MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

The Toowoomba Preparatory School is a stand-alone, coeducational, junior boarding and day school. Our strong academic programs and nurturing environment mean our students live life to the full now and at the same time are prepared for the future.

Toowoomba Prep has a long history of providing an exceptional education for primary aged students, preparing them for secondary schooling. We are also leaders in the field of Early Years education, providing strong foundations in

literacy, numeracy and inquiry, and giving our students the advantage of an excellent start to their life-long learning. In 2012 we proudly welcomed our first group of Kindergarten students into the school.

Our Early Years Learning Centre programs involve fostering children’s creativity and natural curiosity. They encourage children to learn through discovery and play, and they guide them to be active participants, innovative thinkers and keen learners. Our teachers are enthusiastic and experienced early years educators who have a passion for providing the best learning experiences for their students.

We welcome you into our school community and look forward to providing your child with outstanding preparation for future learning.

Mrs Sandra Hawken

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF LOWER PRIMARY

Our Early Years Learning Centre provides the essential foundational years in the Lower Primary Department. The Lower Primary Department includes Kindergarten, Prep, Year 1 and Year 2. Our goal is for every student to reach their potential by being confident and involved learners who engage in quality, approved Early Years curriculum and co-curricular experiences. The Arts, Languages and Physical Educational programs are successfully introduced and developed within the Lower Primary years of schooling, providing students with rich learning opportunities and

effective communication skills. Technology skills and competencies are encouraged through the variety of relevant digital resources that students are able to access daily. Students develop a strong sense of identity and connectedness within the school and local community through our Pastoral Care Program and Lower Primary weekly and yearly events such as Chapel, Assembly, Performances, Athletics Carnivals, Under 8’s Week and Book Week. We invite you to be involved in the excitement and innovative twenty-first century education that The Toowoomba Preparatory School offers for your child. Mrs Michele Wright

Our Philosophy The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre aims to reflect the values of the School’s community in all its diversity, and is committed to excellence in the provision of education and care programs. Our Philosophy statement includes the service’s values, beliefs and understandings about children and the ways they learn, families and the role of educators. It guides all aspects of the Early Years Learning Centre practices and programs including the Kindergarten and the Early Years Learning Care Programs. Staff members, parents, children and community members contribute to the writing and regular review of our philosophy statement. We believe that each child has the right to be an active member of the community in which they live, to express their opinions and have their views considered in any decision that may affect them. We believe that the best interests of the children and their right to play as well as learn and develop in a safe and nurturing environment is the primary consideration in all decision making at the Early Years Learning Centre and is visible in the actions, interactions and daily work with the children. We believe that children are unique individuals and active learners from birth and through rich, engaging environments and meaningful interactions; we can build a foundation for successful lifelong learning. We believe that as children are supported to become environmentally responsible and show respect for their environment they will value and implement sustainable practices. We acknowledge that parents and families are the child’s primary nurturers and that respectful, collaborative relationships strengthen the capacity and efforts of families and the staff to support their children and promote each child’s health and wellbeing. We believe that the intrinsic worth of all children and their families, their strengths and their right to equitable access and participation in the community is clearly visible in all aspects of the Early Years Learning Centre. We believe that the staff’s primary role is to guide, facilitate and encourage children’s learning. Educators document and record the child’s developmental journey throughout the year through written observations, photographs and work samples. We believe that as educators participate in intentional teaching, researching and learning together with the children and their families that very high quality outcomes for the children and Centre can be achieved. We believe that the staff utilise positive behaviour guidance strategies to assist the children in developing the skills to regulate their own emotions.

ABOUT THE TOOWOOMBA PREPARATORY SCHOOL History of The Toowoomba Preparatory School The Toowoomba Preparatory School was founded in 1911 as a private school for primary boys. It was acquired by the Church of England (now Anglican Church of Australia) in 1920. Today, Toowoomba Prep is a coeducational boarding and day primary school. It has traditionally enjoyed a strong link with rural Queensland. Since 1972, the school has been coeducational. Educational Program The Early Years Learning Framework and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines inform the development of our Morning Care, Kindergarten programs, Afternoon Care and Vacation Care Programs for 3 to 5 year olds. The My Time, Our Place Framework guides the Morning and Afternoon Care and Vacation Care for school aged children.

