“Our Mission is to grow disciples of Jesus Christ by studying and living the Word.”

Last year our children’s Sunday School offering benefited the Cardon’s Children’s Medical Center. This spring we would like it to go towards the remodel of the Missions Center. The Missions Center helps feed families with children, so we felt this was an appropriate distribu on of funds. So far we have collected $50.00, and our goal by the end of March is $100.00. Please encourage your child or student to share some of their allowance or if they don’t receive an allowance, you can give them some money to bring in with an explana on of why it’s important.

W ’ W 1‐D R The registra on deadline for the Retreat is Sunday, February 5, so we can provide the number of a endees to the resort catering department.

The theme this year is Sweet Life Café with the date set for Saturday, February 11 from 8:30am—3:30pm at the Red Mountain Ranch Resort in Mesa.

These Retreats are so meaningful to a endees! It’s a wonderful chance to fellowship, worship and refresh your spirit. The Retreat cost is $80 which covers a con nental breakfast, lunch and all retreat materials. Please contact Katharine if the cost is prohibi ve and we’ll work something out. If you are a person who can sponsor someone, we appreciate dona ons.

As always, please invite a friend. On the next page is a registra on card for the Retreat and payment in full of $80 is required. Registra on cards will also be in the lobbies of either building and in the Church Office.

Our children's outreach ministry resumed Saturday, January 7 a er a 2‐week holiday break. It was exci ng to see the children, and many of them were wearing new clothes or shoes they received from the Angel

Tree Christmas Program. We meet at Avalon School located at 1045 S. San Marcos Dr. in Apache Junc on on Saturday mornings from 9:45am—11:45am and upcoming mee ng dates are Feb. 4, 11, 18, March 4, 11, 18, April 1, 8, 15 and 22.

Our Bible lessons through February will be focused on the life of Jesus, His childhood and young adulthood and as He steps out in faith to start His ministry. The children divide into smaller groups for table lessons, and many of them are eager to learn more about God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit. We always have the Bible nearby for reference and to answer ques ons.

We are so happy to see many of our volunteer Shepherds rejoining us as they return to Arizona, and we always welcome newcomers! A special thanks goes to all of our Church family who con nue to pray for Sidewalk and have donated items or monetary gi s to Sidewalk. We are so grateful to have a wonderful team of volunteer "Shepherds" who keep this ministry thriving!

We have many opportuni es within our ministry, and you can make a tremendous difference in a child's life! We invite you to learn more about how to become a Sidewalk volunteer. All volunteers must undergo a background check. To learn more about how you can serve in this important outreach ministry, please call Sherry Hussein at (480)529‐9621.

We don’t o en emphasize the children bringing an offering to Sunday School, however, it is a good spiritual discipline for kids to prac ce even at a young age. As parents you can help in explaining that giving money is another way to honor and praise God. The amount is not important, but the heart

that desires to give is… even a few cents.

Many of you will recall our basket Silent Auc on from the last two years, the proceeds of which have gone to the Easter offering. The entries grew exponen ally from the first year and it was tons of fun to see the crea vity of

the donors. The proceeds will again benefit the 2017 Easter Offering, which at this wri ng has not yet been chosen. This year’s Silent Auc on will run from Sunday March 12th un l the Spring Eggstravaganza on April 9th. If you would like to make up a basket for this year’s Silent Auc on, here’s what you need to do:

Find a fun container – basket, bucket, quilted bag, diaper bag, backpack, etc., and fill it with appropriate items. For example, last year we had: a basket with dog treats; a jewelry package; a wooden cradle with a baby quilt, books and toys; an Italian dinner basket; a cookie bouquet, just to name a few. You may even be able to offer a boat ride or a cabin to use for a week, which you can include in your “package.” Groups such as Bible Banter, CODA, and Stephen Ministry even had entries! Use your imagina on! (Our  only  request  is  that  these crea ons not include alcohol.)

Compete a registra on form (will be available the first Sunday in February) for the item you are dona ng with the approximate value a ached. The forms will be available in the Church Office, the Welcome Center and in the Educa on Building.

Have the basket completed and submi ed to Katharine Keller no later than Tuesday, March 7th, so that the baskets can be organized. If there is anything that perhaps may be perishable, please include a picture so people know what is supposed to go in the basket.

