Public education is a core American value, best described by Horace Mann in 1848, “Education then, beyond all other devices

of human origin, is a great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance wheel of the social machinery.” At Foundation 65,

we believe that strong schools and teachers not only transform the lives of our children, but strengthen our community, helping

Evanston flourish culturally and economically.

Over the past five years, Foundation 65 has grown exponentially,

increasing the number of students served through funded

programming by more than 180%, making a real impact at all

sixteen schools in the district. Pilot programs have been proven

effective and expanded, reaching more students and more schools.

Dollars granted have increased 60%. In 2012, we granted more

than $198,000 to benefit students across District 65 impacting

every school.

Foundation 65 has been successful in providing a unique model

of grant-making which serves students, teachers, families and

community members. We have shown that investing private dollars

in public education can allow the District to explore innovative,

ground-breaking ways to improve education, within a framework

that is accountable and measurable.

Community support can make a positive difference for students

and schools -- and in turn, a strong public education system is

essential for a thriving community.

1. Significantly contribute to decreasing the achievement gap by partnering closely with the district and funding programs that are measurable and have specific outcomes. Students can lose up to three months

of reading progress over the summer, but 88% of the struggling readers who participate in Foundation 65’s Summer Reading

Program are able to maintain or even increase their reading level. This allows them to begin the school year where they left off, rather

than falling further behind. The program is so effective that in many cases, students actually increase their reading level. As a result,

all students benefit, as the academic level is raised for the entire classroom.

Through focused literacy and arts based programs, Foundation 65

is making a difference in education in our community.

Our funded programs:

2. Complement and support the new Common Core Standards for literacy. The new standards identify

how literacy is needed within all subject matters – from science to math and beyond. Under these new standards, expectations will

rise for all students and it is critical to teach students the necessary skills to grapple with complex, non-fiction texts. Foundation 65’s

program, Advancing Literacy for ALL, does this by helping students read, understand and discuss non-fiction. On average, 95% of

students have seen measurable increases in fluency, academic vocabulary, content knowledge and overall ease of reading.

3. Address the inequity between schools by providing literacy and arts enrichment for students across the district. The Family

Author program has inspired students across the district by bringing nationally

renowned authors to every school. Students prepare for the visits by exploring the

author’s work through art, music, theater and photography. In this way, reading comes

to life and becomes more meaningful and relevant for each child.

4. Focus on key transitions in students’ academic careers, in particular the transition between preschool and kindergarten. ALL kindergartners, regardless of their skill level,

can confidently participate and ultimately benefit from Kindergarten Literacy Education at Play, an innovative program that introduces

and reinforces literacy skills through play scenarios. Teachers call it “literacy in action” as children practice using complete sentences,

learn practical vocabulary and connect writing to real world situations.

5. Place emphasis on family and community involvement in education. The Child Parent Center program

provides intensive educational and family support services for pre-K to third grade children in low-income families. Parents commit

to at least 2.5 hours per week of parent involvement time by doing a range of activities including, but not limited to, reading to

their child, helping with homework, cooking together, volunteering in the classroom, going to the library, attending a PTA meeting,

etc. Longitudinal studies have shown that this

program substantially improves students’ school

readiness and leads to increased grade three

reading levels, graduation rates, and salaries, as

well as decreased incarceration rates.

Foundation 65 funded programs in 2012-2013Advancing Literacy for ALL - The purpose of this project

is to increase content literacy through improved instruction and

a greater array of materials related to science and social studies

topics. Ultimately, the goal is to increase students’ ability to read

and understand complex nonfiction text and to better prepare

students for the challenge of successful learning in high school.

After successfully piloting this program for three years at Chute

and it’s feeder schools, Foundation 65 is funding a district-

wide expansion of this program. Job imbedded professional

development for 4th-8th grade science and social studies

teachers is a critical component of the program.

Child-Parent Center Expansion - The CPC education

program is designed to provide intensive and continuous

educational and family-support services for pre-K to third-grade

children in low-income families and high-poverty neighborhoods,

including the establishment of parent resource centers within

elementary schools. Its goal is to promote school readiness,

parent involvement and early school achievement which have

long-term positive effects on achievement, graduation and career

success. The program started at the JEH Education Center and

four elementary schools.