The Early Years Learning Framework – Belonging, Being and Becoming The Early Years Learning Framework is the basis of our program. It is a living and learning framework that invites children and adults to take part in a journey – a journey that requires commitment to potentials, possibilities, aspirations and inspirations. Fundamental to the framework is a view of children’s lives as characterised by ‘Belonging, Being and Becoming’. The acknowledgement of children as competent and capable learners and the significant role that adults play in optimising and enhancing children’s living and learning experiences is evident throughout the Early Years Learning Framework. Adults and children share responsibility for the learning process through interaction, negotiation and collaboration. My Time, Our Place Framework

The My Time, Our Place Framework is our guide to support the planning and organisation of programs for school. The Framework takes a holistic approach with focussed attention on children’s physical, personal, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing as well as cognitive aspects of learning (My Time and Our Place, p.13). The fundamental elements of the Early Years Learning Framework and My Time, Our Place Framework: Belonging, Being and Becoming, frame the following learning outcomes:

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world

Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators.

Our Programs

Our educators actively encourage all students and families to contribute to the planning of learning experiences for all our programs, based on their interests and ideas. There is continuity of learning between the three programs, which provides children with quality play and leisure activities. Global, national, community and school events are incorporated within our daily, weekly, term and Vacation Care planning.

The Importance of Play The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre recognises the value and richness of play as a stimulus for children’s learning and their ongoing engagement in meaningful experiences. As children play they approach new and revisited experiences with interest, ownership, empowerment and possibility. Educators create ‘Play Plans’ on a daily basis with the children to document and encourage their personal and group interests. Through play at Kindergarten your child is:

learning about and engaging in the community in which they live. Building an understanding and respect for their own and others’ social and cultural heritage.

learning early literacy skills, including listening to and being involved with fiction and non-fiction texts. Gaining an awareness of the alphabet, initial sounds and rhyming words.

learning early numeracy skills through working with a range of manipulative materials to count, represent, order, sequence, solve problems and follow directions.

recognised as competent and capable.

The Arts, Physical Education, Languages and Christian Education Music and Drama Children will participate in a specialist music and drama lesson within the Centre on a weekly basis. Children will be given the opportunity to learn simple melody, beat and rhythm, be introduced to a range of instruments and enjoy singing songs. Physical Education The children are involved in a daily Smart Moves Perceptual Motor Program and Let’s Get Moving Program within the Early Years Learning Centre. They are given the opportunity to participate in the Lower Primary Gymnastics Program, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. This supports the Early Years Learning Centre promotion of active and healthy lifestyles.

Christian Education Christian Education lessons occur throughout the week for students to learn about Christian values and building positive relationships. Each week students will be introduced to a selection of Bible stories as well as songs focusing on Christian values. In Term 3 and 4 the children attend weekly Lower Primary Chapel services in St Aidan’s Chapel.

French Small group specialist French lessons will occur once a week. Students will have the opportunity to learn simple French words, songs and rhymes.

Library Attendance The children will participate in weekly visits to the library. This will enable and foster their love of books, literacy, technology and their sense of belonging in the school community.

Wider School Involvement Students from the Early Years Learning Centre will be involved in the Lower Primary Department activities including the Lower Primary Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals, Under 8’s Week, The Exhibition of Children’s Art, Grandparents’ Day, Easter Extravaganza, Fathers’ and Mothers’ Day activities, Book Week and our annual Carol Service at St Luke’s Church.

Individual and Digital Portfolios The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre’s trained and qualified staff strives to capture your child’s learning and thinking in our unique ‘My Learning Journey’. These portfolios are more than a memory or keepsake of your child’s time. Not only do they provide an insight into your child’s learning, they also make the quality of our teaching practice visible to you. These portfolios are a collaborative effort and will be available to families and children. They provide children with an opportunity to revisit and reflect on past experiences; record their learning, including their emerging literacy and numeracy skills, and provide our teachers with the knowledge they need to ensure your child’s time with us is full of wonder and possibility. You are encouraged to be a co-participant in three-way communication (i.e. child, parent and educator) and contribute photos, stories, art works or any memorabilia that tells a story about your child’s life and their learning journey.

