summed up his experience last

summer working on Tribal Youth

Corps (TYC) in Grand Teton National

Park. The program, in its second year,

brings Native American high-school

students from regional reservations

into the park for multiweek internships.

Participants get their hands dirty im-

proving historic properties and renew-

ing trails while being immersed in the

outdoors. The experience also introduces

National Park Service (NPS) careers and

public lands stewardship. Shakespeare,

one of nine students from Wind River

Reservation, powered through heat,

rain, and dust with teammates during

long workdays and slept under the stars

in Gros Ventre campground. In off

hours, the crew tested their mental and

physical mettle by rock climbing with

Exum Mountain Guides and rafting

the Snake River.

When Caleb Sanchez found out about

TYC from his counselor at Wyoming

Indian Schools, he jumped right in and

worked for seven weeks—the only

student to do both internship sessions.

“Coming to the park and seeing how

many opportunities there are to work

and the different positions you can have,

it’s really amazing.” This insider’s view

gives an authentic look at the inner work-

ings of a national park and its careers. “I

really like what the rangers do and how

they help the wildlife. Being able to ask

them questions and being one-on-one

with them is pretty cool,” Sanchez said.

TYC began as a coincidence of donor

interest in funding improvements on

T “Being outdoors and working with a national park—this has been a dream I’ve always wanted. It seemed like a great opportunity to get my foot in the door.”

• Backcountry crews moved over 950,000 pounds of stone to build rustic steps, drainage, drystone rock walls, and more to transform trails on the west side of Jenny Lake

Mormon Row, and Montana Conserva-

tion Corps looking for projects to employ

young Native American recruits. Megan

Kohli, Grand Teton’s youth program

manager, realized the stars had just

aligned: tribal students could do the job

and hone their skills all while explor-

ing their ancestral lands. Two years and

twenty students later, TYC has logged a

growing list of accomplishments.

What about the future? Sanchez is

passionate about carpentry and plans

to build his own house someday.

Shakespeare wants to work outdoors.

Whatever path these young men choose,

one thing is certain: They are gathering

experiences, skills, and contacts while

developing a can-do attitude. Whether

they pursue a career in the NPS or some-

thing entirely different, their summer

has been one of self-discovery, confi-

dence building, and a wider view of the

world—critical steps in crafting the life

they will lead once they leave home.

Positive but ChallengingStudents lack opportunities on the reservation and life there can be tough. Leaving family and familiarity behind is also hard. Some struggle with being more social or pushing themselves physically. For others, camping for a month couldn’t be further from their daily life back home. TYC shows what’s possible and offers the crew a sense of purpose and self-worth. Students feel good about getting paid for a job well done and knowing their work matters to the park. Many of them contributed their paycheck to the family income, proud to be able to help.

Message from President

Le s L i e Mat t s o n

I personally had never met Jerry and, because of our busy travel schedules, we struggled to find a time to get together. He decided that the best time was on a Saturday evening when I was to return from a week-long trip to Mexico.

I landed in Jackson and was greet-ed by down pouring rain and Jerry, who was there waiting for me when I walked off the airplane. He drove me to his office in town for a meet-ing. I had never had a job interview on a Saturday night and likely never will again. But this was how Jerry operated. He worked all the time and he was dedicated to the Foundation’s project in Grand Teton—it made complete sense to

him for us to meet on the one evening that our schedules over-lapped in Wyoming.

That first discussion was the start of a friendship that I will always cherish. Much has been written about Jerry’s enormous success in business, his vision for real estate developments, his passion for national parks, especially Grand Teton, and his pride in owning Lost Creek Ranch. Jerry served as the Foundation’s board chair for 11 years and continued to be involved by attending nearly every board meeting thereafter. His commitment to the park, leadership, and generosity are the reasons the Foundation is

the vibrant organization that it is today.

Three days before he passed away I was lucky enough to see Jerry and thank him for all he had done. He was sitting comfortably in a chair at his home at Lost Creek, looking at the Tetons that he cared for so deeply. I will miss this quiet, humble man. We honor his incredible vision and passion in the work the Foundation undertakes in Grand Teton, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

n May of 2004, I received a phone call from Grand Teton National Park Foundation’s board chair, Jerry Halpin, about joining the staff. The young organization had an ambitious plan to raise $13.6 million, which would supplement $8 million in federal funds to build a new visitor center in Grand Teton National Park.

ave you seen a red fox in Grand Teton lately? Chances are yes, as they seem to be more and more numerous in recent years. Many speculate that the presence of wolves is responsible. The idea is that since wolves compete with coyotes but not foxes, wolves displace coyotes and the red foxes fill the resulting voids. This has not been proven locally but the concept makes sense to wildlife ecologists.

