A CPS “Rising Star” “School of Distinction”

For the second year in a row the CPS Department of Research, Evaluation

and Accountability has designated Bridge Elementary School as a “School of

Distinction”. “School of Distinction” is the highest rating earned by elemen-

tary and high schools. Schools earn this designation by exceeding three out of

four assessment requirements on four progress levels measured by CPS. Our

school exceeded growth expectations on all four levels in: ITBS School

Growth, ITBS Average Student Gain, ISAT School Growth, and No Child

Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measurements.

Our students, staff, and parents were further honored by receiving a

“Rising Star” school designation from CPS. Our school received this designa-

tion for exceeding requirements in all four progress measurements.

Congratulations and thank you to all the students, staff, and parents who

have worked so hard to earn our school the recognition it deserves.

Wow! CPS has

rated our school a

“School of Distinction”

for the second year in

a row. CPS has also

declared our school a

“Rising Star” (see pg.

1). You just can’t do

any better than that.

Our students, staff,

and parents have

worked really hard the-

se past years to earn

this honor. We have

the greatest group of

children teachers/

staff, and parents

that a school

could possess.

I am very proud

and honored to be a

part of the on-going

process that has

placed our school

within the top 10% of

all CPS schools. Great

things are happening

at our school. It truly

does take great peo-

ple to make great

schools.

Thank you so much

for all that you do to

make our school great.

Happy Holidays and Best

Wishes to all of the

Bridge School family,

FALL POEMS –RM 001

BUDDY TIME

Volume 4, Issue 1

Fall

I hear wind playing tag with the leaves.

I see birds flying south, but that’s not all I see.

I also see animals collecting food for the winter.

The taste of fall is like pumpkin pie floating through the sky.

Oh, how great we’re back at school!

Smells like veggies and crops on Thanksgiving.

By: Rosie Jurczak

My Fall Poem

I hear my feat crushing leaves.

It looks like lots of colors on the trees.

It tastes like the good turkey dinner.

I feel leaves dropping on my head.

It smells like good pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving dessert.

By: John Lozeau

Fall

Sounds like kids having fun playing in leaves.

Looks like the trees have a face and body.

Tastes like maple syrup from maple trees drizzling into my mouth.

Feels like air is making me fall back.

Smells like home cooked chocolate chip cookies.

By: Tiffani Kilmer

Mrs. Cutler’s fourth grade class and Mrs. Anderson’s first grade class are once again bud-

dies this year. The students have met once and made spooky Halloween bats. They will be

celebrating Thanksgiving by making an Indian corn project. A good time was had by all.

On November 4, 2004 rooms 001 and 002 visited The Art Insti-tute of Chicago. This was in conjunction with a program they are currently participating in due to a grant our Art teacher, Mr. Friend received. The Art Institute of Chicago and Art Resources in Teach-ing (A.R.T.) have combined their talents and resources to provide the children with a series of art lessons based on portraits. This in-cludes not only recognizing the various types of portraits but also instruction on how to correctly draw their own. As part of the program the participating classrooms were also invited to visit the Art Institute. The children thoroughly enjoyed all the various types of art forms they saw. Later on in their visit they were able to add several more portraits to the booklet they are cre-ating. A wonderful time was had by all. A special thank you to Mr. Eller our A.R.T. instructor and to Mr. Friend for including our rooms in his grant award.

November brings crisp weather, bare trees and Thanksgiving. It is a time to reflect on all of the

good things each of us has in our lives and also a time to be generous to those families who are less

fortunate. With this in mind the children in room 002 created sharing poems. Here is a small sam-

ple.

Over 300 Bridge students with perfect attendance for the first

quarter participated in our first “Perfect Attendance Dress Down

Day” event (Staff sponsor: Mrs. Selim). Students with perfect at-

tendance were given a letter “A” tag which allowed them to dress

out of uniform on November 24th. The Dress Down Day event will

be held each quarter to award students for their outstanding

school attendance. Students with perfect attendance will also re-

ceive a certificate for each quarter of perfect attendance. At the

end of the school year students with perfect attendance for the

year will be treated to a special event day of movies and treats.

Congratulations to all our students who participated in the first ev-

er “Perfect Attendance Dress Down Day”. We hope to see more

students participating next quarter!