If you wish to donate money, someone will create a basket on your behalf. If you have any ques ons, please contact Katharine Keller in the church office. The baskets will be displayed in the Narthex beginning March 12th so that people can bid on these marvelous baskets all month, with the final bidding on April 9th.

Country News from Bob Would you like to add a li le more fun and joy to 2017? It’s simple. Just mark your calendar to remind you to come to the Country Western Service at 5:00pm on Sundays whenever possible.

If you have gone to one of the morning services, your spirits were li ed and your day was off to a great start. Coming to the Country Western service is like adding a tasty dessert to a great meal—and it’s calorie free!

If you didn’t make it in the morning and have a sense that the day is not complete, we guarantee that joining the joyful crowd at 5:00pm will li your spirits, provide some cardiac benefi ng exercise (like hand clapping, foot tapping and smiles that take the wrinkles out of your face) and have you singing some good old southern gospel country songs!

One In the Spirit provides the music on all but the last Sunday of the month when Ron and Chris Houser, Tara Jones, John and Carol LaViole e bring classic western songs.

Folks keep telling me “Don’t stop preaching un l you drop!” That is sort of a mixed feeling crea ng compliment, but I will do my best to keep from dropping for as long as possible.

Our Music Director, David Ballard, and I, along with the friendliest greeters this side of the old west look forward to welcoming you any

me you can come!

S BUSY!

It is that wonderful me of year when all of our winter visitors are with us again. The DPS officer is direc ng traffic, and pa ence is important in arriving/depar ng Kings Ranch Road. Thank you for allowing me to come in as you leave. I will try my best to return the favor!

SCHEDULED SUNDAY VOLUNTEERS

Our Planning Center Online is crucial to having the 100+ weekly volunteers ready and aware of where and when their posts are. If you are one of these volunteers, I have a few pointers for you.

1. When you receive a request from myself or Ka e Mulry, please scroll down on your phone or computer page to see the Accept or Decline op ons.

2. Using your mouse, stylus, or finger, as the case may be, choose one, which allows us to receive your response immediately. If you do this within a day or two, we can resend this request to another volunteer or know you are available. Needless to say, MAKE A NOTE OF IT ON YOUR CALENDAR. We all have our favorite ways to remind us of appointments, etc... Thank you!!

3. To allow us all a be er day, the Welcome Center has a Sunday printout of volunteers/assignments. If you do not remember or forgot to make a note of your post, stop by and inquire. Some of you may wish to phone (480)982‐3776 at 7:30am or a er to verify a later post for the day, OR report if you are unable to do the assignment as you have an emergency.

4. There are mes when volunteers are uncertain their responses are being sent. You may call the same church phone number to verify your response to a volunteer recep onist during the week from 8 AM to 4PM. However, in nearly all cases, the responses are automa c. This is how we can do our assignments with be er reliability and fewer phone messages/calls.

Thank you for your a en on to these notes! See you Sunday.

Y M T 2017… W YOU S ?

Our Youth Group will be heading off to Colorado Springs, CO this summer to a end a week long service project sponsored by Next Step Ministries. Over the last three years, Colorado Springs has seen a rise in homelessness. Just this past year, the homeless popula on was up nearly 6% with youth homelessness up 7%.

We will be par cipa ng in building projects for families, outreach events to the community, service projects that meet the food and shelter needs of those who are in need. Along with Next Step Ministries, we will be partnering with local churches in the area and Family Life Services which focuses on rebuilding the lives of single moms and their children. Type of work we may be doing: building repair such as apartment remodels, flooring, roofing and landscaping at Family Life Services as well as working at a food pantry or serving meals at a local shelter.

In order for the youth to financially a end this mission trip, would you consider being a shareholder? The cost per share is $400, half a share is $200, a quarter share is $100, but any amount is greatly appreciated. As a shareholder, you will receive a le er from the youth plus you will be invited to a end a “Thank You Dinner” where you will see a video and hear stories from the teens about their experiences in Colorado Springs. These trips are life changing for the par cipants as well as the people they are serving! If you wish to donate, please mark your checks or giving envelopes to "Youth Group Mission Trip".