Documenting the Curriculum Through careful observation, documentation and critical reflection, teachers gather information to determine the ideas and potential experiences that may emerge throughout your child’s day. Our Educators adopt a reflective approach to planning with open ended, retrospective and shared templates that are flexible and open to possibility. Planning is a continuous and collaborative process occurring within the program as children and adults together create opportunities for living and learning through the spontaneous and unpredictable encounters that occur in the here and now of every context. Our Educators will support children to become involved in what is interesting and meaningful to them. Parents and guardians are invited to discuss the activities and experiences provided as part of our learning programs and the goals to be achieved through our curriculum. Please ask the Educator for more detailed information about your child’s learning and development and how we collaborate to foster your child’s learning opportunities.

Inclusive Philosophy The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre appreciates, respects and encourages individuality and interdependence of all children, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and children with a disability or an additional need.

Children with Additional Needs The Early Years Learning Centre provides an inclusive environment and program to meet the different and diverse needs of all children and their families accessing our service. Following an interview with the parent and child, the Head of School and the Director of Lower Primary, together with the parent/s, will collaborate to discuss possible program plans and modifications where appropriate. Enrolment in the program will be based on what program the Kindergarten can offer that is best suited to the needs of the child. The sharing of information between the teaching team and the child’s medical and support services is encouraged in order to support the child’s total inclusion.

Cultural Diversity The Early Years Learning Centre recognises and celebrates the multicultural nature of our community and aims to provide an environment and curriculum of acceptance towards all people. We value each child and family’s culture and beliefs. All parents are encouraged to communicate any concerns or considerations with staff upon enrolment and on a daily basis.

Equity The Early Years Learning Centre is committed to and firmly believes that experiences in the early childhood period have a significant impact on later childhood and adult life. We provide a learning environment in which all children are encouraged to engage in a range of experiences which will promote their optimal development, and the opportunity to reach their individual potential for living a contributing and fulfilling life.

Formation of Print As children begin to show an interest in print and the writing of their names it is important that the appropriate use of both upper and lower case letters is used as well as the correct font. This allows children the opportunity to confidently explore the written word that will become more familiar once formal education is commenced. If the appropriate format is modelled from the beginning, children are able to consolidate both recognition and formation of one format and consolidate this over time, rather than needing to alter their practice at a later stage.

Arrivals and Departures The Regulations state that each child must be delivered to the Centre and collected from the Centre by an adult over 18 years of age. For this purpose an adult is defined as a person accompanying a child arriving at or leaving a child care centre, including the child’s parent who is not yet an adult. Alternative arrangements can be made by the parents, however, these must be in writing and must indicate who else may deliver and/or collect their child from the Centre. It is permissible for you to arrange for an adult other than yourself to collect and drop off your child (only if you have given your written consent for them as indicated on your child’s enrolment).

Signing In/Out The Regulations state that our Sign In/Out procedure requires the following information: parent’s/guardian’s name, sign and specify the time of arrival and name, sign and specify the time of departure of their child/ren each day. The Government’s Department of Education, Employment

and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), may cancel Child Care Benefits (CCB) should you fail to comply with this practice.

Settling-in procedures When entering a new environment, the parent and child need time to adjust. To assist with a smooth introduction into the Early Years Learning Centre, the following suggestions are offered.

Visiting After visiting the Centre for your interview, your child will have gained some impressions. Talk about these together so that your child feels informed about his/her new surroundings. Try to visit the Centre again before your official starting date. We have organised Transition Play times the week prior to the Kindergarten Program commencing. Children who attend only the Morning, Afternoon and Vacation Care sessions are invited to visit before their official commencement date. This will enable your child to become more familiar with the environment and staff. By spending time at the Centre with you, your child will see that you are comfortable here and are interested in what happens at the Centre.

First day Each child is unique and will cope with the first day in his/her own way. When you feel that your child is comfortable and you are ready to leave, let the staff know so that they can offer support to your child. Say goodbye and tell your child when you will be back. Do not prolong the farewell as this will cause more trauma for your child. Please call the Centre to ensure your child has settled well once you have left. Anytime through the day that you are anxious about your child, phone the Centre for an update of his/her wellbeing.

Collecting your child Try to return on time for the first day as a few minutes can be a long time for a child. The staff will give you a thorough report on how the first day proceeded. Showing your enthusiasm about what your child tells or shows you can really help with the settling-in process.

