gun, the Referee will ask the shooter to test fire the g u n once only. Under no circumstances will the Referee ntternnt to test fire it in this case.

~~

r 5. The Referee should be mindful of the rule reeardinz .......-.---- ~ - squad members disturbing the competitor sh&tmg.

16. A RePcree will not call no target to deny a shooter the opporrunity 10 shoot at a whole target. unless a safety hazard exists.

17. Interpretation of refusal rule: A shooter may refuse to shoot at any target which he considers to be too high, too low, too wide, too quickly released, too slowly released, at any target he considers to be illegal. There is no limit to the number of targets the shooter may refuse as long as the Referee agrees with the reasons. Obviously, if too many targets are refused for illegality, the Referee must inspect the trap, find the oause; the correct it. If the Referee does not consider that the target refused is illegal, he will ask the shooter why he refused the target. If the Referee is not satisfied with the reason, he will tell the shooter. He will also state that any further targets which are refused, and are considered by the Referee to be legal, will be scored "lost target". If the above situation seems likely to arise, it is preferable that a third party, qualified if possible. adjudicates subsequent refusals. The foregoing procedure in no way discriminates against Referees using their judgement, it is meant to assist in equity of competition. A major point missed by older style Referees is that although a shooter may refuse to shoot at an illegal target, he is equally entitled to accept an illegal target, and shoot at it. However, if he shoots at, and misses an illegal target, the only decision open to the Referee is "lost target". Similarly, if he hits it, "three", "two", or "one" as the case may be is the only decision to be given. A RePeree should not call "No Target" for a fast or slow released target nor if the target seems to him to be too high, too low, or too wide. "No Target" should only be called in the case of a broken target, a pair of

AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS

targets emerging instead of a single (or vice versa), or where a safety hazard exists if a shooter elects to shoot at the tareet. The Shooter m;st be the only person to deoide if the target is acceptable to him. Many older style Referees consider that this rule takes away too many of their decision-making powers. The fact is that the rule puts the decision whether to shoot or not with the sole person who should have to decide - the shooter conc&ned. The Referee must leave the "No Target" decision where it belongs - with the shooter. If the shooter breaks the target, illegal or not, he is credited with it. if he misses an illegal target, he must equally accept the "lost target" decision. Referees are to ensure that "R" for refusal is entered on scorecards. Every refusal must be called either "No Target" or "lost target" by the Referee.

18. The Referee is to see that all competitors remain as a squad until the last shooter has finished.

19. At the completion of each visit to a trap, the Referee must say, "unload your gun^ and check your scores."

20. In Skeet, the Referee is to ensure that the competitor's feet are within the 1 metre square at each station.

21. The Referee should take up a position a s recommended for each station.

W.A.G.C. NE ON THOMAS PERPETUAL

TllROPIPTI The West Australian Gun Club conducted their 100

skeet 3. N. Thomas Perpetual Trophy shoot on the 23rd of March at the Whiteman Park shooting complex. Sixty one shooters attended to enjoy the fine and warm weather conditions and some good shooting, which was somewhat surprising to many shooters considering they had attended a cabaret the previous night. Others may have used this as an excuse for the occasional lost target.

The cabaret, which was held by the W.A.G.C.. was the first major function, not inoluding shooting events, to be held at the complex sinoe the oompletion of the clay target facilities at Whiteman Park. (Faciliities can only be described as complete as they are generally functional. There is still much to be done in the grounds.) The success of this social event ensures that there will be other such gatherings organised by the club in the near future.

Cabaret photograph from L. to R. are Eyvonne and Anita Franklin, Robin and Sue Bailey and Myra Bailey.

AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET ASSOCIATION

The secretary, PI8858 addless all correspondence lo EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

State Associations, PO @ox 1% Blackburn vlc 3130 Australla

(as addressed) Telephone (03) 8782533 (2 lines)

I have been instrutted to write to each State Association concerning the standard of dress that is worn by shooters while competing.

Obviously our sport is not a dress up sport in the true sense of the word, neither however should it be one of dress down.

One only has to look around the grounds to see what is being referred to. Visitors to the club should be confronted with an image of at the least what is considered to be reasonably acceptable dress and not as is often the case, the reverse.

In the main, most shooters are aware of their appearance both while competing and viewing, these are not the shooters that provide our overall image. We always tend to remember what are the "bad aspectsu rather than the good, therefore we must at all times, for the good of our Sport be aware of our presentation.

If you can assist in raising our standard of dress then you will be making a fine contribution. Insist that shooters are reasonably well attired for presentations and particularly for photographs as these have lasting effects that can be done without.

Don't join them, the few that drag our standards down, this is taking the easy wayout. Make them instead, lift their standards and join you the majority.

Our ima~e will improve at all levels, local and International where strangely enough we do have problems that can be rectified.

We hope for the overall good intentions of the proponents of this request for better standards of dress, that the message does not fall upon deaf ears, if so then we have resisted the opportunity to lift our standards and instead have taken the easy way out by joining the minority where, upon reflection we have all lost.

We trust that you wil; ;dpport the move to improve our image at all levels.

Yours sincerely,

Executive Director