Our youth not only help with mission opportuni es, but they volunteer to be communion servers, liturgists or greeters on the first Sunday of each month at the 9:30 am worship service. It is such a blessing to have the youth so ac ve in our church and in the community! Thank you so much for your financial support and especially for your prayers!

Blessings,

Beth

February! Love is in the air! Surely, more than just roman c love. Certainly, agape love (Christ‐like) is always there, especially, if we engage others with agape love!

If you have thought about singing in the Choir, now is the me to join us! No audi on – we only ask that you can sing

on pitch, and read music at least a li le! Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 6:50pm! Please arrive a few minutes early, so we can get you registered, and give you music and a folder. Come find out what all the fun is about!

If you are an experienced Handbell Ringer, we are o en looking for ringers to join us as regulars or subs tutes. For more informa on, call me at the church. We meet in the Sanctuary on Tuesdays from 6:30pm‐8:00pm.

Lots to do this month! We have several outstanding concerts lined up for you. First, the Gold Canyon Arts Council is bringing in James Tormé, Mel Tormé’s son, on Friday, February 10 at 7:30pm. We will have discount coupons available at the Welcome Center on Sunday, February 5th and in the Church Office during that week. The coupons give a $7.00 discount off the $30.00 cket, but must be redeemed at Canyon Rose Storage (2 blocks north of the church) by Friday noon.

Next is a very special concert on our fantas c 3‐manual Rodgers Trillium 967 Organ performed on Sunday, February 12 at 2:00pm by Dr. Mark Ramsey who has played for us on The  Seven  Last Words  of  Christ and the Fauré Requiem.  Mark and I have known each other for many, many years and have worked together on the Board of Directors of the Central Arizona Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He is superb! This concert has already been funded so 100% of the offering will go to the Pipes for the  Organ  Fund!  Please bring your family, friends and neighbors! I promise an outstanding program!

We are currently trying to raise $250,000 to purchase and install several ranks (sets) of actual wind‐blown pipes to our digital organ. Rodgers is the world’s leader in combina on pipe/digital organs. Not only will we have a beau ful looking organ case made of pipes behind the handbell tables, but we can finally bring down the speakers from way above the Choir and intermix them among the pipes, spreading them across the en re area behind the handbells to give the organ an incredible amount of breadth and presence, rather than the very focused sound we currently have. Not to men on that the Choir will finally be able to hear the organ (they can’t now because it’s too high and far forward of the Choir), which is one of the reasons we don’t use it much to accompany the Choir. If you have any ques ons about the organ, please let me know. I would love to talk with you about it.

Our next event is the always very popular, Organ Stop Pizza Lunch on Wednesday, February 15 at 11:00am. This is the home of the World’s Largest Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ, and the largest Theatre Pipe Organ in a public place in the world (there is one larger by only a few hundred pipes in a home near Chicago!). Featured will be the world’s finest theatre organist, Lew Williams, who has performed for us in concert on our Rodgers organ a couple of mes. The cost for the lunch is $8.25 (cash only ‐ ATM on site) for all the pizza you can eat, a salad and the program; Drinks and ice cream are extra. As part of his program, Lew will go through all the gadgets, doo‐hickies, and stuff this organ has, which is truly unbelievable! If you have never been to Organ Stop Pizza, you must come to this lunch and check it out! Our Church reserves the en re place just for us, but sea ng is limited to only 350 people. Sign‐up sheets are in the Lobby of both buildings. Come check it out… You’ll only be sorry if you don’t!

Next, The Incredible Rice Brothers will be here in concert on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00pm. Johnny and Chris Rice are both true virtuosos on both the piano and the cello – they both play both instruments! They have performed in Poland, Vienna, Germany and throughout the USA from Florida to Wisconsin, from Disneyland to Carnegie Hall! (Yes, Martha and I were there when they performed in Carnegie Hall!). Many of you heard them play for us during our Christmas Concerts and again on Christmas Eve. They play everything from serious classical to boogie‐woogie! Bring your family, friends and neighbors; they’ll be very glad you did! Be sure to get here early… as this is one of the most popular concerts we have!

