IntroductionCongratulations! You've made a wise investment in an innovative product andyour personal safety. The FireAngel is one of a new generation of domesticlife safety products from FireAngel Limited, which combines the latesttechnology and innovative design to provide an aesthetically pleasing andeffective contribution to your fire safety.

The FireAngel range of products is constantly being improved and expanded. Please visit www.FireAngel.co.uk to find out about the latest additions to ourproduct range.

IMPORTANT: This user manual contains important informationregarding the operation of your FireAngel Smoke Alarm. If you areinstalling this smoke alarm for use by others, you must leave thismanual (or a copy of it) with the end user.

Sensor TechnologyYour FireAngel Smoke Alarm uses an ionisation type sensor to detect thepresence of smoke. Ionisation type smoke alarms are generally more effectiveat detecting fast, flaming fires which consume combustible materials rapidlyand spread fire quickly. To increase the level of protection you should alsoinstall optical (photoelectric) type smoke alarms that are more effective atdetecting slow burning fires, which can smoulder for hours before burstinginto flames.

For Maximum protection, use both types of smoke alarms on eachlevel of your home

FireAngel ApplicationWARNING: If your FireAngel smoke alarm is being installed into anew build property then the new building regulations apply. You canobtain further information from your local fire service/building controlat your local council offices. These sources generally provide advice onnew builds or projects that require planning permission.

WARNING: To comply with building regulations, and therecommendation of the UK fire services, there should be a minimumof one smoke alarm on each level of your property.

Your FireAngel Smoke Alarm will communicate with other alarms of the sametype if their ‘interconnect’ wires are connected together. This means that inthe event of smoke being detected by one unit, all other connected units willalso go into full alarm.

The FireAngel typically meets the minimum requirements for family living unitsin new and existing buildings, as long as at least one unit is installed on eachfloor/level of your property.

In order to achieve the earliest fire warning, we recommend that a FireAngelis fitted in all rooms where the temperature is normally between 40°F (4ºC)and 100°F (30ºC). The type of smoke alarm used in each location should beappropriate to the environment. Check the section on ‘Positioning’ to ensurethat the FireAngel is to be correctly positioned for the particular dwelling intowhich it is intended to be installed.

The alarm positions shown above are based on typical homes.Construction and layout of individual dwellings will vary, so thisshould be regarded only as a guide. Check with your local firestation for further guidance.

PositioningIt is recommended that your FireAngel is NOT to be fitted in the followinglocations.

• Bathrooms, shower-rooms, areas close by, and other very damp or humidareas, where the moisture can cause unwanted alarms.

• Kitchens and air streams near kitchens. Kitchens should be protected withself-contained Heat Alarms, as the combustion particles from cooking inkitchens will result in unwanted alarms and permanent contamination ifSmoke Alarms are used.

• Areas where combustion particles may be present such as garages andboiler rooms. These areas should be well ventilated.

• In areas where excessive dust or dirt could contaminate the sensingchamber, making it over sensitive or impairing smoke entry.

• In areas where the ambient temperature is not controlled and mayregularly drift below 4°C (40°F) or above 38°C (100°F) e.g. unheatedbuildings, open attic spaces.

• Very dirty, dusty or greasy areas.

• In very draughty areas, such as close to ceiling fans or fresh air vents.Draughts can blow smoke away from the alarm.

• In insect infested areas. Insects can clog openings to the sensing chamber, preventing smoke entry or causing unwanted alarms.

• Within 30cm (12") of a fluorescent light fitting, which emits electrical‘noise’ that can prevent correct alarm operation.

• In wall positions that are more than 30cm (12") away from the ceiling (see‘How to install your FireAngel’).

• In 'dead air' spaces (see following diagram).

• Within 30cm (12") of light fittings or other ceiling based obstructions.

What are the limitations of mySmoke Alarm?

Your FireAngel is designed to alert you by sounding an alarm when it sensessmoke, i.e. it can only sense smoke and alert you if smoke reaches it! If a firedevelops in an area remote from the location of the FireAngel such as anotherroom or another level, smoke may not reach the FireAngel in sufficient time orquantity to sense and alert you to the danger. (We recommend that as aminimum you install a FireAngel on every floor of your property whereregulatory requirements permit, and consider fitting additional units in otherareas where a smoke alarm is not generally considered essential.)

Up to 12 FireAngels can be interconnected. The maximum length of theinterconnect wire must be less than 200m. If a larger number of alarms areinterconnected, the presence of smoke in one alarm may not becommunicated to the others.

The FireAngel cannot be used to provide primary fire detection in commonareas used by different residents such as blocks of flats and hotels.

The FireAngel may not alarm before a fire causes damage, injury or death, asthe smoke may not reach the FireAngel in time. Examples include smoking inbed and violent gas explosions. The FireAngel may not respond in areasonable time if it is not installed in the best position, or if furniture or otherobstacles are located between the FireAngel and the fire.

