The Hispanic Student wel-
come program successfully
captured the excitement of the
campus. The program in-
cluded members and partici-
pation from the UC and local
communities. As one of the
program features, alongside
our hosting dignitaries of EPS
were presenters Jose Atiles
and Raul Fernandez. Respec-
tively, they spoke on behalf of
the GE Aviation, US. Like-
wise, representing UC were
Dr. Mitchell Livingston, Dean
Frank Bowen, Dr. Brandi Elli-
ott, and Dr. P. Eric Aber-
crumbie. The Hispanic Stu-
dent Welcome program ended
with a creative custom to the
piñata. Raffled as door prizes,
the piñatas were overly filled
with candy and additional hid-
den keepsakes that represented
the specialness of the Hispanic
cultural. Ethnic Programs and
Services shared in the sponsor-
ship with Latinos in Ac-
cion’ (LEA) for the Hispanic
Student Welcome program.
The Asian Student Welcome Program welcomes students of Asian descent to the Uni-versity of Cincinnati. Darwin T. Turner scholars Shivam Kedia and Priya Chawla were the event emcees. Noted guests were Dr. Mitchell Livingston and Dean Frank Bowen, who gave welcoming remarks on behalf of the University. Representing the student body were Lane Hart and Maesa Idries, who also welcomed the audience. The décor included laced
tables with colorful cloths with various pieces of Asian candy on top. There were also colorful wall displays representing the Asian culture. Other artistic features were a professional dance group, who featured Dar-win T. Turner scholars Mahima Venkatesh and Aanchal
Srivastava. There were also infor-mational segments to the program through a number of table exhibits. These exhibits came from several student organizations, the student life offices and various community organizations. The ROAR Campus Tour Guide, the Kendo Club, the Japanese American Student Society,
RAPP, the Student Alumni Council, the Career Development Center, Delta Phi Lambda, Hindu YUVA, the UC Asian Interest Fraternity Group and CADU-CEA UC all took part in the dis-plays. The Asian Student Wel-come was jointly sponsored by the African American Cultural and Resource Center, Ethnic Programs and Services and the Asian American Association.

Darwin T. Turner Scholars
Bearcats Block Party
this celebrated Turner ac-knowledgement helped to propel this meeting to an exciting start to the semes-ter! The Turner Ambassa-dors, EPS’s selective lead-ership group, also started off positively, as they pre-pared to remain the best and the brightest by par-ticipating in the EPS an-nual leadership retreat.
This year was the Darwin T. Turner Scholar’s largest class to date. While the 2012 – 2013 incoming class is the largest freshman class ever in the program’s history, a record breaking 42 freshman scholars topped the previous highest mark of 32 of last year. As the returning scholars re-connected during their first meeting of the semester,

Student Spotlight Elizabeth Delozier Congratulations to Elizabeth Delozier for being chosen for our student spotlight segment. Elizabeth’s tremendous in-volvement in various activities on campus, along with her aspirations in the area of di-versity, have earned her this recognition. Her accomplish-ments mainly come from be-coming a devoted, proud and spirited Bearcat. She loves football games and UC tradi-tions. While Elizabeth’s UC enthusiasm has helped to pro-pel her to becoming a top 10 finalist for homecoming court this year, she is eager to utilize her UC pride to earn the homecoming crown! Elizabeth is a 4th year Industrial Man-
agement and International Business major. A proud Dar-win T. Turner Scholar, she also loves learning about other cultures. She is both Filipina and Caucasian and has enjoyed becoming part of the Asian community here at UC. Says Elizabeth, “Through my work and involvement at UC, I've committed myself to the mis-sion of the Darwin T. Turner Scholars program. I promote diversity, inclusion and just community throughout our campus. Elizabeth also notes “From being a peer leader, to Greek life to Student Govern-ment, I've been working on ways to make the student ex-perience more diverse and
fulfilling for every Bearcat.“ Ms. Delozier’s personal goals also line up to her professional and educational ones. They are aspiring to establish a sustain-able Turner Ambassadors pro-gram that mentors Turner freshmen. With this goal, Elizabeth vows to promote a sense of community, pride, and spirit amongst all Turner scholars. Also, her professional goals consist of spending at least 3 years traveling and working in East Asia, South America, and Europe in global supply chain management. . Elizabeth is away on co-op and we anticipate her to return with the same UC vigor she left with! Congratulations Elizabeth!
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The Office of Ethnic Programs and Services also share in the celebra-tions of Hispanic Heritage Month by providing various programs on campus. In obser-vance of the Hispanic Heritage Month, the EPS & the Latinos en Acción (LEA) or-ganization will jointly sponsor a series of programs and events from September 17th to October 12th. The programs will consist of Hollywood Week & Not Just JLO, The Latino Voice in Politics, Inside the Greater Hispanic Community and Fun with LEA. Visit: http://www.uc.edu/eps.html for a complete list of programming dates, times and locations.
IDENTITY is a new student group that is building a com-munity for biracial, multiracial, and multi-ethnic individuals. However, it is not limited to individuals of different back-grounds. IDENTITY also wants to be the liaison between student groups and hopes to establish strong relationships with student leaders in the UC community.

The Office of Ethnic Programs and Services joins the University of Cincinnati in welcoming back Ronald Jackson,
our new dean of McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. A former Darwin T. Turner Scholar, and now, as a profes-
sional, one of UC’s newest faces on campus has replanted his roots in the ground where he
received his academic and professional trainings. During his remarks (after introduced at
the Akwaaba welcome program), Dr. Jackson made no hesitations in mentioning that his
own focus on teaching and mentoring came from the exceptional mentoring and instruction
he received while at UC. While further applauding many of UC greats for helping him to
become successful, Dr. Jackson made a more connected acknowledgement to Dr. Eric Aber-
crumbie for giving him the opportunity to become a scholar. Additionally, Dr. Jackson paid
a special tribute to the positive role of which the late Linda Bates Parker, past Director of
the Career Development Center, played in his success.
Welcome Home Dr. Ron Jackson
Look out for the many more
exciting events that EPS will
be hosting this coming Winter
Semester!

ory William’s resignation
from UC’s presidency (due to
personal reasons), Dr. Ono

Dr. Ono’s first major task in
his new role during convoca-
tion.