Finally, our last concert of the month will feature the Houser Gang on Sunday, February 26 at 2:00pm in the Sanctuary. Ron, Tara and the gang will present a concert of great Western music. Ron is a real cowboy who used to heard ca le during the summer months. Now, he just sings about it. His daughter, Tara, is one of the best fiddlers I’ve seen! Again, bring your family, friends and neighbors, but get here early as the Houser Gang fills the Sanctuary quickly! You will leave with a song in your heart, a smile on your face, and feet that refuse to stop dancing!

Please remember our concerts are open to the public at no charge, as an offering will be received. Everyone is asked to please bring at least one non‐perishable food item per person for the GCUMC Food Bank.

I hope you can make it to all our events. If you have any ques ons, just give me a call at the church.

Rich Hoiland and Judy Welch!

The above group of hard‐working, commi ed servants spent a week in January serving with Rice and Beans Ministry in Costa Rica. We landed in San Jose and traveled to the suburb Alejuela. Mornings were spent in home improvement construc on projects with the spiritual goal of sharing Christ’s love through our ac ons and the humanitarian goal of making the dwelling more livable for its occupants. We were con nually amazed at the warmth and hospitality extended to us in the most modest circumstances. A person definitely receives more than one can give in these situa ons! The scene changed in the a ernoons as we delivered food bags (rice, beans, masa, powdered milk) in neighborhoods, again sharing God’s love and praying with householders over their requests, which ranged from immediate health and employment needs to world peace. We also enjoyed an ou ng to the Waterfall Wildlife Park where exo c birds and bu erflies, as well as many other creatures, and three amazing waterfalls delighted us. We have all been enriched and blessed through our interac ons with Chris ans in another culture. A part of our heart remains thee. God bless the Rice and Beans ministry and all its workers!

Here’s a prayer request to keep in mind: A summer ministry of the Rice and Beans ministries is Base Camp, a week‐long youth conference that a racts over 150 young people. In July Pastor Fay Quanstrom will be one of two speakers for the 2017 Base Camp.

SCRIP B /V P U

Did you know that since October 2002, the SCRIP Bus/Van Program has raised over $163,000? These funds purchased gas, licenses, insurance and maintenance on our two vehicles that are used to bring people to church and take our Youth to events like the yearly Mission trip. Soon we will have a covered structure to help protect our vehicles from the Arizona sun and heat!

Also, did you know that the SCRIP Program costs those using it absolutely nothing? All you have to do is use any —or all—of the below methods to do your shopping! Bashas’, Fry’s and Smile.Amazon.com help non‐profit organiza ons—like GCUMC—by giving a rebate on purchases. The Bashas & Fry’s Shoppers cards must be obtained from and/or be connected to GCUMC.

Smile.Amazon.com donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to the GCUMC SCRIP Bus & Van Fund whenever you shop on AmazonSmile—same selec on— same prices! Just go to: h ps://smile.amazon.com/ch/86‐0621002

Bashas’ (6%  rebate) Community Support Cards can be purchased at the Welcome Center or Church Office in denomina ons of $20, $50 or $100, and used at all AZ store loca ons, including AJ’s Fine Foods and Food City. When the card balance gets low (shown  on  store receipt), you can reload it at the Customer Service Desk or at the register before your order is rung up (up to $500) using cash, credit/debit card.

Fry’s VIP Card (up  to  3%  rebate)  Register your VIP card online with GCUMC’s affilia on #80092, or you can come to the Church Office and we’ll be glad to help.

For more informa on, visit the Welcome Center between worship services on Sunday morning, the church office during the week, or call Be y Rolley (480)380‐0147 to learn how YOU can par cipate!

It all adds up… and the best thing is that it doesn’t cost you a penny to par cipate…

It’s a WIN‐WIN situa on!

Please pray for these persons who are currently being trained as Stephen Ministers: Sue Cline, Mona Cunning‐ham, Linda Crane, Judy Walsh and Katharine Keller. Please also pray for the instructors as they lead the clas‐ses.

We rejoice with Dick Thomas, who was recently commis‐sioned as a Stephen Leader a er having completed a week‐long training last August. Congratula ons, Dick! Dick is our Con nuing Educa on Coordinator for Ste‐phen Ministry.

Below is another tes mony from a Care Receiver. Our Ministry is here for you!