There are five species of fox in North America, including the kit fox, grey fox, swift fox, and arctic fox, but only the red fox is found in Jackson Hole. Red foxes are one of the most widely distributed wild carnivores in the world, also inhab-iting Asia, Europe, and North Africa. Throughout their range they can be identified by a white-tipped tail, which is present regardless of their many color phases. These range from nearly pure black to the more familiar red with black

leggings, and everything in between. The so-called silver fox is a melanistic form of red fox.

Park biologists have recently documented increasing numbers of human habituated and food-conditioned foxes which seem to parallel perceived increases in the population. From animals panhandling in road pullouts, denning under park buildings, and harassing ice fishermen on Jackson Lake, these small, native canids are making their presence known.

Spurred by a rise in encounters such as these and a general lack of knowledge about red fox in the region, biologists began a new research project in the winter of 2016 to gain a better under-standing of red fox ecology and to address park management concerns focused on human safety and wildlife health.

Using box traps, 13 foxes have been captured over the past two winters. Biological samples collected from the animals are used to assess disease preva-lence (such as rabies), genetic lineage, and the degree to which natural and human foods are being utilized. Radio collars fitted to a small sample allow biologists to track fox movements and their habitat use, locate dens and document repro-ductive success, and follow other demo-graphic trends, such as survival rates. This information will help guide educational outreach and conservation actions. Our increased ecological knowledge will allow for continued opportunities to experi-ence, connect with, and be inspired by the wild lands and wild life that are unique here in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosys-tem, while simultaneously ensuring the preservation of this charismatic species.

Page 7: F ALL & W INTER TETON STEWARDS - Grand Teton National Park … · 2020-02-04 · in Grand Teton n May of 2004, I received a phone call from Grand Teton National Park Foundation’s

corporations and partnerships during

his impressive career, including the

development of the notable business

center of Tyson’s Corner in Virginia—

the 11th largest commercial district in

the United States.

Jerry was the driving force behind the

creation of Grand Teton National Park

Foundation in 1997, and worked close-

ly with the park’s superintendent at the

time—Jack Neckels—to gather a

group of influential locals to raise

private funds for a new visitor center

in the park. “He was ready to throw

himself into the organization on day

one, and it was very apparent to the

rest of us that we had our leader,” Rob

Wallace, founding board member, said.

The largest challenge of the young

organization was navigating the pub-

lic-private partnership with the Na-

tional Park Service to build a multi-mil-

lion-dollar visitor center. Jerry helped

secure an $8 million dollar matching

grant from the federal government to

help the project move forward. “For the

next few months, Jerry went door to

door at the Department of Interior ex-

plaining why this matching grant idea

made sense for all,” Rob Wallace said.

At the time, Jerry was one of the most

successful developers in the country.

“He was at his best when he sat politely

through meeting after meeting on how

to build a building in a national park.

He always thanked people for their time

and soldiered on to the next meeting

making new converts along the way,”

Rob Wallace said. “His quiet demeanor

and unassailable competence made us

all believe that success was the only

option.”

Jerry’s dream was realized when Craig

Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center

opened to the public in August 2007.

“We have great memories of Jerry’s

involvement in each and every design

meeting for the visitor center,” Peter

Bohlin, FAIA and Ray Calabro, FAIA

of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, said.

“His unwavering commitment to

do something extraordinary lifted

the project well beyond a typical

national park visitor center. As archi-

tects and national park enthusiasts,

we are indebted to Jerry for his vision

and support.”

Jerry’s extraordinary determination

paved the way for the Foundation’s

twenty years of successful partnership

with Grand Teton National Park

and contributed significantly to the

$65 million the organization has

raised since the first meeting in

Jerry’s living room more than two

decades ago. “Jerry was the bedrock

of the Foundation,” Jack Neckels,

former Grand Teton National Park

superintendent, said. “Without Jerry,

the organization might not exist.”

He was laid to rest at Lost Creek Ranch

looking toward the Teton Range that

he loved so much. Jerry will be greatly

missed, but his legacy will continue to

impact the millions of visitors to Grand

Teton for decades to come.

Preservation Work Ensures Longevity of Lucas-Fabian Homestead

esting on the edge of Cottonwood

Creek, the Geraldine Lucas Home-

stead-Harold Fabian Place is one

of Grand Teton’s hidden cultural gems.

Comprised of a handful of log buildings

with sweeping Teton views, the property

is historically significant and a favorite

destination among park visitors who

know of its existence. It was homesteaded

by Geraldine Lucas, an eccentric character

known for her large book collection

and distaste for the Snake River Land

Company. Years later, the homestead was

the summer residence of Josephine and

Harold Fabian, who ironically was the

Rockefeller lawyer responsible for many

of the Snake River Land Company land

deals. The property became part of Grand

Teton with the park expansion in 1950.