Did you know that a tom (male turkey) can weight up to 50 lbs.?

Did you know that a Bratsville turkey weighs less than 10 lbs?

Did you know that Squanto died in 1622, just a year after the first Thanksgiving

feast?

Did you know that Pilgrim fathers were publicly punished for their children’s poor behavior?

You should know all these facts since the leading theme in the library this November was the first

Thanksgiving. We learned about the Pilgrims and the first thanksgiving through different media:

Squanto’s biography video, “Turkey that can fly and turkey that can’t fly”: a nonfiction book, the Pil-

grims of Plymouth movie. Students made illustrations related to this theme, which were displayed in

the library.

In December, the theme will be Winter Wonderland and the librarian is planning many exciting activi-

ties.

Our very own Lunchroom Manager, Mrs. Bar-

bara Comito, won second place in the first an-

nual city-wide Sodexho - CPS “Sweet &

Treat” bakeoff cooking contest. Mrs. Comito

won with her now world famous Almond Piz-

zele dessert. Congratulations Mrs. Comito! We

are very proud of you.

This year’s subject for the Illinois PTA Reflections art contest was “A Differ-

ent Kind of Hero”. Selected entries will proceed for judging at the district lev-

el, and possibly regional, state and national levels! Congratulations to the win-

ners: Michael Gajewski, Jessica Henmueller, Peter Kopczyk, Jonathan

Martinez, Dawid Niedojadlo, Kelly O’Donovan, Daniel Sparks, Agnes

Stanula, Hubert Troszczynski.

Also, Bridge School’s winter assembly “Winter Wonderland” will be Tuesday

December 14, 6:00 PM. Students are excited and busy learning their songs for

a spectacular presentation!

First Quarter Honor Roll students were treated to donuts and

drinks at the first ever “Breakfast of Champions”. The event spon-

sored by the Bridge Student Council (Teacher sponsors: Mrs.

Green/Mrs. Iammartino) was held on November 24th to honor

those students with outstanding academic performance. Honor

Roll students also signed a big banner that will be hung outside

the Bridge School office. The event is scheduled to be held each

quarter to honor the hardworking students who achieve Honor Roll

status. We hope to see even more students at the next “Breakfast

of Champions”!

Technology classes are in full swing during the Second Quarter at Bridge School. Our Computer Curriculum spans

from Kindergarten to Grade 8, and each class is scheduled for a weekly session in our well equipped and ever-

improving Computer Lab. Each student has a computer to work on in the Lab to develop his/her technology skills.

Although I have been the Bridge School Computer Teacher for only two weeks, in my humble opinion, Bridge has

the best school computer lab- and the best students!

Since the goal of computer class in the lower grades is to introduce the children to using the computer as a tool in

learning, the Primary students have already started with keyboard navigation, mouse and cursor operation and using a

web browser to navigate appropriate web sites independently. They will also use electronic drawing programs, and

math and reading games with letters and numbers to increase their abilities. While using educational software, the

younger children become comfortable with basic computer terminology, care of computers, learn how to turn a com-

puter off/on, using a mouse and beginning keyboard skills.

Middle and Upper grade students will concentrate on improving their keyboarding skills, and developing word pro-

cessing skills in MSWord, database development with ACCESS, and spreadsheet skills in EXCEL. Students will

learn proper file handling procedures, and gain experience in creating presentations in PowerPoint, both individually

and as group members. Multimedia presentations, desktop publishing and web design will also be introduced at mid-

dle grade levels and reinforced and developed in the upper grades. Since the goal of computer class in the middle and

upper grades is computer literacy, our students will be working to develop many computer skills. Additional topics of

discussion will be the Internet, viruses, and software piracy.

As an additional piece of news, most classrooms are getting new computer equipment very soon, maybe before the

printing of this newsletter. Internet connected PC’s and multipurpose printer/scanners will be a welcome addition to

these classrooms. Although we will continue to use Study Island in the Computer Lab, access will soon be available

on these classroom computers, with some friendly competition between classes, so stay tuned for updates!

FLASH! – EMAIL FOR STUDENTS! – it’s coming, details to follow in the near future! (No cost involved and Per-

mission Slips will be required)