Summer Reading Program - This grant supports summer

reading growth by providing books to students who have

received supplementary reading support in first grade. From June

through August, teachers will correspond with students and send

them books in the mail. Research has shown that economically

disadvantaged and/or struggling readers, engage in very little

reading during their summer vacation. This lack of reading results

in considerable summer reading loss. Students often lose from

one to three months of reading achievement. By keeping these

struggling readers engaged in reading, they are able to maintain

the reading growth they attained during the school year.

Family Author Experience –This program brings a

renowned children’s author to all D65 schools and includes a

combination of school, family and community based activities.

Through each school’s library and classrooms, students read and

become familiar with selected, grade-appropriate books of the

author. Pre and post visit activities are coordinated by classroom

teachers and the librarian at each school. A community wide

open house /event is included. The program started in 2009-

2010 at Nichols, Dewey, Lincoln, Washington and King Lab and

brought author Jack Gantos. In 2010-2011 Chute and its feeder

schools hosted poet Nikki Grimes. In its third year Nic Bishop

came to Haven, Lincolnwood, Kingsley, Orrington, Willard and

Bessie Rhodes. In 2012-2013 the program began a second

three year cycle and bringing bilingual author Isabel Campoy and

musician Suni Paz.

Kindergarten Library Tours –This partnership with

the Evanston Public Library provides funding for all District

65 Kindergartners to visit the Evanston Public Library and

get a library card. This program gives emergent readers the

opportunity to be introduced to the Library’s Children’s Room

and includes a parent incentive to encourage families to return

to the Library following the school visits.

Kindergarten Literacy Education at Play

(Kindergarten LEAP) – This is an outreach early literacy

program developed by the LEAP team at Evanston Public Library.

Through innovative play scenarios, Kindergarten LEAP addresses

early literacy skill building and community and social interaction.

Responsive Grants (One Year Grants)Every year Foundation 65 funds a variety of one-year projects. These grants can be a valuable resource to teachers and local organizations and serve as an incubator for innovative ideas that have the potential to expand across the district.

One year grants applications are due in mid-Janaury for implementation the following school year. For more information on how to apply, visit foundation65.org

Foundation 65 was pleased to support the following organizations in 2012-2013:

Research has documented that summer reading loss is a real issue for many students, particularly for those who are already struggling. Compounding this is the fact that struggling readers are often from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and are already at risk academically.

In an effort to support these students, and help narrow the achievement gap, Foundation 65 began funding the Summer Reading Program in 2004. The program, which supports students who have received supplementary reading assistance in first grade, was developed by District 65 Reading Recovery teacher, Linda Shusterman, in response to the considerable summer reading loss that she witnessed in her students over the years. The goal of the program is to help these emergent readers maintain the reading growth they achieve during the school year.

The program began at Kingsley elementary school, and since then, with help from Foundation 65, has expanded. This year, all incoming 2nd graders in the district who received supplementary reading assistance in first grade, had the opportunity to participate in the program.

“Students can lose up to three months of reading progress over the summer,” said D65 Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Ellen Fogelberg, “setting a child who was already below grade level even further behind.” That presents real challenges for teachers in the fall who must deal with a widening achievement gap.

“In order to narrow the achievement gap, students need to maintain the gains they make in school so that when they start the new school year, they can begin instruction where they left off rather than falling further behind,” said Fogelberg.

How does it work?Reading specialists spend hours in the spring, poring over books to select a combination of 24 non-fiction and fiction titles. Each book is specifically selected for each particular student, matching the student’s reading level and interest. Teachers send students the books throughout the summer along with a personal letter and materials so the student can write back to them.

Students are assessed in the spring and fall, and results show that the program is highly effective. Since 2011, 88% of particpating students maintained the reading level that they achieved at the end of the school year. Of that 88%, more than half (approximately 55%) actually increased their reading level when they return to school in September.

“Often times it is the first time a child has ever received something in the mail,” said Shusterman, “and that excitement translates into enthusiasm and motivation to read.”