Absences Should your child be unwell at the beginning of the day, he/she should not be sent to the Early Years Learning Centre. Please contact School Reception to notify us of your child’s absence. If your child is likely to be away for some time, excluding illness, you are asked to notify the Head of School in writing. This also applies to the beginning and end of any term, and before and after long weekends.

Collection Procedure We ask for your cooperation by collecting your child by 5:30pm. If there is an emergency and you are unable to collect your child on time, please make contact with the school as soon as possible. If you are calling outside the School Office hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm, please phone the Early Learning Centre directly on 07 4639 8142.

Uniform Requirements All students attending the Early Years Learning Centre are expected to wear the correct and complete uniform for daily attendance at school and for sports activities. It is hoped that all students (with the help of their parents), will take pride in their personal appearance and thus ensure that the uniform is complete, fits well, is clean and tidy and in a good state of repair. The children are expected to have neat, tidy hair with girls wearing their hair tied back if below collar length. School ribbons and clips are to be worn and may be purchased from C@PS.

Sheets The children require 2 cot sized sheets, including a flat sheet and fitted sheet in a drawstring cloth bag or pillow case.

Sheets will be sent home at the end of each week to be washed. Children may also like to bring a small cushion and one small cuddly toy. Please ensure that sheets are named. Please include a small blanket for the cooler months during Terms 2 and 3.

Food Requirements Parents are required to provide Morning Tea and Lunch in a named lunchbox. Morning Tea We suggest fresh or dried fruit, raw vegetables, cheese or yoghurt. Lunch A nourishing, wholesome lunch of fresh food is also desirable – sandwiches, baked beans, chicken, ham, tuna, salad, cheese, crackers, fruit salad, fresh fruit, yoghurt are good options. We recommend that children drink water during this time rather than cordial and juice. Please always send a named water bottle for your child even though water is available to children at all times during their day. To encourage good nutritional habits, please do not send chips, lollies, soft drinks, roll ups or chocolate products. Afternoon Tea Afternoon Care Sessions will provide a healthy afternoon tea comprising of fresh fruit and vegetables along with a savoury choice such as biscuits and cheese, pikelets, cracker with toppings and fruit muffins as examples. Allergies Due to children with allergies enrolled in the school, we ask parents to not send any food containing nuts. Lunch Box note We encourage parents to send children’s food in small containers or compartments inside their lunchbox to limit the use of plastic wrap and rubbish, being an environmentally conscious centre.

Rest Time Rest periods are a session when children have a chance to relax and engage in a period of quiet time. Staff will be sensitive to the needs of your child and will provide quiet time activities to ensure children’s rest periods are positive. Information will be displayed which indicates whether your child has had a sleep.

Treasures from Home We would greatly appreciate toys being brought from home are limited to those received on a special occasion. Toys or jewellery can often get lost or broken when brought to Kindergarten, so it saves anxiety if these are kept safely at home. Your child is encouraged to bring to Kindergarten any type of interesting specimen or object – rocks, shells, insects, for example, to enrich the program,

Your child is encouraged to bring to Kindergarten any type of interesting specimen or object – rocks, shells, insects, for example, to enrich the program,

or special photos of family members, events. Please be careful to provide air holes for insects to breathe. Plastic containers are safer than glass.

Birthdays A birthday is a very special time for every child. On this special occasion you are welcome to bring along a cake, preferably cupcakes for your child to share with their class. Children whose birthdays fall in the holidays may share their birthday before or after the holidays. It is important that birthday invitations are only distributed within the centre when every child from the program is invited. Your child’s educator will be more than happy to provide you with a full listing of first names of the children in the program. A sense of belonging within the community is very important; no child should ever come to Toowoomba Prep and feel they are excluded.

Excursions/Incursions On occasions, the children will be taken on excursions/incursions to complement the curriculum. At other times visitors will be invited to the centre to offer the children an extension of their current program. Parents will be notified of forthcoming excursions through letters and signs within the Early Years Learning Centre. We ensure that we have a sufficient adult:child ratio when we go outside the EYLC area. Parents will be invited to share these valuable learning experiences. All excursions and transport arrangements are carefully planned so parents can assist with planning by indicating well in advance whether they intend to participate in these excursions. Permission slips and Risk Management Plans will be issued for each excursion and must be signed by parent(s) prior to departure. Excursions provide children opportunities outside the Centre to expand learning and transfer expectations into a new setting. Excursions present opportunities both at the school and in the wider community to support a seamless transition into School life. Children also develop a sense of responsibility in relation to organising themselves for this day, taking responsibility for such items as library bags and drink bottles.

