Welcome to God’s House It is good for us to remember regularly the waters of our own Baptism, in which we

are united to Jesus in his death and in his resurrection. In fact, each day, by

remembering our Baptism, we are reminded that our sin is drowned and we are given

strength to live a new life.

THE COMMON SERVICE

Opening Hymn Christ, Your Footprints Through the Desert CWS #709:1-3 Christ, your footprints through the desert led to Jordan’s flowing stream.

There you heard the herald crying Israel’s old prophetic dream:

“He is coming! He is coming! He will cleanse the earth with flame!

Sinners, plunge beneath the waters! Wash away your guilt and shame!” Christ, you heard the stirring summons as by Jordan’s bank you stood;

Bathed, though sinless, with your people in the river’s cleansing flood.

High above, the heavens opened; came the Spirit as a dove;

Spoke a voice beyond all hearing: “See my Son, the one I love!” Son of God, the road from Jordan led at last to Calv’ry’s hill.

There upon the cross forsaken, you fulfilled the Father’s will.

Lamb of God, we see you dying, sinless, yet for sinners slain.

But where death rose up to triumph, you began your glorious reign!

Invocation M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Confession of Sins M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to

God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have

disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil

and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now

and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus

Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

♫ Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to

be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and

Prayer of the Day M: Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed

him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are

baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs

with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Scripture Reading Acts 16:25-34 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the

other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent

earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison

doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when

he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself

because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm

yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He

then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your

household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his

house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then

immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into

his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to

Gospel Mark 1:4-11 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: C: ♫ Glory be to you, O Lord! 4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of

repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the

people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by

him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt

around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message:

“After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not

worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you

with the Holy Spirit.” 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the

Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn

open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven:

“You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: ♫ Praise be to you, O Christ!

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all

that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the

Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our

salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin

Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He

suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He

will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no

end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father

and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who

has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic

Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the

resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Sermon Mark 1:4-11

me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Communion is a testimony of the confession and commitment we share as members

of the Lutheran Church. We ask guests who are not members of our Lutheran

denomination to speak with the pastor before joining us at the altar so all may have a

clear understanding of our faith and practice. Annual Meeting Our semi-annual voters’ meeting is scheduled for Monday evening,

January 18th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. KML Sunday Next Sunday we will be treated to a smaller version of Kettle Moraine

Lutheran’s traveling choir (about 35 voices), who will be singing throughout the

worship service. We thank our accompanist this weekend, Barb Olsen. Altar Flowers There are a number of open spots for flowers this new year. Sign up

occasion next to your name. The cost is $9 (per setting) and is payable to Zion Ladies’

available on the table next to the kitchen. Thanks to a great group of volunteers who stayed after church last Sunday to help

with taking

down the tree and the undecorating. Thanks to your help…everything was completed

in short order. Percussion Concert This Saturday, January 16, at 6:30 p.m., you’re invited to enjoy a

percussion concert featuring the ensembles of Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School