The FireAngel requires an ac electrical supply for its normal operation and torecharge its integral battery. If the electrical supply fails or is removed the unitwill continue to operate on its fully charged battery supply for 45 days. TheFireAngel will advise you of a low battery condition by emitting an audible'chirp' once per minute. When this occurs you must restore the electricitysupply to the unit within 7 days to maintain operation and recharge theinternal battery. The supply must be turned on for at least 4 hours to give aminimum of 7 days charge. To fully recharge your FireAngel to enable 45 daysoperation the supply must be turned on for a further 8 hours.

Smoke Alarms are designed to alert you with an audible alarm at a levelspecified by BS 5446 part 1 - 2000. Closed doors, walls and high ambientnoise levels will reduce this level. Temporary or permanently impaired hearingmay result in the alarm not being heard. Stereos, traffic and other loudsources may also prevent the alarm being heard. Heavy sleepers and residentsunder the influence of alcohol or drugs may also not hear or respond to thealarm. Test and check that you can hear the alarm in all circumstances. If indoubt install additional smoke alarms as required, which should beinterconnected if possible.

WARNING: The FireAngel is not suitable for alerting hearing impairedresidents. We recommend that specially designed warning systems beinstalled that will alert hearing impaired residents.

9

WARNING: The FireAngel employs the latest technology and is LPCBcertified as being compliant with all the relevant British Standards. However, as with any electronic product it may fail and may notsense all types of fire within sufficient time to alert you of the dangerand provide adequate time for your escape. In order to maximise yourlevel of safety always test your FireAngel frequently to ensure it is infull working order.

Your FireAngel is only suitable for use in domestic/residential applications ascovered in this manual. It is not suitable for commercial or industrialapplications. It is designed to sense smoke and alert you. It will not sensecarbon monoxide, flames, heat or gas. It will not prevent or extinguish fires.

The FireAngel has a limited life and should not be considered as a substitutefor life or property insurance. Like all electronic equipment, it can wear out orfail. It should be tested weekly and replaced immediately in the event offailure, and replaced every ten years regardless.

IMPORTANT: This product should be installed in accordance with thecurrent edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, if in doubt contact aqualified electrician.

How to install your FireAngelIMPORTANT: Make sure you have read and understood thismanual before installing your FireAngel.

IMPORTANT: Before starting the installation ensure that theelectricity supply has been isolated at the power distributionboard/consumer unit. Switching the light off at the light switchwill NOT isolate the power.

WARNING: Failure to turn off the power before installation mayresult in serious electrical shock, injury or death.

1. PreparationCarefully make access through the ceiling or wall toallow the passage of the wires and any terminals andconnector boxes that are to be fitted.

Use the mounting plate as a guide when marking thearea that is required for access. If mounting on a wallensure mounting holes are vertical.

2. Install Mounting PlateFit the FireAngel mounting plate to the ceiling or wall.

If the FireAngel is to be installed on a wall, ensure thatthe mounting plate is the correct way round (arrowpointing upwards).

IMPORTANT: The mounting plate must be securely mounted to asuitable load-bearing surface.

WARNING: Exposed and vulnerable wires present a risk of fireand electric shock. All wires and connections must beadequately insulated and protected.

3. Connect wiringThis product meets the requirements of the LPCB approval to BS5446-1:2000only when installed with a permanent live feed

Consumer InformationBS5446-1: 2000 makes provision for either permanently powered mains alarmsor battery powered alarms. The innovative ‘hybrid’ nature of this FireAngelmakes it possible to operate the smoke alarm from a switch live feed. Atpresent the British standard contains no requirements for this mode ofoperation and because of this the LPCB approval can only apply to thisFireAngel when wired to a permanent live feed.

The FireAngel can be wired in a number of different ways to suit your specialrequirements. You have the following choices:

a) Standard - Permanent connection to the permanent live and also theswitched live from the light switch. This is the recommended method, as theinternal battery will be kept fully charged. You can test or reset your FireAngelby flicking a light switch within the circuit you have installed the alarm or byusing the test/reset button on the alarm itself. See diagram on page 12.

b) Switched – Power taken from a switched light fitting. This method can beused if it is not convenient to access a permanent live supply wire. The sameTest and reset features are available, but the light fitting must be used for atleast 2 hours a week to ensure the internal battery is charged. See diagram onpage 13.

c) Limited – Permanent battery charging connection only. This has theadvantage of keeping the internal battery fully charged under normalconditions, but does not allow the FireAngel to be tested or reset using a lightswitch; the test/reset button on the alarm must be used for this purpose. Please follow the wiring diagram on page 12, however, the connection to theswitched live is not made in this configuration. This configuration is usedmostly where switched live of a nearby lighting circuit is unavailable henceany secure permanent live connection can be used.

NOTE: On all wiring configurations the white interconnect wire neednot be connected if the alarms are not required to communicate witheach other.