Communication with Families Open, supportive communication between school and home is very important if children are to receive the optimal benefits from their education. The School sees itself as a community of students, teachers and parents where the correct emphasis is placed upon effective communication. When parents wish to discuss their child then the class teacher is the first point of contact in any matter concerning their child’s educational well-being. Please feel free to discuss your child’s day to day issues with the educator. If you wish to speak about your child’s progress or any concerns please arrange a mutually agreeable meeting time out of sessions. We communicate with you as a family in a number of ways. These include regular newsletters delivered through your child’s communication book or emailed to families who have email facilities, foyer displays, our website and parent information boards which inform you of the Centre program and events. Throughout the room you will find creative displays of the children’s work and photos of special activities. The school also emails a fortnightly newsletter, Prep News, which covers activities and information for all year levels.

Concerns, Complaints and Suggestions In our Community Kitchen we have a Compliments and Comments box where you able to provide constructive feedback. Having a procedure to follow suggestions or concerns, encourages and

allows issues to be dealt with thoroughly, comprehensively and with sensitivity towards all concerned. Please follow these guidelines should you have any queries or concerns. All enquiries regarding the program or individual children should be directed towards the Educator concerned and then the Director of Lower Primary in the first instance. If necessary, issues will then involve the Head of School.

Parent Involvement Parent participation is fostered and welcomed throughout the Early Years Learning Centre programs. We value parent volunteer involvement with excursions, special events, assistance with cleaning and contributing their talents and interests in our programs. Throughout the year, parents will be invited to attend social events. These are organised, not only to support our program, but also to be informative and encourage parents to get to know one another. We have organised ‘Conversation and Coffee Evenings’ where we discuss early childhood topics. We also have Feedback Sessions where you are able to contribute ideas and thoughts for our Early Years Learning Centre. If you have suggestions for any of these, please let us know. Remember, you are always welcome in the Centre at any time, to assist or share something with the children.

Parent/Visitor Code of Conduct Our Parent/Guardian and Visitor Code of Conduct states that upon entry to the Early Years Learning Centre you will abide by the following:

Demonstrate honest, fair and respectful interactions with all staff, children and others. Support school staff in maintaining a safe learning environment for all students. Cooperate with the school to achieve the best outcomes for your child. Initiate and maintain constructive communication and relationships with school staff

regarding your child.

Visitors, Students and Volunteers The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre believes it has a responsibility to the development of tomorrow’s teachers. From time to time, Universities and TAFE colleges request the placement of student teachers as part of their training process at the School. The acceptance of these placements is based on the children’s needs and the program during the period of placement. Students are always under the supervision of the teacher in charge of the class. Volunteers are also welcome in the Kindergarten. However, these volunteers must comply to the laws governing volunteers working with children in the community.

Photos On occasion your child may be photographed participating within the day to day activities we provide at The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre. Parents are consulted and required to give written permission for these photos to be used within the service as part of our programming process. The children take great pride in having their day to day lives documented in this way. If photos are taken at any other time or for use in any other project such as marketing material for the service or if we have a student teacher who wants to conduct a child profile as part of their studies, parents will be consulted regarding the Public Acknowledgment statement signed as part of the enrolment process and a further Media Release form may be required.

Priority of Access and Non-Discriminatory Access When children enter an Early Childhood setting, they bring with them a rich variety of cultural and social backgrounds and experiences. The Toowoomba Preparatory School recognises the individuality of each child and family and observes a policy of acceptance regardless of race, creed, gender, disability, class or culture. Our policy is to provide non-discriminatory access to children. We do not exclude children from other races or cultural backgrounds, or those who have physical disabilities.

Confidentiality All personal records will be stored securely and kept confidential. All information will be strictly limited to use by the school as outlined in the Privacy and Confidentiality Policy. You may access your child’s records at any time if you are the authorised guardian who has enrolled the child. Please see the Head of School about accessing these records.