After decades of vacancy and exposure to

harsh weather conditions, the buildings

at Lucas-Fabian were in much-need of re-

pairs to ensure this historic treasure would

remain standing and safe for visitors to en-

joy. Thanks to the generosity and foresight

of Peggy and David Sokol who are partic-

ularly passionate about this site, work to

restore the homestead began in 2015.

The project at Lucas-Fabian had two

primary goals: stabilize buildings and

improve access. Park crews reroofed cab-

ins with historically used rolled-roofing,

repaired missing and broken shutters, and

performed half-log replacements on the

south side of the Russell Cabin—the larg-

est building on site. In addition, fungicide

and insecticide were applied to the cabins,

flashing was repaired around chimneys,

and broken windows and doors were re-

placed. As with all preservation work, the

project was approached with sensitivity to

the historic nature of the buildings as to

not impact the site’s unique character.

In addition to stabilization work, signif-

icant additions were made to improve

access. Bridges across Cascade Creek were

replaced, old road debris was removed

from the water, and trail was construct-

ed from the bike path to the cabins. The

access improvements made the property

ADA accessible from the bike path.

Building stabilization was completed in

partnership with Grand Teton’s cultural

resources staff and the Western Center

for Historic Preservation. Bridge and trail

work was completed by Grand Teton

National Park’s trail crew and Grand

Teton National Park Foundation’s Youth

Conservation Program. Preservation

work at the Lucas-Fabian historic district

will ensure that this incredible historic

resource continues to inspire and educate

park visitors well into the future.

historic preservation priorities, contact Cathy Wikoff

This has been an absolutely remarkable year in our partnership, and my sincere appreciation goes to the Foundation board, staff, and donors. As superinten-dent, I am very proud of our collabora-tive accomplishments and thrilled about our strategies and related future interests.

The work of the Foundation has a direct impact in inspiring new leaders and stewards of Grand Teton National Park, as well as the National Park Service. Every project and interest funded by the Foundation contributes toward impactful visitor experiences and services, and the protection and conservation of our many treasured resources. More importantly, we are mutually creating the next gener-ation of scientists, engineers, conserva-tionists, communicators, caretakers, and superintendents of these special places.

In thinking about all the outcomes that have been generated over the years, investing in human capital can some-times be overlooked. I believe that our employees, volunteers, stakeholders, and partners are our greatest resource. This powerful investment is visible in so many of the programs supported by the Foundation.

Connecting native youth to park lands through Tribal Youth Corps has been a tremendous success. It is exciting to see young tribal members learn new skills and generate outcomes on a landscape that was inhabited by their ancestors. Engaging diverse students and young adults from across the country and exposing them to this majestic landscape and conservation practices is extremely rewarding as well.

Foundation support designed to enhance visitor experiences and resource protection through a variety of volunteer groups, such as the Snake River Ambassadors, Hammer Corps, and String Lake and Wildlife brigades has exceeded expectations. In addition, support for individuals to assist with wildlife and fish monitoring and research, habitat restoration, historic structure stabiliza-tion and preservation, and recreational asset improvements is significant and greatly appreciated.

All of the outcomes generated from the Foundation’s efforts are invaluable, and the investment in people is priceless. On behalf of a grateful park and staff, thanks for a job well done!

s writer and historian Wallace Stegner said, “National parks are the best idea we ever had. They are absolutely American, absolutely democratic and they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” Through the work of the Foundation, America’s best idea is even better at Grand Teton National Park.A

A Special Thank YouKim Mills finished her tenure at the Foundation on September 30th after being a valued member of the team for over eight years. She was integral to the success of our visitor center and Jenny Lake campaigns, and helped introduce hundreds of young people to outdoor recreation, stewardship, and career opportunities through our Youth Engagement Initiative. Kim will be greatly missed by our staff and donors, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Thank you, Kim, for all you have done for the Foundation and to support Grand Teton National Park!

$1,500 funds a bear-resistant food storage box in Grand Teton National Park, with a 3 x 5” stainless steel plaque to honor your special person. They’ll receive an adorable teddy bear and information about why bear boxes are so important, wrapped in a festive box and tied with a bow. Your bear box will be placed at one of the park’s spectacular camp-sites. It’s sure to bring a smile to friends and family who want to keep Grand Teton’s bears wild and visitors safe. Thanks to donors, over 435 boxes have been installed to date, moving us closer to our goal of installing 1,000 bear boxes throughout Grand Teton National Park.

Visit

www.gtnpf.org/initiatives/wildlife to learn more about bears

and these life-saving lockers. Contact Cathy Wikoff at 307-732-0629
