EYFS READING
BY THE END OF EYFS
At Malmesbury we use the Jolly Phonics scheme of work. This is a fun and multi-sensory synthetic phonics method that gets children reading and writing from an early age. This means that we teach letter sounds as opposed to the alphabet. In reception we teach phase 2 and 3. Can you practise the sounds?

WHERE WE START WITH READING BOOKS…
Why do we use
wordless books?
Wordless books……..
• Can build confidence.
• Wordless picture books leave a lot to the imagination. But that doesn’t mean there’s no story line!
• Full of vivid illustrations, these books encourage children to use the detailed images to pick up on context clues and figure out what’s happening.
• Those same clues will be a factor in decoding text later, and recognizing their importance can help kids become stronger readers.
WHAT WHY HOW WHO
WHERE Can you think of some questions to ask children about this
story?
ELG 10 Writing: Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple
sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically
plausible.
Can you read an example?