Delayed Entry and Exit from the Kindergarten Program Consideration of delayed entry to or delayed exit from our Kindergarten programs may be initiated by either the parent and/or the Kindergarten Educator. Enrolment decisions should be informed by a child’s developmental abilities, prior experiences and social emotional capabilities. Please refer to our Delayed Entry and Exit Procedure and Policies for further information.

CARING FOR YOUR CHILD

Medication In the event that a child is required to take prescriptive medication during his/her attendance at Kindergarten, instructions from the child’s Medical Practitioner or the attached pharmaceutical label must contain the following information: name of the child, name of the medication, dosage to be taken, frequency of dosage, prescribing doctor’s name, and date issued. If this information is not on the label we will not administer the medication. Please refer to our Medication Policies.

Prescribed Medication Parents are asked to enter the details of medication to be given on the ‘Medication Form’ located inside the sign-in folder. The dosage and time to be given must be entered on the form by the parent. Staff will not administer medication unless specific time/dosage is indicated by the parent. The medication must be given to a staff member on arrival. Staff will place the medication in a storage bag that is inaccessible to all children.

Non-prescribed Medication (including alternative therapies) Non-prescribed medication (i.e. over the counter medications and alternative therapies) will not be given to any child unless prior written permission and instructions from your child’s doctor have been received by the Educator.

Sun Care As part of our sun-safe policy and our requirements as a Sun Smart Centre, we require children and adults to wear hats outdoors. We request that parents apply sunscreen to their child’s skin before or when they arrive each day, which will be provided by the Centre. We ask that parents sign the Sunscreen log on the Sign In/Out Form stating that sunscreen has been applied. We will re-apply sunscreen during the day if children are to be in the sun for prolonged periods. Should your child

have sensitive skin and you would prefer your child to have their own sunscreen, please provide sunscreen that is clearly labelled with your child’s name. We also ask that when parents or family members assist us with outdoor activities that they too wear a sun smart hat whilst visiting at the Early Years Learning Centre.

Behaviour Management In order to guide children’s behaviour, the staff utilise a number of strategies such as directional language, guidance strategies and behaviour teaching processes as part of our everyday program to encourage children to choose appropriate behaviour. This enables the child to develop self-respect, self-responsibility and self-control. Underlying our guidance practices are the following assumptions: We respect and look after each other We respect and look after our environment We use our words to help solve problems To support children’s behaviour, we believe that open and honest communication between all parties is essential. Teachers will liaise with family members to work together to support your child’s behaviour and their needs.

Custody Parents/guardians who have custodial rights that do not allow the other parent/guardian to have contact with their child/ren must provide a current copy of the custodial papers to the School Office. Whilst every care will be taken to prevent a child being taken by an unauthorised person, there may be instances in which we cannot prevent this from happening. Our staff cannot expose themselves or the other children to an unacceptable risk of personal harm. If a child is taken, the police will be called immediately.

Safety An evacuation procedure and plans are situated on the parent information board within both Early Years Learning Centre rooms. We ask all staff, parents and children to familiarise themselves with the procedures. Fire, evacuation and lock down drills are practiced regularly. Should you be present during a drill, please participate. Regular evacuation procedures give the children an opportunity to become familiar with the routine and planned evacuation/lock down procedures. All fire fighting equipment is serviced every twelve months. Maintenance safety checks are carried out regularly. All chemicals used in the centre are ‘child friendly’ and non-toxic.

Fire Evacuation Procedure 1. On sound of alarm, Educator and the Assistant are responsible for the removal of their

group of children from the Centre to the oval. 2. The Educator takes the roll and marks it outside. 3. The Assistant checks bathroom and outdoor area. 5. The Assistant collects the key for the back gate and opens it.

Health and Hygiene We have a high standard of hygiene practices including: Hand washing procedures for staff, upon arrival, after wiping children’s noses, before

handling food, administering medication and after cleaning.

Page 28: EYLC Parent Information Booklet

Daily/weekly washing of equipment used by children. Each child uses separate sheets, beds and eating utensils. Children’s bathrooms are cleaned regularly throughout the day. Parents are asked to support our health and hygiene policy, which includes the above hygiene practices. Staff may refuse admittance to any child showing symptoms of an infection that may affect the health of the rest of the group. Children should be kept at home for at least twenty-four hours following vomiting, diarrhoea or fever/high temperature, to allow the child time to recover and lessen the possibility of passing it on to others. Please ensure all staff are notified of any allergies your child may have. All staff hold a current First Aid Certificate and Asthma and Anaphylaxis training. Your child’s physical safely is important to us. Children are not left unattended at any time.