“Thirty years ago our church started to teach people how to  become  a  Stephen  Minister.  I  didn’t  have  any  idea what it was all about. The class was very interes ng, and I decided that I wanted to be one. When the class ended, I very quickly signed up.

I was assigned to work with an elderly woman who need‐ed a  friend.  I  felt very welcome  in her home.  I was with her  once  a  week.  She  had  two  severely  mentally  chal‐lenged adult children who lived with her. When I went to see her she would share her problems and we would talk about them. I was proud to be her friend.

Now, I am much older than she was when I was helping her.  I  have  so many  health  problems and  o en  I  am  in serious  pain  preven ng  me  from  ge ng  out  much.  I suffered for two years, and one day I remembered being a  Stephen  Minister.  I  was  scared  and  knew  I  wanted some help.  I  called  the  church  and  asked  for  a  Stephen Minister. Very quickly, a  lady called and wanted  to visit me.  I was thrilled to know she was coming to our home to visit me.  It has been almost a year since her first visit. What a blessing! She has helped me think about the posi‐ve things in my life.

Being a snowbird, I appreciate her phone calls on a regu‐lar basis. I con nue to very much appreciate the Stephen Ministry and the posi ve effect on my life.

With much thankfulness…”

"A  son  is  a  being  independent  of  his father,  and  will  not  necessarily  follow him,  and  the  sooner  the  father  accepts this,  the  be er." This was advice to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1863

when his son enlisted in the Union Army without his blessing, as wri en in the book Christmas Bells, inspired by Longfellow’s classic poem.    Whether or not this advice was ever actually given to Mr. Longfellow, it is intriguing.

That statement probably makes sense to most of us when applied to our earthly lives. For the most part it is true. We raise our children, provide them the skills and tools necessary to live independently, and ul mately must let them find their way in this world. Many, many

mes we watch them flounder, ignore good advice or ‘road maps’ they’ve been handed, stray outside the boundaries of values and belief systems with which they were raised, or even wander from their Chris an founda ons. We stress about how to change them and make them see it our way. Or, when they succeed beyond our wildest dreams, we may try to take credit.

Let’s look at this statement again ‐ A  son  is  a  being independent  of  his  father,  and  will  not  necessarily follow him, and the sooner the father accepts this, the be er ‐ How does that apply to God the Father? Sadly, we allow ourselves to be independent of our heavenly Father way too o en. We forge our own paths and try to go it alone; we exercise our free will. God accepts that we are going to do this, he doesn’t like it, but he accepts it. He is pa ent and steadfast. He has given us the roadmap.

Pastor Rick Warren recently wrote “God knows what causes  the  stress  in  your  life.  He  knows  humility  and gentleness are the an dotes to the two biggest causes of stress in your life: arrogance and aggression. Jesus wants to give you a be er way — but you have to  learn  from him. You must let him change you.”

We so o en allow ourselves to get caught up in our problems, in our solu ons, in making things happen, in convincing others to see it our way – arrogance and aggression? When in reality we need to pause, listen, trust, follow God’s roadmap, serve others – humility and gentleness?

But alas, newsflash, we’re human! It’s easy to get caught up in our troubles, leaving us feeling like we’re trying to find our way out of a cave without a light. We know God is there yet we struggle truly trus ng in Him, in His love for us, and le ng Him take the controls.

If you aren’t doing well leaning on the Father (or maybe you are ques oning His presence at the moment), maybe you could use a fellow Chris an to take your hand and walk beside you as you move toward the an dote for your stress. If so, think about reques ng a Stephen Minister. This trained lay minister will walk with you while keeping everything you confide in complete confidence. Just call (480)283‐4861 or the Church Office, send an email to [email protected], or check the box beside “Desire a  Stephen Minister” on the Sunday morning a endance pad.

“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence

with knowledge, and knowledge with self‐control, and self‐control with pa ent endurance, and pa ent

endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affec on, and brotherly affec on with love for

everyone.  8 The more you grow like this, the more produc ve and useful you will be in your knowledge of

our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This ministry not only li s you physically, but spiritually, too! The official start of this hiking season was January 10th, but you can s ll join in! Hikes coming up in February are:

7th Treasure Loop via the Mine and Jacobs Crosscut,

14th Phon D. Su on Mid‐mountain Pass (Short) to Salt River & back,

21st Parker Pass via Transmission Pass, and

28th Historical Pinal City & Apache Tears by Superior.

