Getting involved from a youngag€ was a common thread with twoother young volunteers as well, TiaciBentley, a 3l-year-old director ofm€tro strategy and development withIntegris Health, and Megan Elliott,a 28-year-old office coordinator withAccel Financial Staffing.

"I think the first volunteer projectthat I participated in was pickingup trash as part of a service proj-ect in elementary school," Bentleysaid. She continued that volunteerwork through high school, includ-ing dressing up as her character in"The Nutcracker" with Ballet Met ofColumbus, Ohio, and visiting a localchildrent hospital.

Her volunteer work today runsthe gamut of events and organizationsin the arts, health, education andeven a local lab rescue.

Elliott, like Bentley, volunteeredfrom a very young age, first remem-bering attending events with hermother. In middle school, she volun-teered one summer as a junior volun-teer at Integris Baptist Medical Center.

"I missed my mornings of sleep-ing in, but it gave me such a uniqueperspective of different ways someon€can volunteer," Elliott said.

That early exposure led her todedicate her time to a variety of socialissues and communiry development.

Both Elliottt and Bentley'semployers encourage volunteering, for which they are both thankful.

"The mission of Integris Healthis to improve the health of the peopleand the communities we serve. \flestrive to provide the best clinical carewithin our facilities, but also recognizethat where people live, what they eat, their level ofeducation and access topreventative care have major impactson health status," Bentley said.

Integis gives its employees one hourper week to mentor at partner schools- Bendeyls a mentor at \(/estern VillageAcademy - and just this year added anexra eight hours ofpersonal paid leavep€r year for employees to volunteer.

\Zirh these young volunteers inmind, Leadership Oklahoma CityInc. began a program designed spe-cifically for young adults just out ofcollege. The program, called LOYAL,joins Leadership Oklahoma City'ssignature adult program (which hasan average age of 44) and high schoolprograms for teenagers.

"LOYAL is designed as an entry-lwel progra-m and is a skills-based

program that teaches through educa-tion and hands-on learning," said BethShom, executive director'of kadershipOklahoma Ciry. "It teaches skills need-ed to be a good community volunteerand hedd toward a leadership position."

LOYAL has iust kicked offitsfourth class and has seen more appli-cants try out for the program eachyear. This class is the largest yet, withjust fewer than 60 participants.

Shortt thinks Oklahoma Ciry isunique in its welcoming attitude toyoung volunteers.

"This part of the world, OklahomaCity, is very open to accepting peopleby who they are, not who their fam-ily is or where theyre from," she said."Nobody

cares all that much how longyouVe been here. There's more oppor-tunity to get involved."

Elliott, a LOYAL grad, agrees. "I

think we are in the midst of an excit-ing time for Oklahoma Ciry. Manyhistoric and urban areas are experienc-ing phenomenal growth and revitaliza-tion as well as our arts community,"she said. "I think there has been anincrease in opportunity that speaksmore to young people wanting to vol-unteer and help further this change."

The'larger "ottlpuniqy'Though the rate ofyouth volunteer-ism is dropping throughout the coun-try an opposite effect seems to behappening in Oklahoma Ciry.

"It's easy for young adults in this

communiry to get involved withorganizations for which they are pas-sionate," Bentley said. "Through

vol-unteerism, we are able to create theenvironment and resources neededto attract and retain bright youngproGssionals. I volunteer for a fewreasons, the first being that sittingaround and complaining has nevergotten anything achieved.

"Oklahoma City is in the process

of reinventing itself. Much of thegrowth and excitement can be attrib-uted to the business communiry butalso to many of the arts, cultural andcivic organizations."

Volunteering helps to remindElliott that, although still young andonly one person, her actions can have