Hand Washing Parents are encouraged to assist their children in washing their hands upon arrival and before leaving. Our staff encourage children to wash their hands regularly throughout the day and hand washing techniques are regularly taught. Hand sanitising gel is available in the EYLC Foyer.

Oral Hygiene The importance of regular teeth brushing will be discussed within our program as well as the role healthy foods play for our health. After each meal the children will be encouraged to drink water to aid dental hygiene whilst at the Early Years Learning Centre.

Illness and Injury The Early Years Learning Centre actively strives to avoid injuries occurring and to minimise the impact of injuries and illnesses by responding appropriately and as quickly as possible. The rights and responsibilities of parents with respect to injuries and illnesses of their children are acknowledged and will be taken into account in administering all procedures. Children with infectious diseases will be excluded from the EYLC. This is for the safety and well-being of the other children and staff as well as your child. Re-inclusion of your child will be considered after appropriate recommendations have been taken from your General Practitioner. The school will promptly telephone a parent/guardian if a child has been involved in a serious accident/head injury or becomes ill. Qualified staff will administer basic First Aid as deemed necessary and the school nurse will assist if parents have given prior permission. If contact cannot be made and it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately, an ambulance will be called and the child will be taken to hospital. Any costs incurred are the parent/guardian’s responsibility. Please ensure emergency contacts are kept updated.

Operation of the Health Centre If a child becomes ill and the need arises for him/her to go home during the school day, every endeavour is made by the Educators or Registered Nurse on duty to contact the parents. It is therefore of the utmost importance that parents notify the School if there are changes to phone numbers. If parents will be away from home on business or holidays we ask that parents give us a second phone number to ring in case of emergency.

Immunisation The Early Years Learning Centre requires a copy of your child’s immunisation status upon enrolment. Parents who have made the decision not to immunise their child, will have to sign a Statutory Declaration agreeing to the removal of their child from the Centre in the event of a contagious disease being present in the Centre. Please amend your child’s vaccination status by submitting new vaccination certificates after each immunisation. Parents will be advised of current clinics running throughout the year and request these details are kept up to date regularly.

Medical Forms and Medication We request that all parents who are new to the school contact the Health Centre if their child has known allergies/significant health issues, so as a suitable action/care plan can be devised for the appropriate care of the child/children. These forms are to be updated each year and the appropriate medication is to be in date, clearly labelled and stored in a belt bag in the Early Years Learning Centre. This applies to all Allergy, Anaphylaxis and Eczema Action Plans.

Allergies and Anaphylaxis Staff attend regular Asthma and Anaphylaxis training by a registered provider. There are a number of students who have Anaphylaxis (severe and sudden allergic reaction). Anaphylaxis occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen to which they are sensitive. The most common allergens are foods, medications and insect bites. To help minimise students’ risk of exposure to a potential allergen, we ask that parents/caregivers do not provide sweets, lollies, soft drinks and peanut products.

Religious and Spiritual At its essence, the school seeks to nurture students to be young people of good character. Therefore, the spiritual dimension of Prep and the development of ethical values form central elements in each child’s growth.

Through active participation in School Chapel services and Christian Education lessons, students gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of such values as honesty, acceptance and compassion and are encouraged to integrate these into their everyday lives. Complemented by our Pastoral Care Program and the example of our teachers and boarding staff, Chapel life forms a place from which springs the ethical position of the school.

Personal Relationships and Pastoral Care Foster appropriate relationships between teachers and students, with the teacher as a role

model, to encourage both teachers and students to initiate positive interactions. Encourage honesty within the school community. Develop mutual trust, respect and discipline. Ensure each student is individually known and valued.

Academic and Attitudinal Provide students, given their different abilities and backgrounds, with the opportunity to

undertake studies in a broad range of disciplines. Promote intellectual challenge, a broadening of horizons, a love of learning and a spirit of

inquiry. Enable all students to pursue their aspirations beyond the school as effective citizens.

