FSAE 2019-2020

The Binghamton Motorsports Formula SAE team is thecollegiate team that falls under the BinghamtonUniversity chapter of the Society of AutomotiveEngineers (SAE). Our objective each year is to create anin-house, competitive formula internal combustionengine vehicle that meets the requirements andtechnical specifications outlined by SAE International. As a student run, multidisciplinary racing team, weallow students from a range of backgrounds to furthertheir understanding of the automotive industry byapplying their academic knowledge towards creativeproblem solving. Through creating an efficient andhigh-performance vehicle, we gain exposure toteamwork, leadership, and logistical skills thatempower our young professionals to seek careerswithin this industry.

FSAE 2018-2019

The Binghamton Motorsports Formula SAE team is ameaningful experience to help Binghamton studentsmature and apply new skills for many years. The 2020-2021 season marks the third year of Formula SAEbeing offered as a club project. We first competed inthe annual FSAE Michigan Competition in May of2019, where we passed technical inspection andparticipated in several dynamic events, which was amajor milestone for a first-year team! We arecontinuing to build upon our inaugural success byimproving the design and performance each year.

Communication and Collaboration: When developing adesign, one of the most challenging aspects is makingdecisions and justifying them with numerical evidence.Communication with peers provides a greater wealthof knowledge to draw from. Having frequent andconsistent sub-team meetings, as well as involvingmembers of other sub-teams, will help drive ourdesigns to be thoroughly and thoughtfully designed.

Justified Designs: Justification comes in the form ofnumerical evidence that supports our decision makingprocess. In 2019, the judges suggested more numericalevidence for our decisions and proper matrices toweigh our alternative designs. We want to use analysisto drive our designs, thus ensuring that the properdecision making processes are being followed.

Designing for Manufacturability: With the Coronaviruspandemic imposing the possibility of a reduced budgetand limited opportunities to collaborate in groups, wewill actively design components that can bemanufactured quickly and more effectively, primarilywith materials already in inventory. While this may bedifficult, we believe that working under suchrestrictions will force greater creativity to reach ourend goal of a functional, competitive vehicle in a timelymanner.

OUR

CAR

Our car is redesigned each year to meet the technicalspecifications outlined by the Formula SAEcompetition rule book. From June to May of thefollowing year, we design and fabricate custom parts, purchase components, assemble, and test our new car.In order to accomplish this, our FSAE team has twomanagers and six sub-teams. Project Manager: Monitors submission deadlines, guides meetings, and communicates with faculty asneeded.

Chief Engineer: Assists with fabrication, manufacturing, and design while also reviewing reports and facilitatingcollaboration.

Drivetrain: Optimizes gear ratios to line up shiftingpoints with the various tracks at competition. They alsodesign the brake system to ensure drivers can applyenough torque to lock the wheels while allowing forenough pedal travel to brake at different levels.

Electronics: Handles all wiring, sensing, data collection, and HUD functions. Uses an array of sensorsconnected to micro-controllers that read and mapother subsystems (e.g. engine load or suspensiontravel) while the car is driven. This data can bedisplayed or stored for analysis.

6

Frame and Ergonomics: Designs the structural steelspace frame for driver comfort, torsional stiffness, andtight packaging of internal components. They alsodesign the fiberglass composite bodywork for sponsordisplays.

Powertrain: Focuses on maximizing the efficiency andperformance of the engine and its various components. Most of their specific component designs are basedaround fluids, including airflow through the intake andexhaust, fuel pumped from the fuel tank, and coolantpassing through the radiator.

Suspension: Focuses on improving performance, drivercomfort, and safety. They also design the steeringsystem for easy navigation of the various courses toget the best lap times. They are detail focused whendesigning and tuning the car for optimal performance.

Finance: Acquires and manages funding then allocatesbudgets for the other five sub-teams. They alsoperform marketing duties by creating newsletters andfocusing on sponsor outreach.

Formula SAE Michigan is the main competition for theteam. Held each May at the Michigan InternationalSpeedway in Brooklyn, MI, the Michigan competition isthe largest competition held by SAE. We competeagainst 120 teams and approximately 2,500 studentsfrom across the world in various static and dynamicevents.

Static events include business, design, and cost analysispresentations, while dynamic events includeAcceleration, Skid-Pad, Autocross, Efficiency, andEndurance. In addition to ranking in the multiplecategories, monetary prizes are offered for innovativesolutions to engineering problems. SAE also holds anumber of smaller competitions across North America.

While competition is a major part of the FSAEexperience, we mainly hope to inspire students todevelop and showcase engineering, problem-solving,and project management skills and create anenvironment that nurtures their interests in theautomotive industry.

Due to safety concerns surrounding the Coronaviruspandemic, the 2019-2020 FSAE competition wasmoved to an online format. We considered the benefitsand drawbacks of competing in this type ofcompetition and after lengthy discussion and with amajority vote, we decided to compete.

While this competition differed from previous years, itwas still a very valuable experience as we had theability to showcase our designs and fabricatedcomponents. We were given the opportunity tonetwork and interact with professionals fromcompanies in various industries and receive valuablefeedback that is helping us improve the vehicle thisyear. If you choose to support us, your investmentwould go towards enriching our educationalexperience and helping us grow as students andprofessionals.

As the pandemic is an ongoing crisis, SAE is takingsafety into consideration by offering a hybridcompetition in 2021, with both in-person and virtualcomponents. However, since many of our membershave experienced this new format and gained a betterunderstanding, we are confident in our ability to drawbenefits from this competition style.

TSTaking safety concerns into consideration, it is unlikelythat the 2020-2021 FSAE team will hold many in-person events. However, when we are able to, we willresume holding a variety of events at both theUniversity campus and in the local community. In thepast, we have participated in industry trips, carshowcases, shop tours, and team-building eventswhere our sponsors received brand recognition andexposure.

Paintball: As a team bonding experience, as well as torelieve some stress, the team headed to Owego, NY fora couple sessions of paintball at R&M paintball.

Driver Training: Two courses were set up in ourUniversity parking lot that aimed to test severalhopeful driver candidates in acceleration andautocross. Each candidate had two timed runs on thecourses.

Michigan trip: A select group of our teammates wereable to tour multiple industry sites in Michigan and metwith one of the top North American teams in FSAE.The team also met up with alumni at Emagine for acasual hang out with some sponsors and industryprofessionals where they played pool, shuffleboard, and bowling.