We typically meet in the GCUMC south parking lot every Tuesday at 8:00am to commute to the trailhead. In regards to inclement weather (colder or warmer), I will tell you via email if we need to meet an hour later, or an hour earlier. Depending where you live, you can also meet right at the trailhead.

Hikes are interpre ve some mes, teaching one about the desert plants and animals that live here, as well as how to generally survive in the desert. Hikes vary in difficulty and are typically 3—5 miles. Some mes they are more and can also be as short as 3 hours. Due to travel me, the en re trip may be 5+ hours, this is why I ask hikers not to plan appointments for the day. We hike on established trails—some flat (easy) and some hilly for a medium hiking ability.

I ask that expenses be shared with your driver if you’re commu ng. I recommend you bring 2‐3 liters of water, a snack or lunch, good hiking shoes/boots, layers of clothing, a jacket & gloves (depending on the temperature), a wide hat, sunscreen, and other items you may need, like medica ons, walking s cks, sunglasses, etc., and a light knapsack to put it all in. For more info or to request this season’s Hiking Schedule, please contact Jim Riedel at (414)350‐1466 or [email protected].

We are looking forward to par cipa ng in building a home with the Sarray family in Tempe this winter as part of our membership in the Supers on Coali on

Gold Canyon United Methodist Church

of churches in the East Valley. The loca on is 1937 E. Don Carlos, Tempe, AZ 85281, near the Loop 101 and Main Street/Apache Blvd.

The Sarray family moved to the United States in 2012 to escape the dangers and threats of fatal punishment from ISIS in Baghdad, Iraq. Nawres and Mina are raising their two children Marine and Eisa, ages 4 and 2, in a rented two‐bedroom apartment in Tempe. They want to provide their kids with a safe, stable home and a backyard to play. This will be a normal 16‐week build for our coali on of churches. Gold Canyon UMC will have an opportunity to build on 1/28, 3/11, 4/8 and 4/22.

Please pray for this ministry and consider dona ng money or me to this effort. Please mark your check memo for Habitat for Humanity, or make your contribu on online at www.GoldCanyonUMC.org. Thanks so much for your ongoing support of this ministry. For more info, contact Joe and Maureen Morton (602)284‐2826 / [email protected].

It’s not too late to sign‐up for the new UMW group! Interested women should contact Joy Bliss at (505)270‐7085 (cell) or [email protected].

We are now mee ng in the Emmaus Room in the church at 9:30am on Monday mornings. Everyone is welcome! We use Grow, Pray, Study

(GPS) as a discussion guide, and we also discuss the Sunday sermon. Ques ons? Call Skip at (480)216‐3039.

served 9,797 individuals.

Our current 2016 year end sta s cs show that food was provided for 10,333 individuals belonging to 3,328 families by the distribu on of 8,890 bags of food. This was possible only through your generous food and monetary dona ons. A huge part of the success of this mission is the contribu ons of concert goers who a end our own Gold Canyon United Methodist Concert series. Other major contribu ons are through the United Food Bank, local churches and civic groups. Your Sunday morning dona ons are also tremendously important. With each individual concert goer dona ng at least a can of food for our pantry, we are able to provide food for folks during the summer months when dona ons are not as plen ful. We would like to remind any of our donors that any dona ons during the summer months are greatly appreciated. With reduced dona ons during the summer months we need to make outside purchases of 20‐30 cases of food a week.

We are looking forward to reloca ng our food bank into the former Red Sage restaurant building that is currently under a massive remodeling project. Our food bank will occupy almost one third of the building space and is being designed to be er meet the needs of our food bank volunteers and clients. Our volunteers are very special dedicated people. These loyal volunteers have con nued to work within the confines of a very small space, doing the best they can to meet the needs of so many. We are ready to spread our wings and fly!

A new Arizona bill increased the amount of tax credits to qualifying charitable organiza ons. Individuals may now claim up to $400 and couples $800. Donate to Genesis Project of Arizona directly and receive a tax credit to offset

your 2016 Arizona state taxes. We are a faith‐based 501(c)3 fully funded by dona ons and staffed by volunteers.