Personal Well-Being and Co-Curricular Activities The School is committed to a whole person approach to education. Therefore, students are encouraged to participate in the extensive range of co-curricular activities offered at Prep. The Early Years Learning Centre is included, where appropriate, in Lower Primary weekly and annual events.

Respect for Children The best interests of the child are our paramount concern at The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre. Our service endeavours to provide care that respects the child’s dignity and privacy at all times and that considers children as unique, valued individuals. Children are to be considered and, as far as possible, involved in the ongoing development of the program, rules of behaviour and the physical and aesthetic environment.

Child Protection The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre regards as the utmost importance, its role in the protection of children in its care. This includes moral and legal duties to care for children associated with the Early Years Learning Centre programs whilst not in the care of their parents or primary carers. All staff have been made aware of the Child Protection Policy and the Reporting of Child Abuse through induction and training procedures. The Policies and Procedures are available for families to view, and are located in the foyer.

Child Care Benefit (CCB) Childcare Benefit is a payment made to families to assist with the costs of child care. Australian residents using child care provided by an approved child care service may receive the Childcare Benefit. CCB is based on an income assessment and can be applied for through Centrelink. All childcare details are confidential. It is the parents’ responsibility to obtain and forward to the Administration staff a current Childcare Benefit letter stating their entitlement. Parents must also ensure that they have contacted Centrelink to link their family to The Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre. Failure to do this will result in the requirement to pay full fees until a Child Assessment Notice has been received by the school.

Bookings Bookings and Cancellation Procedures It is essential that we maintain the correct staff /children ratios within our centre. Therefore we need to keep a record of the children who are enrolled in our Kindergarten, Morning and Afternoon Care and Vacation Care Programs and if the booking is to be cancelled. This provides information for our educators and safety for your children. Please refer to the procedure below.

Morning and Afternoon Care:

1. We ask that you ring School Reception by 3:30pm the day before to book or cancel your children into Morning Care for the following morning.

2. If your child is going to be attending Afternoon Care on any particular day, please ring School Reception by 1:00pm. This includes if your child will be attending Afternoon Care after their sports training. Please notify the class teacher as well. It is essential though that the booking is made through School Reception.

3. Preferably, if you know the days in advance at the beginning of the term, month or week please make that booking on the Monday or the week before if possible. In the case of an emergency or alteration of family plans your child is still able to attend Morning and Afternoon Care. Please contact School Reception to communicate this information as soon as possible.

Vacation Care:

Three weeks prior to the upcoming Vacation Care Program a registration form is available for all parents to make bookings. All bookings need to occur on the Friday before the coming week in order for the correct staff-child ratio to be maintained. Full time or Casual day bookings may be made.

All bookings and cancellations need to occur through School Reception before the scheduled program commences.

Giving Notice Parents are required to provide a term’s written notice to the Head of School if it is their intention to withdraw their child from Kindergarten, otherwise a full term’s fees will be charged in lieu of notice. (Child Care Benefit is not entitled if the child does not attend).

Absences Families receiving Childcare Benefit are allowed 42 days per financial year including public holidays, per child, for ‘absences’. Absence days can be taken for any reason and no documentation is required. Once the 42 absent days have been used, the parent is to pay the full cost of care on any further absences in the financial year, unless they are deemed ‘Additional Absence Days’. Additional Absence Days cannot be taken until all 42 absent days have been used.

Additional Absences CCB is also payable for additional absences taken for the following reasons: Illness (with a medical certificate). When an outbreak of an infectious disease when the child is not immunised. Any other absences due to sickness of the child, a parent or sibling, supported by

medical certificates. Temporary closure of school or pupil-free days. Periods of local emergency. Exceptional absences circumstances. Additional absences do not include public holidays. CCB will NOT be paid for public holidays if 42 absences have already been used. Absences taken for the above reasons are called ‘Additional Absence Days’. There is no limit on the number of Approved Absence Days a child’s family can claim provided they are taken for the specified reasons and are accompanied by the appropriate paperwork. Copies of paperwork will be retained by the Toowoomba Preparatory School Early Years Learning Centre. All parents are requested to notify the Kindergarten as soon as possible the reason for their child’s absence. If the absence is due to an infectious disease, notification must be given immediately after the diagnosis. A child will not be readmitted without a written clearance from the child’s doctor.
