  • ★elcome to our 20th annual celebration

of food & fund drives and the people who make them possible. 2010 marked the

most successful year in Second Harvest Food Bank’s history through the combined efforts of more than 2,000 food and fund drives. Tonight we celebrate you, our community champions, for your tireless commitment and passionate efforts to feed our neighbors in need through your

gifts of time, dollars, and food. During this year of rising need, you acted boldly on the belief that hunger is unacceptable. Volunteers gave countless hours of support, while thousands of people just like you — individuals,

foundations and corporations — gave generously to keep the nutritious food flowing to those who need it most. As a community we have much success to celebrate. But our celebration is tempered by the fact that hunger still has a daily presence in the neighborhoods we call home. We need to continue reducing, and ultimately ending, hunger in our community. Thank you, again, for believing that hunger is unacceptable. Together we will continue nourishing those in need, and serve as leaders in creating a hunger-free community.

  • Many children in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties rely on free school lunches for the food they need to grow and thrive. Ever think about what happens to these children when school’s out for the summer?

Second Harvest is committed to providing healthy food for children in need over the summer months through the Share Your Lunch campaign. Thanks to you, we met our 2010 goal of feeding 85,000 children each summer month. Summer is already right around the corner and we need your continued support.

  • Kevin and his family receive food assistance each month through Second Harvest Food Bank’s Family Harvest program. He and his family represent a growing number of our neighbors in need that are coming to us for the first time. The proud father of a 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, Kevin discovered the Family Harvest program because his daughter’s school is a monthly distribution site. “I’m not ashamed to be receiving food assistance. I’m optimistic and full of hope, thanks to my kids. I’ve got to be strong for them.” Kevin previously worked as a corporate records manager. Despite having a college degree and applying for dozens of minimum wage jobs, he has remained unemployed

for 3 years. His wife’s employer also cut hours, increasing the family’s need for food assistance. Kevin’s family receives food stamps but their monthly supply runs out quickly and doesn’t allow for high-cost items like produce. He says they would simply not be eating fresh fruits and vegetables without the Food Bank. As a father, Kevin can rest easier knowing that his growing son and daughter are not just getting enough meals, but are also receiving the nutritious foods they need to be healthy. Thanks to you, our community champions, families like Kevin’s have nutritious food on their tables. Your dedication helps create freedom from hunger for all of our dads, moms, sons and daughters.

You Make it PossibleYour efforts help to feed thousands of families

every day. Meet one of them.

“Hunger means not being able to put food on the table for your family.”
