    Unit fraction has 1 as

its numerator (top number). They put a mouth

    picture (which meant part)

    above a number to make

    it into a unit fraction.

    In India, fractions

were written very muchlike we do now, with one

number (the numerator) aboveanother (the denominator),

    but without a line.

    It was theArabswho

added the line (sometimesdrawn horizontally, sometimes on a

slant)which we now use toseparate the numerator

    and denominator

    Two numbers that compose a

    fraction are called the:

    Numerator

    Denominator

  • 8/14/2019 F r a Ction

    16/53

    THE DENOMINATOR

tells into how manyparts the whole is

    divided.THE NUMERATOR

    indicates the

    represented number

    of pieces of the whole.

    The 3 is the numerator ;

    the 5 is the denominator.

There are five parts thatmake up the whole.

    Only those part are being

    referred to.

    KINDS OF FRACTION

    a.Proper Fractionb.Improper Fraction

    c.Mixed Numbers

    20/53

    PROPER FRACTION

the numerator is smaller than the

    denominatorindicating a part of awhole.

the value of proper fraction is < 1.

    21/53

    IMPROPER FRACTION

the numerator is larger than the

    denominatorindicating a whole ormixed number.

The value of an improper fractionis 1 or more.

    MIXED NUMBERS

a whole number and a properfraction indicating whole

    number(s) plus a part of a

    whole.

The value of a mixed number is

    > 1 : it is the sum of the wholenumber plus the fraction.

    To Change an Improper Fraction

into mixed number or a whole

number:1. Divide the denominator into the

numerator2.If there is a remainder, change it

into a fraction by writing it as the

top number over the bottomnumber of the improper fraction.

Write it next to the whole number.

To change a mixed number into

    an improper fraction :

    1. Multiply the whole number by

the bottom number2.Add the top number to the

    product of step 1.

3.Write the total as the topnumber of a fraction over the

    original bottom number.

    divided by the bottom number

  • 8/14/2019 F r a Ction

    29/53

    Means

    3 divided by 5.

The value of 3/5 is the same as

the quotient you will get when

    you do the division.

    * Reducing Fraction means

writing in its lowest terms, that

    is with smaller numbers.

    * Reducing Fraction does notchange its value.

10, 100, 1000 etc., depending on the number

    of zeros you cross out.