IMPORTANT: If the interconnect function is not used then alarmsWILL NOT communicate with each other (detection of smoke in onealarm will NOT force others into alarm).

Operation

Low Battery Condition

IMPORTANT: Your FireAngel requires an ac electrical supply torecharge its integral battery. Where the Standard and Limited wiringoptions are used, the battery will be maintained in a fully chargedstate as long as the electrical supply and connections are reliable. For Switched wiring option, only connect to light fittings that areused regularly; your FireAngel requires the light to be turned on inthis case for a total of approximately 2 hours per week (minimum) to remain in its fully charged state.

If the light is not used or the ac electrical supply is removed your FireAngelwill continue to operate in ‘standby’ (waiting for smoke) on its fully chargedbattery supply for 45 days.

Should your FireAngel enter a low battery condition, the unit will emit anaudible 'chirp' once per minute. When this occurs you must restore theelectricity supply to the unit to maintain operation. The green light next to thetest button should be on continuously when the electricity supply isconnected.

Following restoration of the mains supply the FireAngel batteries will rechargeto full capacity from a low battery alarm condition within 12 hours.

IMPORTANT: The Failsafe design of your FireAngel means that failureto restore the electrical supply may result in the FireAngel eventuallyentering a full alarm condition. Should this situation occur yourFireAngel would require a full 12 hour recharge before correct futureoperation is restored.

What to do in case of fire inyour home

If you have made a family escape plan and practiced it with your family, youhave increased their chances of escaping safely. Go over the following ruleswith your children each time you have fire drills. This will help everyoneremember them in case of a real emergency.

• Don't panic; stay calm. Your safe escape may depend on thinking clearlyand remembering what you have practiced.

• Notify every member in the residence of the fire.

• Get out of the house as quickly as possible. Follow a planned escaperoute. Do not stop to collect anything or to get dressed.

• Feel the doors to see if they are hot. If they are hot, do not open them -use an alternative escape route.

• Stay close to the floor. Smoke and hot gases rise.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth (wet if possible). Take short, shallow breaths.

• Keep doors and windows closed. Open them only if you have to in orderto escape.

• Meet at your planned meeting place after leaving the house. Carry out aheadcount.

• Call the Fire brigade on 999 as soon as possible from outside your house- it’s free! If possible use a neighbours phone or call box rather than amobile phone (as the location can be traced from the number if the line islost).

• Give the address and your name.

• Never go back inside the building until a member of the fire service hastold you it is safe to do so.

Contact your local Fire Brigade. They will give you more ideas about how tomake your home safer from fires and how to plan your family's escape.

How to make your Home SaferInstalling smoke alarms is only one step in protecting your family from fires. You must also take steps to reduce the chances of fires starting in your home.If a fire does start, you must increase your chances of escaping. To have agood fire safety program you must:

1. Install Smoke Alarms properly. Carefully follow ALL the Instructions In thismanual. Keep your Smoke Alarms clean, and test them every week. SMOKE ALARMS THAT DO NOT WORK WILL NOT ALERT YOU.

2. Replace your Smoke Alarms immediately if they are not working properly.

3. Follow fire safety rules, and prevent hazardous situations:

• Use smoking materials properly. Never smoke in bed.

• Keep matches and cigarette lighters away from children.

• Store flammable materials in proper containers. Never use them near anopen flame or sparks.

• Keep electrical appliances and wiring in good condition. Do not overloadelectrical circuits.

• Keep cookers, fireplaces, chimneys, and barbecue grills grease free. Makesure they are properly installed, away from any combustible materials.

Page 29: EZ-212 Manual

• Keep portable heaters and open flames such as candles away fromcombustible materials.

• Do not allow rubbish to accumulate inside your home as this providessources for combustion.

• Keep a supply of extra batteries on hand for your battery powered SmokeAlarms. (Note that the FireAngel does not need replacement batteries).

4. Develop a family escape plan and practice it with everyone in thehousehold, including small children if you have them.

• Draw a floor plan of your home, and find two ways to exit from eachroom. There should be one way to get out of each bedroom withoutopening the door, and alternate means of escape from an upper floor inthe event of the stairs being blocked (such as a fire escape).

• Make sure everyone recognises the smoke alarm signal and knows how toreact to it.

• If there are small children to consider it is important to explain to themwhat the smoke alarm signal means. Teach them that they must beprepared to leave the home by themselves if necessary. Show them how tocheck to see if doors are hot before opening them. Show them how tostay close to the floor and crawl if necessary. Show them how to use analternative exit if the door is hot and should not be opened.

• Decide on a meeting place a safe distance from your house. Again, if youhave them, make sure that all your children understand that they shouldgo and wait for you there if there is a fire.

• Hold fire drills at least every 6 months to make sure that everyone, including small children, know what to do to escape safely.

• Know where to go to call the Fire Brigade from outside your home.

Contact your local Fire Brigade. They will give you more ideas about how tomake your home safer from fires and how to plan your family's escape.
